Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer role within the Chief Development Experience Office (CDXO) to provide enterprise technical leadership for developer platforms and software delivery. The role will establish practical engineering standards, scale reusable automation, improve developer experience, and enable secure, reliable, AI-ready delivery across application and platform teams.

In this role, you will:

  • Advise senior technology leaders on DevOps strategy, developer platform direction, engineering priorities, delivery risks, investment tradeoffs, and measurable outcomes.
  • Define enterprise standards for source control, trunk-based development, code review, build, test, artifact management, release, deployment, observability, reliability, and operational readiness.
  • Architect and build reusable CI/CD components, pipeline templates, self-service workflows, and paved roads for cloud, container, and hybrid environments.
  • Embed security and compliance into delivery workflows through automated testing, policy enforcement, secrets protection, dependency and container scanning, artifact integrity, evidence generation, and traceable exceptions.
  • Modernize manual and fragmented delivery processes using pipeline-as-code, infrastructure-as-code, GitOps, progressive delivery, and automated recovery patterns.
  • Partner with application and platform teams to assess readiness, run pilots, remove systemic constraints, and scale proven solutions across the portfolio.
  • Improve developer experience by reducing repetitive work, shortening onboarding and feedback cycles, and replacing ticket-driven processes with secure self-service.
  • Use engineering metrics and developer feedback to identify bottlenecks, guide investment, and improve adoption, delivery performance, and reliability.
  • Advance InnerSource, reusable engineering assets, documentation, communities of practice, and coaching to improve consistency and team self-sufficiency.
  • Evaluate and introduce AI-assisted delivery and agent enabled engineering workflow capabilities with appropriate controls, human oversight, auditability, and measurable benefits.
  • Mentor engineers, influence architecture and product decisions, and lead root-cause analysis and systemic remediation for complex issues.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using AI‑assisted development and analysis tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot and approved code‑centric agents)
  • Leverage AI to accelerate system design, coding, testing, analysis, and troubleshooting
  • Apply strong technical judgment when validating and integrating AI‑assisted outputs into solutions
  • Understand and account for model limitations, security risks, and operational considerations
  • Apply AI responsibly in development and production environments
  • Ensure AI usage aligns with security, compliance, privacy, and ethical standards

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 7+ years designing, building, or leading DevOps or platform engineering capabilities, demonstrated through work experience, training, military experience, education, or a combination of these.
  • 5+ years defining technical strategy, target-state architecture, standards, or transformation roadmaps in large, complex technology environments.
  • 5+ years architecting or engineering reusable CI/CD, policy-as-code, GitOps, developer self-service, or internal developer platform capabilities.
  • Hands-on experience with GitHub and GitHub Actions, artifact repositories, CI/CD orchestration, infrastructure-as-code, configuration automation, and GitOps tooling.
  • 5+ years of software development, scripting, or automation using Java, Python, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, or a comparable language.
  • 5+ years working with cloud, container, or hybrid platforms, including Cloud Foundry, OpenShift, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and cross-functional teams, resolve complex enterprise technology challenges, and drive adoption without direct authority.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience leading enterprise engineering transformation and advising senior leaders on platform strategy, architecture, risk, investment tradeoffs, and outcomes.
  • Experience managing an internal developer platform as a product, including user research, roadmaps, reliability, adoption, documentation, and success measures.
  • Deep knowledge of DevSecOps and secure software supply chains, including automated testing, secrets protection, SAST, SCA, SBOMs, artifact provenance, policy enforcement, and auditable evidence.
  • Experience with trunk-based development, feature flags, progressive delivery, automated rollback, observability, service-level objectives, resiliency engineering, and incident learning.
  • Experience using engineering metrics and developer feedback to improve flow, reliability, adoption, platform usability, and business outcomes.
  • Strong executive communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions, dependencies, risks, and tradeoffs to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Experience establishing InnerSource contribution models, shared ownership, engineering communities, and mentorship across organizational boundaries.
