Job Description Summary

The Mental Skills Performance Coach is responsible for design and implementation of innovative supportive services and development programs for student athletes in the area of sport and performance psychology to maximize whole person success including athletic performance and general well-being.

Job Description

The Mental Skills Peformance Coach provides mental performance training, assessment, and intervention services to Miami University student-athletes and teams, collaborating with coaches and staff to strengthen performance, resilience, and department culture, while ensuring compliance with NCAA, MAC, and university regulations.

Duties:

  • Collaborates and consults with Miami University athletic department staff members and/or sport personnel to improve student-athletes mental performance. May provide educational training to coaches and staff.
  • Conducts individual performance enhancement training, individual feedback assessment and training, comprehensive sport focused assessments for both the student-athlete and team, team interventions and specialty workshops upon request. Makes referrals as appropriate to clinical and counseling psychologists.
  • Provides strategies to assist student-athletes that will enhance their performance, cope with the pressure of competition, recovery from injuries, motivation to continue training through adversity faced, and find personal fulfilment within sport and competition.
  • Participates in the collection and analysis of tactical and statistical data and assists in designing
  • plans and strategies. Identifies and offers solutions to complex problems that may impact the overall performance of the student-athletes and ultimately, the team.
  • Coordinates education programming and organizes workshops that build and reinforce department culture and core values.
  • Maintains continual and thorough familiarity with all applicable NCAA, MAC, university and department rules and regulations. Enhances current knowledge with advanced educational opportunities on issues and techniques used in the field.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in sport psychology or sub-disciplines of intervention/performance enhancement, health/exercise psychology, cognitive psychology, and/or social psychology.
  • Degree must be from a school recognized by professional accrediting organization, e.g., Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), American Board of Sport Psychology, Association for Applied Sports Psychology (AASP), or American Psychological Association (APA).
