This is an unpaid fellowship through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program. The fellow selected for this role will not receive compensation or benefits from GDIT and will not be an employee, agent or contractor of GDIT but rather will remain an employee of the DoW and will receive compensation and benefits through the DoW.

Job Description:

Through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program, GDIT offers transitioning service members the opportunity to gain hands‑on training and professional experience as a Desktop Systems Technician Fellow, supporting mission‑critical IT operations for the USCENTCOM Information Technology Services (CITS) Program at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL.

As a Desktop Systems Technician Fellow, you will learn how face‑to‑face and remote Tier 1 and Tier 2 support is delivered for hardware, software, and application issues across NIPRNet, SIPRNet, and Coalition networks. Working alongside experienced Desktop Systems Administrators, the participant will gain practical experience in troubleshooting, configuration management, lifecycle hardware accountability, and multi‑domain IT operations supporting the USCENTCOM J6.

This Fellowship is designed to build foundational readiness for future employment as a full‑time Desktop Systems Technician.

HOW A DESKTOP SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN FELLOW WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

  • Train on managing the functionality and efficiency of computers running one or more operating systems in an enterprise environment.

  • Participate in hands‑on O&M support for personal computers, thin/zero clients, laptops, PEDs, and peripheral devices under experienced technician supervision.

  • Support end‑user IT system and software maintenance associated with USCENTCOM Continuity of Operations (COOP) activities.

  • Learn to coordinate and track Automated Data Processing Equipment (ADPE) accountability, including new equipment issuance, lifecycle replacement, and upgrade processes.

  • Train on tracking the disposition of equipment throughout its lifecycle in alignment with CERP and LCR requirements.

  • Observe processing of end‑of‑life, defective, and damaged equipment through Defense Reutilization Management Office (DRMO) channels.

  • Assist in developing, testing, and documenting desktop load‑set configurations, including user‑issue logging, software conflict identification, device compatibility evaluation, and configuration refinement.

  • Gain exposure to providing technical support to Coalition Partner Networks (CPN) and SCO environments, learning how multinational connectivity and device support are executed.

  • Learn how systems planning, workflow improvement, and IT system integration are performed to enhance operational effectiveness.

  • Participate in establishing and maintaining standards for information systems procedures across the enterprise.

  • Support integration testing, configuration documentation, troubleshooting activities, and deployment readiness tasks as training progresses.

  • Observe collaboration with software developers, system administrators, and technical stakeholders to implement integration interfaces and APIs.

  • Learn to conduct validation of integrated systems and assist in identifying and documenting discrepancies in functionality or performance.

  • Gain exposure to emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to enterprise IT operations and modernization.

  • Participate in meetings, technical exchanges, and workshops to mirror the engagement of full‑time system technicians.

  • Gain awareness of strategic tech‑insertion efforts and lifecycle replacement planning across the broader IT enterprise.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:

Education:

  • High school diploma required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a focus in computer science, engineering, or a related field of study preferred.

Experience:

  • 1+ years of related IT experience.

  • Experience supporting hardware/software maintenance, system troubleshooting, or multi‑domain environments highly beneficial.

Technical & Professional Skills:

  • Experience with hardware troubleshooting, system maintenance, and device configuration.

  • Familiarity with Windows, Linux, and virtualized environments.

  • Understanding of IT system connectivity, workflow improvement, and establishing procedural standards.

  • Ability to document configurations, integration processes, and troubleshooting steps.

  • Experience supporting expanded or modified systems to improve workflow or serve new operational needs.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical disciplines.

  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast‑paced operational environment.

Certifications:

  • Applicable DoW 8140 or DoW 8570 Certification

  • Microsoft certifications preferred.

  • ITIL 4 Foundation Certification preferred.

Role Requirements:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.

  • Military experience; Special Operations background preferred.

  • On‑site attendance at customer location (MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL).

  • Fellowship duration aligned with DoW SkillBridge guidelines.

DoW SkillBridge Eligibility:

  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty

  • Can participate within the last 6 months of separation or retirement

  • Will receive an honorable discharge

  • Has taken any service TAP/TGPS

  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months

Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoW SkillBridge Program prior to start of the fellowship.
