Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Associate Director, Grants and Agreements, the Grants and Agreements Officer is responsible for the management and execution of large competitions and high-volume funding opportunities offered through federal, provincial, and international research sponsored programs, including high-value awards at the University. The Grants and Agreements Officer acts as a subject matter expert on these funding opportunities and advises the McGill research community on how to maximize the research funding potential from a range of sponsors (agencies, foundations, etc.). The Grants and Agreements Officer is also responsible for the drafting, review, and negotiation of agreements and contracts as they relate to research projects within assigned areas/sectors of responsibility.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and implement grants and agreements management processes of high-volume external research programs (e.g. provincial, federal, international) to ensure delivery of funding programs to researchers across campus.
  • Acts as a resource person and subject matter expert to the McGill research community on sponsors’ policies, procedures, and guidelines for funding proposals and applications. Provide outstanding customer service by assisting and advising researchers during both the pre-award and post-award project phases.
  • Provide information and guidance to researchers on existing or potential large and/or collaborative funding opportunities within assigned areas or sectors of responsibility.
  • Organize and participate in outreach sessions to promote funding opportunities and provide expert advice on grant application processes. .
  • Act as the primary contact for liaison among all stakeholders in relation to funding opportunities. Establish and plan a framework for the successful completion of application processes by meeting milestones and engaging all stakeholder groups.
  • Design, review, and negotiate agreements and documents related to proposals and research collaborations. Identify and mitigate risk issues, articulate alternatives, and recommend solutions to McGill researchers.
  • Develop working relationships with university stakeholders, granting agencies, and foundations. Build partnerships and negotiate with other universities, and non-profit organizations as related to collaborative applications within the assigned areas or sectors of responsibility.
  • Assess and obtain approval for internal resources to support collaborative projects.
  • Facilitate the post-award management process with external sponsors and internally at McGill. Work with the Awards Management team regarding post-award issues. As required, communicate with partners to ensure the proper management of awarded and committed funds.
  • As necessary, assume responsibility for planning, developing, editing, and disseminating project reports, presentations, and other project information and communications.
  • Provide activity and other special reports as well as analysis within the assigned areas or sectors of responsibility to the supervising Associate Director and/or the Senior Grants and Agreements Officer on a regular basis.
  • Assume other responsibilities or tasks related to the support of research activities by academic staff, as assigned by the Associate Director.

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:

  • Five years of related experience (preferably at a large, research-intensive university).
  • Experience in reviewing and negotiating contracts and agreements.
  •  Expert knowledge in provincial, federal, and/or international major funding opportunities and collaborative projects.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Proven ability to work and achieve objectives within a complex policy and procedural framework.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal, French and English).
  • McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
