About the Role
The Camera Foundation team is on a mission to develop and enhance the software infrastructure supporting our cloud camera ecosystem. Operating across stacks, including backend, frontend, and embedded systems, we're committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions to meet the evolving needs of our customers.
The team own and build large-scale distributed systems with among the largest QPS in Verkada. As a backend engineer in the team, you have the opportunity to work with top-tier engineers tackling the most challenging problems.
What You'll Do
- Lead the development of large-scale, high-performance backend systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and maintain the software infrastructure for our cloud camera products.
- Optimize and enhance the performance of existing software components.
- Mentor junior software engineers.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related fields.
- 4+ years of professional experience as a software engineer.
- Familiar with at least one of C++, Python, or Golang.
- Strong background in scalable backend design, with the ability to make sound design decisions.
- Familiar with common cloud-based technologies and services.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Must be willing and able to work onsite five days per week

About the Team
Alerts are an important part of the Verkada ecosystem and our customers rely on alert notifications to stay on top of live events such as persons of interest entering buildings, if a door was forced open after hours or simply knowing when to let the delivery person in. The Alerts and Operations team is responsible for building and maintaining the end-to-end systems for Events, Alerts and Notifications, processing upwards of 500 million events weekly from over a million devices worldwide.
Our systems process real-time events from Verkada's global device fleet, delivering intelligent, actionable alerts through multiple channels including email, SMS, push notifications, and webhooks.
In 2025, we launched Operations, a suite of features designed for customers monitoring critical infrastructure with dedicated security teams, starting with enhanced collaboration tools and expanding integration capabilities.
We're actively exploring how AI can help customers use our products more efficiently and respond more effectively to events, while continuing to improve the core reliability and intelligence of our alerting systems.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain scalable backend systems that process hundreds of millions of events, alerts and notifications weekly from security devices deployed around the world.
- Contribute to building backend infrastructure integrated with AI capabilities
- Own features end-to-end, from design through implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring in production.
- Develop and maintain Verkada’s public API interface that our customers use for various integrations.
- Collaborate with product managers, frontend engineers, and teams across the organization to deliver high-quality products.
What You Bring
- Degree in Computer Science or similar field.
- 3+ years of professional experience as a Back End Engineer, ideally at a rapidly growing start up or innovative company.
- Strong programming skills in Go, Python, Java, or C++. Willingness to learn Go if not already proficient.
- Experience with relational databases (Postgres, MySQL) or non-relational databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB).
- Demonstrated ability to ship features and take ownership of backend systems.
- Experience with message queues (Kafka, SQS) or search technologies (OpenSearch, Elasticsearch) is a plus.
- Experience working in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, Docker) is a plus.
- Must be willing and able to work onsite five days per week.

As a Software Engineer on the Video Streaming team, your work will directly shape how millions of people rely on video every day to stay safe. You’ll own and optimize streaming experience on the Android app, while delivering industry-leading reliability and security.
As an Android Engineer (Video Streaming), you will play a critical role in building, optimizing, and scaling high-quality video playback experiences on Android devices. This includes achieving sub-second latency for live video, improving playback load times, optimizing memory and CPU/GPU utilization.
What You'll Do
- Enhance the streaming experience on our Android app by delivering low-latency live video and ultra-fast load times. You’ll do this across a wide range of devices and network conditions.
- Collaborate with backend and streaming infrastructure teams to integrate APIs and deliver end-to-end video solutions.
- Implement and optimize video streaming protocols (HLS, DASH, RTSP, WebRTC, etc.) for low-latency, high-quality playback using adaptive bitrate streaming algorithms.
- Work with hardware-accelerated decoders (MediaCodec, ExoPlayer) to deliver smooth and efficient performance across various media formats (images, audio and video).
- Stay current with the latest in Android media APIs, streaming protocols, and device capabilities.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product and design to ensure a playback experience that’s consistent with other platforms and other video applications.
What You Bring
- BS/MS in Computer Science or a related field.
- 4+ years of professional experience in Android development (Kotlin/Java).
- Deep understanding of ExoPlayer, MediaCodec and Android Media APIs.
- Familiarity with video streaming protocols (HLS, DASH, RTSP, WebRTC) and audio, video and image codecs like H.264, HEVC, HEIF and AAC.
- Strong grasp of performance optimization on mobile devices (memory, CPU, GPU, battery) and networking protocols like TCP, UDP and QUIC.
- Bonus: hands-on experience with optimizing latency, startup time (TTFF) and video quality
- Must be willing and able to work onsite five days per week

