Job Description Summary

Provide support for the overall Athletic Department of Miami University by providing quality cheer/dance routines that enhance the enthusiasm for RedHawk teams on campus and in the greater Oxford community. The advisor will provide quality performances primarily at all home/away football and home basketball games as well as special campus and community events.

Serves as the advisor for the varsity cheerleading squad. This position specifically supports the mission of the University and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics by assisting in institutional compliance with NCAA and Conference rules and regulations.

Job Description

Duties

  • Primary coaching responsibilities will include the successful identification, evaluation and recruitment of academically qualified student-athletes and supervision of volunteer assistant coaches.

  • Guide practices, attends all cheerleading events, prepares team for competition, develops and enforces discipline.

  • Supervise team at all Home Men’s & Women’s Basketball and Home and Away Football Contests.

  • Teach/instruct performance as well as stunting and tumbling.

  • Assist team in developing cheers and choreography.

  • Assist tryouts by teaching two sidelines/16 count dance routine and contributes to the selection of squad by being on the judging panel. Monitoring and maintaining the budget.

  • Ordering equipment and uniforms.

  • Secure practice locations.

  • Plan, organize and travel with teams for three day summer camp trip in August (when applicable).

  • Plan, organize and travel with varsity squad members on six to seven weekends for away football contests. Coordinate all activities for varsity squad for any bowl games.

  • Supervise squad at all Miami Men's and Women's Basketball games. Travel with the squad to the men's and women's MAC Basketball Tournament.

  • Organize and plan all team activities should the team qualify for the national cheerleading competition each spring.

  • Organize and supervise all cheerleading tryouts each spring and fall for varsity and junior squads.

  • Work with marketing and event management departments to ensure high quality performance and representation during all athletic contests and special events.

  • Secure choreographer for squad. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma required.

  • Experience with Division I cheer squads.

  • Candidates must possess a certification from the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors.

  • Requires experience in cheer coaching (minimum 2 years) that includes recruiting, marketing, choreography, stunting, and tumbling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • CPR & First Aid Certified

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of stunt progressions and safety protocols

  • Effective communication with student-athletes, staff, and administration

  • Sound judgment under pressure; strong organizational skills

  • Position requires frequent evening and weekend hours. Will also require travel.
