Description

The Biosensor team is seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual to support the development of advanced sensing technologies for medical and diagnostic applications. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, characterisation, development, and testing of metabolite and biomarker sensors, with a particular focus on electrochemical sensing technologies. This role will involve close collaboration with cross-functional teams to improve sensor performance, support product development activities, and contribute to the transfer of technology into industrial environments where appropriate.

The ideal candidate will have previous hands-on experience developing metabolite sensors, such as lactate and glucose sensors, together with a strong understanding of electrochemical sensor principles. Experience in biomarker sensor development is also highly desirable, particularly in the context of diagnostic or monitoring applications. Industrial experience in sensor development would be a strong advantage, especially within regulated or product-focused environments. Experience working with blood samples, dissolved gas sensing in aqueous or biological media, and familiarity with ISO 13485 medical device standards would also be beneficial. The candidate should be a strong team player with excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

As part of the Design Team in the Biosensors group, the successful Development Engineer will:

  • Focus on the design and development of metabolite sensor technologies, with an emphasis on electrochemical sensing approaches.
  • Support the planning, execution, and delivery of sensor development activities across multiple stages of the development cycle.
  • Perform laboratory analysis, characterisation, and evaluation of newly developed and commercially available sensor systems.
  • Contribute to the optimisation of sensor performance, including sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and reproducibility.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with teams in Quality, Test, Reliability, Manufacturing, and other relevant disciplines.
  • Support development activities involving biological samples, including blood, where applicable.
  • Contribute to documentation, design controls, and development processes in line with regulated medical device environments.
  • Support technology transfer activities to industrial or high-volume manufacturing settings where required.
  • Maintain clear and detailed development records and communicate progress to the Biosensors Team and broader stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the generation of new ideas and intellectual property across sensing technologies, materials, testing approaches, and manufacturing processes.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:

  • BSc, MSc or PhD in Electrochemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Previous hands-on experience developing metabolite sensors, such as lactate and/or glucose sensors.
  • Strong knowledge of electrochemical sensors and their principles, design, and performance characteristics.
  • Experience in sensor characterisation, laboratory testing, and data analysis.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
  • High levels of motivation, initiative, and creativity, with a positive and proactive attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage technical challenges and deliver high-quality results in a development environment.

Desired:

  • Industrial experience developing metabolite sensors or related biosensor technologies.
  • Experience in biomarker sensor development, including the design and evaluation of sensors for diagnostic or monitoring applications.
  • Experience in dissolved gas sensor development, particularly for measuring dissolved gases in aqueous and/or biological samples
  • Experience working with blood or blood-based samples in a laboratory or development setting.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 and medical device development processes.
  • Experience working in diagnostics, biomedical devices, biotechnology, or a related regulated industry.
  • Knowledge of reliability testing, verification, validation, or technology transfer to manufacturing.
  • Experience with materials, membranes, enzymes, polymers, or other components relevant to biosensor development.
  • Familiarity with product development in regulated environments would be advantageous.