About the Role
We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead Verkada's Search team, the group responsible for the AI-powered search and computer vision capabilities that make our camera fleet best in class in investigation and alerting. From face and person search to license plate recognition, reverse image search, and our next generation of LLM- and VLM-powered agentic experiences, the Search team owns the backend systems that let our customers find what they need across billions of frames in seconds.
As the leader of this team you will not just be managing engineers; you will be setting the technical direction for how Verkada defines search with embedding-based retrieval all to an agentic, multi-modal experience powered by modern LLMs and VLMs. You will own a portfolio of production services (API, inference pipelines, vector databases, etc.), drive active migrations, and hire, mentor, and scale a team of backend, frontend, and ML engineers to execute against an ambitious product roadmap while raising the bar on reliability, latency, and cost.
What You'll Do
Leadership & Team Building
- Build the Team: Recruit, hire, and mentor a high-performing group of backend and ML engineers covering search infrastructure, computer vision, and applied AI.
- Strategic Oversight: Own the end-to-end roadmap for Search and ML engineering backend from product-facing features like POI, LPR, and AI Search to the platform services that power them.
- Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner closely with Product, Design, CV/ML research, Camera Firmware, and Infrastructure teams to align on priorities, dependencies, and deployment plans.
AI Search & Applied ML (Hands-On)
- Agentic & Generative AI: Drive the rollout of AI-Powered Search, LLM migrations, VLM experimentation, and agentic AI into production-grade features.
- Embeddings & Retrieval: Oversee the evolution of our vector search stack to improve recall, latency, and cost at fleet scale.
- Model Evaluation: Lead detection evaluation, model consistency, and ongoing quality improvements for various CV and ML pipelines.
Search Infrastructure & Platform
- Service Ownership: Accountable for a portfolio of production services including submission endpoints, inference pipelines, APIs and database layer.
- Migrations & Deprecations: Execute in-flight migrations into new advanced pipelines and deprecations of old pipelines without disrupting customer-facing features.
- Scalability & Performance: Drive large-org optimizations, inference engine stability, gRPC load balancing, and connection-hardening work to keep the pipeline healthy as the fleet grows.
Reliability & Quality
- On-Call & Incident Response: Own the team on-call rotation, post-mortem quality, and the new programs required to scale the team.
- Test Coverage: Expand integration test coverage and search pipeline change testing to catch regressions before they reach production.
- Telemetry & Dashboards: Define and track the metrics that matter (e.g. API latency, search quality, inference stability, field reliability, etc.) via dashboards and service SLOs.
What You Bring
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years managing backend or ML engineering teams.
- Track record leading 5+ engineers running production services at meaningful scale.
- 4+ years of hands-on experience in at least two of: information retrieval, vector / embeddings-based search, computer vision, or large-scale recommendation systems.
- 2+ years productionizing modern LLMs, VLMs, or agentic systems (evals, guardrails, latency/cost tuning).
- Deep proficiency in Python plus Go/Java/C++; fluent in distributed systems (gRPC, Kafka) and a major cloud provider (AWS preferred). Hands-on with at least one production vector database or search engine (OpenSearch, Turbopuffer, FAISS, Milvus, pgvector, etc.).
- Strong operational instincts: on-call ownership, post-mortem rigor, and a habit of defining metrics and building evals to drive quality on high-availability services.
Nice to Haves
- Experience integrating foundation models via open-source GPU inference stacks.
- Familiarity with face recognition, person re-identification, LPR, or similar fine-grained CV pipelines.
- Background in physical security, video surveillance, or IoT/connected-device domains.
- CI/CD experience for ML/search services.

