What You’ll Do
As a critical member of the Mobile Product Engineering team, you will:
- Build and evolve key native features of the WeightWatchers Android app that support members in their health journeys: food tracking, activity logging, weight trends, progress milestones, and more.
- Deliver seamless and intuitive experiences using modern Android development practices and the latest UI frameworks.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Data, and Behavioral Science teams to deliver features that support daily habit formation, long-term motivation, and improved health outcomes.
- Own the implementation of upcoming flagship initiatives, ensuring high performance and a premium "look and feel."
- Shape the architectural decisions and technical standards for our Android application, promoting scalability and maintainability.
- Operate with high autonomy and influence: proactively question assumptions, bring new ideas, and champion product quality, performance, and member-centric design.
Who You Are
- Native Android Expert: Deep experience in Android development (Kotlin), with a solid grasp of Jetpack Compose, MVVM/Clean Architecture, and modular app structure.
- Product-Minded Engineer: A passion for mobile product engineering—especially around improving member experience, usability, and long-term engagement.
- Systems Thinker: An independent and critical thinker who brings a strong sense of ownership and an understanding of how code impacts the end-user.

Qualifications

What you will do
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will be a key driver in building and scaling the systems that power the WeightWatchers member experience. You will own the technical design and implementation of critical backend services - ranging from member identity and food databases to personalization and tracking tools. Your goal is to ensure our platform is performant, reliable, and capable of supporting millions of members as we develop new clinical and behavioral health pathways.
In this role, you will tackle complex technical challenges, lead the development of durable backend systems, and mentor other engineers to maintain a high bar for technical excellence.
1) Develop and Scale the Member Experience Platform
Feature Ownership: Lead the backend design and implementation of services that connect our mobile and web clients to scalable APIs and data stores.
Performance Engineering: Identify and resolve latency and availability bottlenecks in critical member flows like food search, logging, and onboarding.
Standardization: Implement standardized patterns for service contracts, event-driven architecture, and data ownership to ensure consistent delivery across the platform.
2) Modernize Data and Tracking Foundations
Food Database Excellence: Build and maintain high-performance services to improve search relevance and data quality for our global food database.
State Management: Help define how member data is cached, synced, and audited across services to minimize inconsistencies and improve system observability.
Robust Interfaces: Establish clean interfaces between operational systems and ML pipelines to ensure personalization is powered by reliable data.
3) Reliability and Operational Excellence
SLO-Driven Development: Define and monitor SLIs/SLOs for your services, ensuring they meet member expectations for performance and uptime.
Resiliency Patterns: Implement backend resiliency strategies such as circuit breaking, retries, and graceful degradation for major member workflows.
Security & Compliance: Partner with Security teams to embed automated controls into backend services, particularly for sensitive health-related data.
Technical Design: Create detailed technical designs and lead code reviews for complex backend features, ensuring high standards of maintainability.
Execution: Drive the delivery of multi-sprint projects, balancing rapid iteration with technical debt management and long-term stability.
Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of incident learning and operational readiness.
Collaboration: Partner closely with Infrastructure engineering, Product, Data Science, and Design to translate business requirements into efficient, scalable backend systems.
Problem Solving: Identify and resolve structural bottlenecks in existing services, such as data inconsistencies or brittle integrations.

Experienced Backend Builder: You have a deep understanding of building large-scale distributed systems, APIs, and event-driven architectures.

As a critical member of the Mobile Product Engineering team, you will:
- Build and evolve key native features of the WeightWatchers iOS app that support members in their health journeys: food tracking, activity logging, weight trends, and our new AI-driven health insights.
- Deliver premium UI/UX using modern Apple frameworks to ensure the app feels fast, fluid, and intuitive.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Data, and Behavioral Science teams to deliver features that support daily habit formation and medical weight-loss journeys (including our GLP-1 Med+ initiatives).
- Own the implementation of upcoming flagship initiatives, including Lock Screen Widgets, Live Activities, and health data integrations.
- Shape the architectural decisions and technical standards for our iOS application, ensuring a robust, modular, and testable codebase.
- Operate with high autonomy and influence: proactively question assumptions, bring new ideas, and champion product quality and performance.
Who You Are
- Native iOS Expert: Deep experience in iOS development with Swift, with a solid grasp of SwiftUI, Combine (or Swift Concurrency), and MVVM/Clean Architecture.
- Product-Minded Engineer: A passion for mobile product engineering—especially around improving member experience, usability, and long-term engagement.
- Apple Ecosystem Enthusiast: Someone who keeps up with the latest WWDC updates and understands how to leverage the latest iOS capabilities to delight users.
