The expected ENTRY pay range for this position based on experience and equity within the Judicial Branch is $23.54 to $29.63.

This position is non-exempt under the FLSA.

About the Position

The Probation Dispatcher plays a critical role in safeguarding Adult and Juvenile probation staff in the field by managing multi-channel radio communications and computer-aided dispatch systems. This position is responsible for receiving, coordinating, and relaying vital information from law enforcement, the public, and other sources, while ensuring continuous radio contact with field units. The Adult Probation Communications Center does not handle 911 calls but focuses on the safety and coordination of probation department staff.

The Communications Center operates 24/7, year-round, and you must be available to work any assigned shift, as listed below, to be considered for this position.

  • Shifts include 1st (6:00am-2:00pm), 2nd (2:00pm-10:00pm), 3rd (10:00pm-6:00am)

  • Training schedules will generally be on 1st or 2nd shift, after which you will transition to your assigned shift. New employees are typically assigned 2nd or 3rd shift depending on department needs.

  • Communications Center employees work five, 8-hour days per week

  • Currently shift differentials are $0.50 for 2nd and $0.75 for 3rd

Position Qualifications

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED

Experience:

  • (1) year of public contact, customer service, multi-line telephone operation, dispatch, or two-way radio system experience

OR

Combined education and experience qualifications:

  • Other combinations of post-secondary education and/or work-related experience may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Computer applications to include Microsoft 365

  • Law enforcement terminology and a basic understanding of the Criminal Justice system

Skill in:

  • Communicating effectively and clearly to others in person, on the phone and over the radio 

  • Operating communications equipment quickly yet accurately 

  • Both verbal and written communication

Ability to:

  • Learn and apply knowledge of local geography

  • Type at least 35 wpm and maintain accuracy

  • Utilize the computer aided dispatch system to include proper dispatch formats, codes and terminology

  • Prioritize tasks while adapting to evolving and unexpected changes

  • Remain detail oriented and maintain composure during heavy workloads or stressful situations

  • Complete daily tasks with moderate supervision

  • Evaluate and process complex information while quickly and calmly handling emergency situations  

Essential Job Tasks

  • Enter and update data on clients, incident reports, and status changes across multiple databases.

  • Maintain awareness of field personnel and update their status in the computer aided dispatch system. 

  • Receive and transmit non-emergency and emergency transmissions to and from probation staff via radio, telephone, computer or other communication equipment.

  • Accurately evaluate incoming radio or phone calls for appropriate action and initiate proper response. 

  • Create and maintain accurate, up-to-date manual and/or electronic computer records of all communication and dispatch activities. 

  • Provide excellent customer service via telephone to probation staff, external stakeholders, the public, and law enforcement. 

  • Conduct inquiries of case management databases.

  • Adhere to legal, ethical, and departmental guidelines concerning the handling of confidential and sensitive documents.

  • Attend meetings and required trainings.

Working conditions: 

This role requires the employee to:

  • Navigate between 8 computer monitors to include CAD and Vesta Phones

  • Wear a headset  

  • Sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time

  • Type, handle objects, and reach with hands and arms

  • Occasionally may be required to lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to the midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.

The Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County participates in the State Retirement systems ASRS or PSPRS. As such, mandatory membership for all full-time employees includes payroll deducted contributions consistent with each retirement system's requirements. The current contribution rate for ASRS is 12.27% and the current contribution rate for PSPRS is 5.84% and up for the defined contribution plan and 8.82% for the defined benefit plan. Judicial Branch facilities are located throughout Maricopa County.  This position may be reassigned to other locations.  Assignments will be made based upon the needs of the department.
