Optical Metrology Technician

Overview

US Conec is seeking an Optical Metrology Technician to support the production and development of advanced fiber optic connectivity products. This role serves as a key technical resource responsible for optical measurement, inspection, testing, and process verification activities that help ensure product quality, manufacturing efficiency, and compliance with performance requirements. The position partners closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to support continuous improvement and new product development initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Perform optical inspections, measurements, testing, and process verification activities to support production operations.
  • Evaluate dimensional, surface, and optical performance characteristics of fiber optic connectors, ferrules, assemblies, and related components.
  • Operate, program, troubleshoot, and maintain optical metrology and inspection equipment used in manufacturing processes.
  • Conduct first article inspections (FAI), capability studies, gauge verification activities, and routine process qualification assessments.
  • Investigate and resolve issues involving optical measurement systems, test equipment, inspection fixtures, and verification processes.
  • Establish, maintain, and execute calibration schedules and measurement system validation procedures.
  • Assist engineering teams with the development, validation, and implementation of new measurement methods, inspection fixtures, and manufacturing processes.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to production personnel on measurement techniques, inspection standards, and testing procedures.
  • Analyze measurement and inspection data, communicate findings, and support data-driven decision making.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on product quality, process capability, measurement repeatability, and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including inspection procedures, calibration records, validation studies, work instructions, and test methods.
  • Support compliance with quality standards, process controls, and manufacturing requirements.

Must Haves

  • Associate degree in Applied Science, Optical Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years of experience as an Optical Technician, Metrology Technician, Precision Measurement Technician, or a similar technical role.
  • Hands-on experience supporting optical component manufacturing, fiber optic connector production, or precision manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of optical inspection, measurement, and testing techniques.
  • Experience operating microscopes, interferometers, vision systems, or other optical metrology equipment.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), specifications, and inspection requirements.
  • Experience with equipment calibration, measurement system verification, and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency with measurement software, data collection systems, and analysis tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams in a manufacturing environment.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with fiber optic connectors, ferrules, polishing processes, or optical assemblies.
  • Exposure to new product development and manufacturing process validation activities.
  • Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC), process capability studies, or quality improvement methodologies.
  • Familiarity with automated optical inspection systems and advanced metrology technologies.
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement initiatives in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Technical certifications related to metrology, quality, optics, or manufacturing technology.
