Position Overview:
Join our Applied Machine Learning team and help solve real operational challenges across one of Canada's largest supply chains. Although our team is called Applied Machine Learning, our day-to-day work focuses primarily on software development, data engineering, and process automation. We build Python applications, SQL solutions, dashboards, and internal tools that save hundreds of hours of manual work and improve supply chain operations. Machine learning is occasionally part of our toolkit, but it is not the primary focus of this role.
You may work on projects such as:
- Building Python applications that automate manual business processes
- Writing SQL against enterprise data warehouses (BigQuery and Oracle)
- Developing internal dashboards and reporting tools
- Integrating systems using APIs
- Designing workflows that eliminate repetitive operational tasks
- Working directly with business partners to understand problems and deliver practical solutions
- Building and maintaining scalable data pipelines that support reporting, analytics, and operational applications.
- Developing solutions within Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Windows virtual machine environments.
You'll own real projects from concept to production—not just small pieces of larger initiatives. From gathering business requirements through design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support, you'll experience the full software development lifecycle while receiving mentorship from the team.
Responsibilities:
- Develop Python applications that automate supply chain processes.
- Write efficient SQL queries against enterprise-scale datasets in BigQuery and Oracle.
- Design, build, test, and deploy internal tools used by Supply Chain teams across Canada.
- Partner directly with business users to understand operational challenges and translate them into technical solutions.
- Investigate production issues, troubleshoot problems, and continuously improve existing automation.
- Create clear technical documentation to ensure solutions are maintainable and easy to support.
- Continuously identify opportunities to eliminate manual work through automation.
Technologies you'll use:
- Python
- SQL (Google BigQuery & Oracle)
- Google Cloud Platform
- Jupyter Notebooks
- Power BI
- Git
- Jira
- Confluence
- Windows and Linux development environments
What you’ll need:
- Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience writing Python applications and SQL queries. Exposure to cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (preferred), AWS, or Azure is an asset.
- Strong curiosity and a willingness to independently learn new technologies.
- Resourceful and comfortable researching unfamiliar problems independently while knowing when to seek guidance.
- Enjoys solving ambiguous business problems with practical software solutions.
- Able to work independently while communicating progress and asking thoughtful questions when needed.
- Strong attention to detail and a desire to build reliable, maintainable software.
Please note Loblaw's Return to Office policy is 4 days in the office.
