TEGNA is searching for an accomplished, strategic leader to serve as Group General Manager, providing leadership and oversight to multiple TEGNA markets.
The Group General Manager (Group GM) is accountable for driving business performance, audience growth and operational excellence across multiple markets, while leading and supporting General Managers to deliver strong results for our audiences and advertising customers. The Group GM acts as a coach, operating partner and accountability leader for their assigned General Managers, while preserving appropriate local-market autonomy and decision-making.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading complex media operations, developing high-performing leaders, achieving financial goals and driving innovation.
The position reports to the President & CEO.
Responsibilities:
Provides strategic and operational leadership across multiple TEGNA markets, with accountability for performance across the group.
Leads, coaches and develops General Managers, setting clear expectations and driving accountability for financial, audience and strategic objectives.
Assesses General Manager performance and leadership effectiveness and provides direct, actionable feedback.
Partners with General Managers to develop short, intermediate and long-range revenue and audience strategies that grow market share and engagement across platforms. Translates company strategy into actionable priorities for local markets.
Oversees financial performance across the group, including annual budgets, forecasting, revenue growth, expense management and profitability.
Evaluates market performance and works with General Managers to identify opportunities to accelerate growth, improve operations and strengthen execution.
Identifies opportunities to share resources, expertise and best practices across markets while maintaining the local focus essential to each operation.
Partners with TEGNA leaders across content, sales, finance, human resources, technology and other functions to execute company priorities and support opportunities for collaboration and scale
Identifies opportunities to grow multi-platform content, audience, revenue and distribution capabilities.
Builds a strong leadership pipeline and succession plans across the group, including identifying and developing future General Managers.
Supports General Managers in building strong relationships with advertisers, community leaders and other key stakeholders.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, business or related field or equivalent combination of education and executive experience
10+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in local television, media or a comparable multi-site operating environment.
Proven success leading complex businesses or multiple markets, business units or locations with significant P&L responsibility.
Prior experience as a President & General Manager or in a comparable senior operating leadership role.
Demonstrated ability to lead, coach and develop senior leaders across multiple locations.
Proven track record of achieving financial, audience and strategic objectives.
Strong critical thinking skills and data-driven decision-making capability.
Deep understanding of the evolving media landscape and strategies to grow audiences and revenue across linear, digital and streaming platforms.
Ability to drive scale and efficiency while recognizing the unique needs of individual markets.
Ability to prioritize effectively and maintain visibility and engagement across multiple markets.
Continuous improvement mentality with a willingness to take risks and identify new ways to grow audience and business.
Effective communicator and inclusive leader who listens well, takes input from all levels and creates a shared vision.
Strong track record of developing senior leaders.