As an Android Engineer (Video Streaming), you will play a critical role in building, optimizing, and scaling high-quality video playback experiences on Android devices. What You'll Do

As a Senior Test Engineer, you will be responsible for validating the functional reliability and performance of our connected camera fleet across the entire hardware-to-cloud ecosystem.
As a part of the Camera Quality & Test Engineering Team, you will execute a hybrid validation strategy that combines rigorous system-level exploratory testing with the development of automated test scripts. You will spend your time interacting directly with physical camera hardware in the lab, reproducing complex field edge-cases, capturing system logs, and writing code to automate regression suites within our Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) infrastructure.
What You'll Do
System-Level & Exploratory Testing
- Execute structured system validation test plans for release candidates to ensure core firmware functionality, network resilience, and seamless cloud connectivity.
- Perform augmented and exploratory testing on new camera features, focusing on hardware-software integration (e.g., offline storage retention, streaming latency, image quality adjustments under varying lighting).
- Run repeated stress and longevity tests to identify memory leaks, thermal bottlenecks, and overall system degradation over time.
Automated Test Development
- Write, maintain, and execute automated test scripts (primarily in Python) to run against physical hardware in our test lab.
- Automate critical regression test cases to increase coverage and reduce manual testing cycles for weekly/monthly firmware OTA releases.
- Help maintain the physical test infrastructure, ensuring network switches, relay boards, and devices under test (DUTs) are properly configured.
Issue Reproduction & Hardware Debugging
- Triage escalated field bugs from customer support. Physically recreate environmental or network edge cases (e.g., PoE power drops, high packet loss) in the lab to reproduce the issue.
- Extract and analyze low-level device logs (via SSH, serial console, or cloud telemetry) to provide firmware developers with clear, actionable root-cause data.
- Track and verify bug fixes through the issue management system, ensuring regressions are caught before deployment.
Performance & Telemetry Monitoring
- Monitor device telemetry during release candidate testing to track CPU usage, memory consumption, and boot times.
- Compare system performance metrics against baseline data to catch degradations before they reach our enterprise customers.
What You Bring
- Experience: 2–4+ years of System Test, Validation, or Automation experience focused specifically on embedded systems, IoT devices, or consumer hardware products.
- Coding Proficiency: Solid scripting skills in Python. You should be able to write scripts to interact with internal APIs, parse serial log files, and control lab equipment.
- Embedded/Linux Skills: Comfortable navigating Embedded Linux environments via CLI. Familiar with basic shell scripting and standard Linux debugging tools.

We're looking for a strong systems software engineer to lead our camera fleet management team. This role sits at the intersection of systems engineering, site reliability, and data-driven operations. You'll own and drive the effort to safely release camera software at scale to upwards of a million devices. We build the intelligence layer that sits on top of Verkada's cameras. Our work spans motion and trajectory search, person re-identification, live activity timelines, license plate recognition, and dashboards for occupancy and queue analytics. Alerts are an important part of the Verkada ecosystem and our customers rely on alert notifications to stay on top of live events such as persons of interest entering buildings, if a door was forced open after hours or simply knowing when to let the delivery person in. The Alerts and Operations team is responsible for building and maintaining the end-to-end systems for Events, Alerts and Notifications, processing upwards of 500 million events weekly from over a million devices worldwide.
Our systems process real-time events from Verkada's global device fleet, delivering intelligent, actionable alerts through multiple channels including email, SMS, push notifications, and webhooks.
In 2025, we launched Operations, a suite of features designed for customers monitoring critical infrastructure with dedicated security teams, starting with enhanced collaboration tools and expanding integration capabilities.

About the Role
You will lead a software engineering team that builds the entirety of a particular, high-impact product line within Cameras team. The team works in concert with a product manager and a hardware manager to define and conceptualize the current and future product offerings, including hardware and software architecture selection.
From a technical perspective, the embedded software stack runs on an x86-based platform, necessitating work on: UEFI, bootloader, drivers, custom Linux OS distribution via yocto project, containerization, solid-state and hard disk storage, filesystem and block device mapping. The device interacts with a scalable cloud backend consisting of golang and python services in a typical microservice architecture stack. A Verkada proprietary suite of streaming technologies are implemented to provide high quality live and recorded video. Frontends include both web and mobile. Security technologies including encryption, signing, secure/trusted boot are also key to our implementation.
This product also implements high performance AI inference and computer vision (CV) features, which require optimization and productionization work in collaboration with the computer vision team that trains all our models.

