The Team:
Upstart’s Product Experience team brings together product design, research, and content strategy to shape the future of lending. We focus on high-craft execution, deep customer insight, and measurable business impact, partnering across product areas to build experiences that are clear, trustworthy, and human. Our Unsecured Lending team focuses on building borrower-facing experiences across personal loans and revolving credit products. This team owns core moments in the borrower journey, including rate selection, origination, and repayment, with a focus on clarity and trust.
As a Product Designer at Upstart, you will support feature-level design work across these experiences, partnering closely with product managers and engineers. You’ll work within established design direction to deliver high-quality, production-ready designs that directly impact millions of borrower interactions.
How you’ll make an impact
- Design end-to-end user experiences across borrower-facing flows
- Translate product requirements into wireframes, interactive prototypes,, and high-fidelity visual designs
- Collaborate with product managers and engineers to align on scope, constraints, and implementation details
- Deliver production-ready designs and ensure design intent is preserved through development handoff
- Incorporate user feedback, data insights, and stakeholder input to iterate on designs
- Partner with adjacent teams (e.g., Growth) to ensure seamless experiences across the borrower journey
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years of product design experience, owning small-to-medium projects end-to-end
- End-to-end design: problem/goal definition, rapid user testing and user research, wireframing and strong iterative instincts, interaction and visual design including strong typography skills, running an articulate and repeatable user-centered design process
- Proficiency in Figma, strong fluency in GenAI tools
- Gives, receives, and incorporates feedback at each stage
- Gets stakeholder buy-in; delivers smooth design handoffs where resolution matches design intent
- Understands business context at a high level and how design impacts it
- Fluency in working within design systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with complex multi-step flows with branching outcomes and plentiful edge cases (applications, forms, comparison tools)
- Strong familiarity with contributing to or advancing design systems
- Experience in Fintech, lending, insurance, or other heavily regulated consumer products
- Experience working in a triad model (PM/Eng/Design)

Time zone requirements The team operates on the East/West coast time zones.
Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.

The Team:
Upstart’s AI Experience Platform (AIXP) team is building the next generation of AI-native product experiences that transform how borrowers interact with their finances. Within this pillar, the team partners closely with Payments and Borrower Experience to design intuitive, trustworthy interactions across both traditional interfaces and emerging conversational surfaces.
As a Senior Product Designer on this team, you will lead the design of AI-powered payment experiences that directly impact borrower financial health. You will bridge platform capabilities and real user needs, shaping how borrowers make, manage, and recover payments through both UI and conversational interfaces.
How you’ll make an impact
- Design end-to-end payment experiences across web interfaces and conversational AI agents, ensuring consistency and clarity across interaction modes
- Translate complex payment workflows (e.g., ACH, debit, failed payments) into intuitive user experiences that handle edge cases and error states effectively
- Define and evolve interaction patterns for conversational interfaces, including dialogue flows, fallback behaviors, and multi-step task completion
- Partner closely with product managers and engineers to shape product direction, scope solutions, and deliver high-impact user outcomes
- Use data and experimentation (e.g., A/B testing, user behavior insights) to iterate on designs and improve key metrics such as payment success and engagement
- Contribute to and extend design systems by establishing reusable patterns for AI-native and conversational experiences
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- 5+ years of product design experience delivering end-to-end user experiences for digital products
- Experience designing conversational, chat-based, or AI-assisted user interfaces
- Experience designing complex workflows with branching logic, edge cases, and error handling
- Proficiency with Figma and prototyping tools for interactive or conversational flows
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing LLM-powered interfaces such as chatbots, AI agents, or copilots
- Experience designing transactional or financial workflows such as payments, checkout, or lending
- Familiarity with fintech or regulated consumer products
- Ability to define new interaction patterns in emerging product spaces
- Experience working with design systems and contributing reusable components or frameworks

The Team:
Upstart's Product Experience team brings together product design, research, and content strategy to shape the future of lending. We focus on high-craft execution, deep customer insight, and measurable business impact, partnering across product areas to build experiences that are clear, trustworthy, and human. Content Design and User Research are cross-cutting craft specialties that serve every pillar — essential to journey quality and informed decision-making across the team.
As the Principal UX Researcher reporting to the VP of Product Design, you will establish Upstart's dedicated UX research practice. Today, product designers conduct their own research as needed and the Consumer Insights team provides market and customer intelligence — but there's no shared UX research methodology or consistent way to connect customer behavior insights to product design decisions. You'll bridge that gap: defining how UX research gets done, equipping designers and PMs to conduct foundational research well, and leading the strategic studies that influence decisions across Upstart's lending products.
How you’ll make an impact
- Establish and scale a UX research practice, including methodologies, standards, and tools used across product teams
- Lead high-impact, cross-functional research initiatives that inform product strategy and roadmap decisions
- Enable designers and product managers to conduct effective day-to-day research through toolkits, templates,and best practices
- Build and maintain research infrastructure — participant recruiting pipelines, research repositories, and insight-sharing systems that make findings accessible and actionable across teams
- Partner with Product, Engineering, and Consumer Insights leaders to ensure research has an informed and influential voice in product decisions — bridging horizontal insights across a multi-product lending portfolio
- Define and promote best practices for conducting research in a regulated environment with sensitive borrower data
- Balance speed and rigor by prioritizing research that drives timely, actionable insights
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Sociology, Statistics, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- 8+ years of experience conducting UX research using qualitative and quantitative methods
- Experience building or scaling a UX research practice, including establishing processes, tools, or frameworks
- Demonstrated experience leading research that influenced product strategy or roadmap decisions
- Experience working in complex, multi-product environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of financial services, fintech, or consumer lending products
- Experience working in regulated environments with sensitive user data
- Ability to design and implement scalable research systems that enable non-researchers to conduct foundational research
- Experience with AI-assisted research tools or workflows
- Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and integrate research into product decision-making
