The Painter/Sandblaster is responsible for performing surface preparation, abrasive blasting, and industrial coating applications on a variety of structures, equipment, piping systems, and facilities. This position ensures surfaces are properly prepared and coated to meet project specifications, quality standards, and corrosion protection requirements. The Painter/Sandblaster works safely and efficiently in industrial, commercial, utility, and construction environments.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform abrasive blasting, sandblasting, and surface preparation activities using approved methods and equipment.
- Clean, strip, and prepare metal, concrete, and other surfaces for coating application.
- Apply industrial coatings, primers, paints, sealants, and specialty finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
- Prepare and mix paints and coatings according to manufacturer specifications.
- Verify surface cleanliness and preparation standards prior to coating application.
- Operate airless spray equipment, conventional spray systems, blast pots, compressors, and related equipment.
- Measure and monitor coating thickness to ensure compliance with project specifications.
- Protect surrounding areas through proper masking, covering, and containment procedures.
- Perform touch-up, maintenance, and repair coating work as required.
- Inspect completed work and identify defects requiring correction.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
- Follow all safety requirements related to respiratory protection, hazardous materials, confined spaces, and elevated work.
- Complete daily work reports and documentation as required.
- Participate in safety meetings, trainings, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- 1+ years of industrial painting, blasting, construction, or related experience preferred.
- Familiarity with painting, coating, and surface preparation techniques.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and painting equipment.
- Basic understanding of industrial safety procedures.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Valid driver's license preferred.
- Ability to pass pre-employment and client-required screenings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in industrial, oil & gas, utility, mining, power generation, manufacturing, or construction environments.
- OSHA 10 Certification.
- Experience operating abrasive blasting equipment.
- Knowledge of SSPC/NACE surface preparation standards.
- Experience with airless spray systems and industrial coating applications.
- Forklift, aerial lift, or scaffold experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of surface preparation and coating application methods.
- Ability to work safely around industrial equipment and hazardous materials.
- Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship.
- Ability to read and understand coating specifications and safety data sheets (SDS).
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in physically demanding conditions for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators, protective suits, gloves, hearing protection, and fall protection equipment.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel as required.
Work Environment
- Industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, power plants, refineries, utility projects, construction sites, and fabrication shops.
- Exposure to dust, paint fumes, chemicals, blasting media, noise, heights, and varying weather conditions.
- Work may be performed indoors, outdoors, on scaffolding, or in confined spaces.