We're looking for a backend software engineer with strong data analysis skills to join our camera fleet management team. You'll build the data infrastructure and analytical tools that power our safe release operations across a million+ camera devices. This role combines traditional backend engineering with data pipeline development, log analysis, and metrics-driven insights.
Camera firmware releases include critical updates like new AI models, and understanding their impact requires sophisticated data analysis at scale. You'll develop the pipelines, dashboards, and analytical tools that help us detect anomalies, measure release health, and ensure every deployment is successful. Your work will directly support data-driven decision making for releases that impact our customers and our reputation.
Every release decision we make affects hundreds of thousands of cameras in the field. About the Role
The Cameras team is the cornerstone of Verkada's product ecosystem. We are looking for a Director of Firmware Engineering to lead the embedded software organization behind our flagship camera line. In this role, you will oversee multiple specialized firmware groups, driving the development of highly reliable, performant, and secure firmware deployed to hundreds of thousands of devices worldwide.
You will manage and mentor a team of engineering managers and senior individual contributors, partnering closely with Hardware, Cloud, Product, and QA teams to define the roadmap and deliver cutting-edge edge-computing and imaging capabilities.
What You’ll Do
- Partner on New Product Development (NPI): Work side-by-side with the Hardware and Electrical Engineering teams from the conceptual phase through mass production. You will co-design system architectures, evaluate new silicon (SoCs, sensors), provide early firmware requirements for board designs, and ensure seamless hardware-software integration for our next generation of cameras.
- Oversee Core Camera Firmware: the group responsible for the foundation of our camera OS. This includes driving new hardware bring-up, porting vendor SDKs, developing low-level drivers, and managing robust Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware update mechanisms.
- Oversee Camera Imaging Systems: the team dedicated to maximizing image quality. They guide efforts in Image Signal Processor (ISP) tuning, sensor integration, and optimizing the end-to-end imaging and video encoding pipeline.
- Drive Firmware Delivery & Quality: Champion the group responsible for deploying new firmware releases at a massive scale. You will oversee the development of release tooling, refine deployment processes, establish CI/CD best practices, and closely monitor fleet health metrics to ensure exceptional reliability.
- Scale and Mentor the Team: Recruit, hire, and mentor exceptional firmware engineers and engineering managers. Foster a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and cross-functional collaboration.
What You Bring
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of hands-on embedded software or firmware engineering experience, with a proven track record of shipping high-volume consumer or enterprise hardware products.
- 4+ years of engineering management experience, including experience managing other managers and leading organizations of 15+ engineers.

As a Technical Program Manager (TPM) for the Camera Software team, you will take point on developing & coordinating strategic cross-team initiatives, develop the software side of new hardware programs, and own the delivery of high-performance firmware that powers our next-generation imaging systems. This is not a project manager role that is tracking down commitments and monitoring tickets. This person will develop critical processes, drive the definition of complex projects, and help coordinate multiple teams to deliver on critical programs.
You will sit at the intersection of Hardware, Firmware, Streaming, and Computer Vision, ensuring that as we evolve the products that we do so in a coordinated manner. Ensuring alignment between the different engineering disciplines is key. Key examples of focus include the firmware delivery process, firmware planning for new hardware (NPI).
What You'll Do
- Critical Program Definition and Execution: The cameras team is 70+ engineers (and growing) that’s focused on core embedded camera, computer vision / ML, streaming, alerts & workflows, and more. There are regularly critical programs that require contribution across internal and external teams - this person will help take on the hardest - driving a clear program plan and helping coordinate execution.
- Firmware Delivery: Define and manage the end-to-end firmware release process. You will lead the team through the firmware qual and release process, ensuring all exit criteria are met for stability, performance, and image quality. This is fundamental to ensuring we release firmware to our customers in a reliable manner with rigor and attention to quality.
- Process Engineering: Establish and refine the "rules of the road" for the firmware team and cameras team more broadly. This includes defining bug-triage workflows, release branch strategies, and automated testing requirements for specific hardware targets.
- Hardware-Software Synchronization: You will align hardware milestones (EVT, DVT, PVT) with firmware releases to ensure silicon bring-up and module integration are seamless. You will identify critical path dependencies—such as ISP tuning, driver development, and sensor calibration—and proactively mitigate risks before they impact the build schedule.
- Stakeholder Communication: Provide clear, data-driven visibility into program health. You’ll translate technical firmware blockers into actionable business risks for executive leadership.
What You Bring
- Experience: 5+ years of experience as a TPM, Engineering Manager, or Program Manager in a technical environment.
- Domain Knowledge: Proven track record of delivering embedded systems or firmware, ideally within the imaging, robotics, or consumer electronics space.
- Lifecycle Mastery: Deep understanding of hardware development lifecycles (PLC) and how software milestones nest within physical build cycles.
- Technical Literacy: Ability to discuss API design, memory constraints, and power management with engineers without getting lost.
- Must be willing and able to work onsite five days per week.
Nice-to-Haves:
- Experience with product observability tools and data analysis
- Hands-on experience with Jira/Confluence or similar tools to build automated tracking dashboards.
- Background in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.

