Job Description:

Under managerial supervision, participates, supports and prepares data analysis and reporting for business decision making, strategic planning, and process improvement using various methods and techniques. 

A crime analyst is needed to work in the offices of the Mesa Police Department (MPD). The staff member will be employed by ASU but will work under the supervision of MPD's Crime Analysis Unit and Brooks Louton, Clinical Assistant Professor at ASU. The project is intended to enhance crime analysis capacity through increased staffing immediately and expose staff to more advanced crime analysis concepts and methods and build staff skills that will enable them to formulate and address problems of interest to their agency/organization. Please note, this position will be located at the Mesa Police Department.

Position Salary Range:

  • $45,000 - $49,032 annually

Essential Duties:

  • Participates, supports, and prepares data analysis and reporting for police decision-making.

  • Performs tactical, strategic, and administrative crime analysis.

  • Performs research analysis to understand current performance, analyze trends, and assists in making recommendations for future project performances.

  • Assists in the development of measurements and metrics for data analysis to be used for business decision-making, planning, and process improvement.

  • Securely collects, cleanses, standardize, transforms and stores data from various sources ensuring data integrity.

  • Uses predictive modeling, statistics, trend analysis and other data analysis techniques to collect, explore, and identify the right data to be analyzed from internal and external sources.

  • Responsible for regularly auditing data input; audits may involve studying number, organization practices and customer feedback.

  • Prepares or coordinates preparation of reports; analyzes and interprets statistics, financial data, and management planning data for predicting resource needs and developing long range plans.

  • Maintains awareness of current trends in data collection and organization, data preservation, and numeric data analysis by participation in appropriate professional activities and contributing to research in the field: to implement procedures and technologies that assure the long-term sustainability and accessibility of datasets.

  • Utilizes various computer programs and software to perform data computation, statistical analysis and other data manipulation activities.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.

  •  Experience in quantitative data analysis and interpretation.

  • Experience in collecting, organizing, synthesizing and analyzing data; summarizing findings; developing conclusions and recommendations.

  • Experience in planning, analyzing, and coordinating activities and establishing priorities.

  • Experience in managing multiple priorities.

  • Experience in accurately and reliably interpret data for determining appropriate action.

  • Experience in stimulating changes in individual, institutional, and corporate behaviors to create a more.

  • Experience in leading by example in communicating, participating and encouraging support of the institution's sustainability program.

  • Currently a Criminal Justice Masters Student.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.

  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.

Toward the goal of social embeddedness, Arizona State University established the Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety in July 2005 to respond to the growing need of Arizona's communities to improve the public's safety and well-being. The Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety is a research unit within the College of Public Programs at Arizona State University.


The Center's mission is to generate, share, and apply quality research and knowledge to create "best practice" standards.


The Center specifically evaluates policies and programs, analyzes and evaluates patterns and causes of violence, develops strategies and programs, develops a clearinghouse of research reports and "best practice" models, educates, trains, and provides technical assistance, and facilitates the development of and construction of databases. The Center also supports public health and violence-prevention research through data analysis, dashboard development, research reporting, and dissemination products designed to inform policy, practice, and community safety strategies.
