Director | Library & Patient Education

• Reports to: Vice President, Talent & Organizational Effectiveness

• Location: Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. Role is fully on site.

• Starting Salary: $93,808+ more for experience

Position summary:

The Director of Library & Patient Education leads Library Services and enterprise knowledge-based initiatives. This role designs, implements, and manages standardized patient education resources and partners with healthcare professionals and patient education providers to ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards. The Director also develops and advances innovative knowledge management initiatives that support the organization’s strategic goals.

What you’ll do:

You’ll lead the department’s strategy, operations, and team while partnering across the organization to improve access to information, strengthen patient education, and support high-quality care.

Strategic leadership

• Anticipate market, regulatory, technology, and care delivery trends that affect the department and the broader organization.

• Develop and execute operational plans that align with Gundersen Health System’s mission and strategic priorities.

• Partner with leaders to ensure resources, processes, and priorities support department goals.

• Establish clear performance expectations and monitor progress toward continuous improvement.

Fiscal management

• Manage the department to meet fiscal targets while delivering cost-effective, high-quality services.

• Participate in forecasting, planning, and financial analysis.

• Evaluate opportunities for cost-effective change and support implementation of approved improvements.

• Communicate financial decisions clearly to managers, staff, and clinicians.

People leadership

• Lead, develop, and support a high-performing team in a collaborative environment.

• Set clear expectations and hold team members accountable for results.

• Partner with Human Resources and other leaders to recruit, retain, and develop talent.

• Promote teamwork, open communication, respect, and professional recognition across a diverse workforce.

Service and quality

• Develop and implement service, quality, and safety standards that support patient experience and internal customer needs.

• Use data to identify trends in satisfaction, quality, safety, and cost, then guide improvement efforts.

• Ensure staff consistently deliver excellent service to patients and internal and external customers.

• Protect confidentiality of patient, staff, and management information.

Organizational leadership

• Represent the organization’s mission and values in a positive, informed, and credible way.

• Work with system leaders to remove barriers that affect cost, quality, and service.

• Support a strong learning environment for students, interns, and residents while maintaining patient safety.

• Identify personal development opportunities and pursue ongoing growth.

What you'll need:

• Required education: Master's degree in American Library Association accredited Masters of Library Science (MLS)

• Required work experience: 5-7 years of experience in a professional discipline. Ability to lead at the influence level.

• Desired work experience: 5-7 years of experience as a health sciences librarian.