About the Role
As a Staff Embedded Software Engineer, you will spearhead the development of brand-new camera categories while driving the continued growth and reliability of our ever-expanding global fleet. This role is a high-impact technical leadership position requiring seamless collaboration across the entire stack—including Hardware, Product, Backend, and Frontend teams—to bring first-generation systems to life. Reporting directly to the Camera Firmware Manager, you will work full-time at our HQ in San Mateo to oversee the technical lifecycle of our newest hardware and ensure the operational excellence of a multi-million device, perpetually online IoT footprint.
What You'll Do
- Unlocking New Markets: Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of entirely new camera categories for untapped market segments. Collaborate directly with Hardware and Product teams during the initial co-design phase, to influence HW selection and feature scoping.
- Architectural Leadership: Own the firmware roadmap and drive the large-scale architectural changes required to support novel features across the entire stack—from low-level MCUs to Linux-based edge services.
- System-Wide Technical Depth: Engineer high-performance features across a diverse software landscape, spanning bare-metal MCU firmware, secure bootloaders, Linux kernel optimizations, and concurrent userspace services.
- Complex Problem Solving: Tackle the most "gnarly" system-level challenges, from non-deterministic race conditions and memory corruption to elusive hardware-software timing issues that only emerge at the scale of a million-device fleet.
- Navigate Multi-Dimensional Trade-offs: Systematically balance conflicting priorities—including hardware security hardening, peak performance, power efficiency, and deep fleet observability
- Cross-Functional Optimization: Partner with CV, Streaming, and Storage teams to architect vertically integrated features that push the boundaries of edge computing and real-time computer vision.
- Operational Excellence at Scale: Champion a reliability-first culture for a global fleet of 1.5 million perpetually online devices, designing the deployment and monitoring strategies that ensure 24/7 uptime.
What You Bring
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- 10+ years of professional experience in systems software development for performance and resource-constrained environments.
- 5+ years of experience building software for Linux-based platforms.
- Demonstrated experience leading large-scale, cross-functional initiatives from concept to production. You have a history of aligning diverse engineering verticals to deliver complex systems on aggressive timelines.
- Proven experience leading initial board bring-up and hardware-software co-design for first-generation embedded devices.
- Hands-on experience with low-level protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, USB) and the ability to debug complex hardware-software interactions.
- Experience designing, implementing and debugging concurrent/multithreaded firmware services
- Strong understanding of modern operating systems, computer architecture, and trade-offs between compute, memory, and storage.
- Proficient in at least one systems programming language: C++ or Golang.
- Familiarity with Bash scripting and Python for tooling and automation.
- Bonus Qualification: Direct experience with Linux Kernel development, including writing or debugging drivers, managing device trees, or optimizing kernel-space performance.
- Bonus Qualification: Technical depth in MCU firmware and the boot stack, with a focus on RTOS, bare-metal development, or secure boot implementation.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering and product teams.
