Purpose of the job
To effectively manage and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the grocery floor, ensuring excellent customer service, efficient stock management, high merchandising standards, accurate pricing, and achievement of sales and profitability targets. The Grocery Floor Manager is responsible for leading and developing employees while ensuring compliance with Pick n Pay policies, procedures, food safety requirements, and health and safety standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate.
  • Relevant retail, grocery, business management, or related qualification will be advantageous.
  • Minimum 2–3 years' retail experience, preferably within a grocery or supermarket environment.
  • Previous supervisory or team-leadership experience is required.
  • Experience in stock control, merchandising, customer service, and retail operations.
  • Computer literacy, including basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and retail point-of-sale systems.
  • Good understanding of retail stock management and loss prevention.
  • Willingness to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Valid driver's licence may be advantageous depending on store requirements.

Key Responsibilities

 

1. Grocery Department Operations

  • Manage the daily operations of the grocery floor to ensure smooth and efficient service.

  • Ensure shelves are fully stocked, well presented, correctly priced, and merchandised according to company standards.

  • Monitor product availability and ensure fast replenishment of stock from the storeroom.

  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, cleanliness, and organisation within the department.

  • Ensure promotional displays and special offers are implemented correctly and on time.

  • Monitor stock levels and identify fast-moving, slow-moving, and discontinued products.

2. Customer Service

  • Provide excellent customer service and ensure customers receive a positive shopping experience.

  • Assist customers with product enquiries, availability, pricing, and complaints.

  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and escalate complex issues when required.

  • Ensure employees maintain professional and friendly customer-service standards.

3. Stock Management

  • Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering and replenishment to minimise out-of-stocks.

  • Conduct and oversee stock counts and investigate stock variances.

  • Minimise stock losses, damages, wastage, and shrinkage.

  • Ensure correct receiving, storage, handling, and rotation of grocery products.

  • Monitor expiry dates and ensure products are removed or managed according to company procedures.

4. Sales and Financial Performance

  • Support the achievement of departmental sales and profitability targets.

  • Monitor daily sales performance and identify opportunities to increase sales.

  • Control operational expenses within the department.

  • Analyse sales trends and take corrective action where required.

  • Implement promotional and merchandising activities to maximise sales.

5. Team Leadership and Staff Management

  • Supervise, motivate, coach, and develop grocery floor employees.

  • Allocate daily duties and ensure adequate staff coverage.

  • Monitor employee attendance, punctuality, productivity, and performance.

  • Conduct staff briefings and communicate operational priorities clearly.

  • Train employees on customer service, merchandising, stock control, and company procedures.

  • Address performance and disciplinary matters in line with company policies and procedures.

6. Compliance, Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Maintain a safe working and shopping environment.
  • Ensure employees follow occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Report hazards, incidents, losses, and operational issues promptly.
  • Support internal audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Ensure all relevant legal and food-handling requirements are followed.

7. Merchandising and Store Standards

  • Maintain agreed planograms and merchandising standards.
  • Ensure promotional material, tickets, labels, and prices are accurate and visible.
  • Monitor competitor activity and report relevant market information to management.
  • Ensure the grocery floor consistently meets store presentation standards.
