Overview

CANDU Energy Inc./AtkinsRéalis Nuclear Inc. is currently looking for a Junior Mechanical CAD Designer to join our engineering team in Mississauga, Ontario. Reporting to the Reactor Maintenance Technical manager, the Junior Mechanical CAD Designer would support the various Field Services projects in the Candu Field Services department.

The employee will be required to obtain security clearance for Candu Energy Inc. facilities and our customer sites. This activity typically requires extended time for someone who is not a citizen of Canada, so Canadian citizenship is an advantage. 

The employee may be assigned to short-term field service assignments on Candu Field Services projects, typically during customers’ outages and at their sites. During these assignments, the employee may be requested to perform work in a radiological work environment such as set-up and operation activities of certain tooling. In this event, the employee will be required to be a Nuclear Energy Worker qualified and trained to CANDU Energy’s RP program as “Group 3” worker and with our customer’s onboarding process, as well as receiving practical training related to the project. Physical fitness and hands-on experience with tools and equipment will be an advantage.

The employee will be expected to perform tasks and activities commensurate with their level of experience and familiarity with the technology, while supervised by more senior design staff. 

Your role

Position requires working on fast paced technically complex projects in the Nuclear industries. Typical duties and essential functions will include but not be limited to the preparation, design, modification, coordination, and/or review of the following:

• Prepare electronic documents in in AutoCAD, Microstation, Solid Edge, Solid Works and other relevant CAD tools.
• Create precise 3D models for design and visualization, using Model-Based Definition (MBD) to define all product specifications.
• Follow client driven file management system for document storage.
• Prepare engineering deliverables for both nuclear and conventional systems in accordance with AtkinsRéalis Nuclear Inc./Candu Energy Quality Assurance Programs and project requirements.
• Apply relevant Codes & Standards and regulatory requirements and coordinate with design team to ensure the compliances.
• Interface with Engineering teams, throughout the lifecycle of the design project (i.e., from preliminary and conceptual engineering to detailed design, implementation and close-out) to provide practical and effective solutions as per requirements.
• Revise existing drawings/3D models (relative to the discipline) from fairly detailed verbal or written instructions, and/or marked up drawings.
• Continue to learn the fundamentals of CAD techniques through job experience, coaching and training in order to reach a higher competency level.
• Ensure CAD file configuration management and storage are as per procedure.
• Prepare drawings/3D models (relative to the discipline) of minimal complexity. As requested, implement any necessary design changes, calculations and materials selection - with assistance from more senior staff.
• Perform other related duties as required.

About you

• College diploma or equivalent work experience with a minimum of 2 years in mechanical design and drafting.
• Individuals are expected to have some basic academic knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD applications. Working knowledge in AutoCAD or MicroStation and SolidWorks.
• ASME Code knowledge considered an asset.
• Familiar with machine design, GD&T (including ASME Y14.5 standards, symbol interpretation, and tolerance analysis), and welding principles (MIG, TIG, arc welding, and welding symbol representation).
• Basic understanding of mechanical design principles. Understanding manufacturing processes (machining, welding, and additive manufacturing) and their influence on design decisions.
• Ability to take marked up engineering drawings and incorporates changes into AutoCAD files.
• Must be “Team” oriented with a demonstrated ability to work well with other and promote a positive work environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with staff in a team environment as well as independently.
