THE CLOUD PLATFORM JOURNEY

Trade Republic's cloud infrastructure spans multiple AWS accounts across development, staging, and production environments — supporting regulated financial services across 18 European markets. Today, much of this is managed through Terraform. We're making a deliberate strategic shift: moving from declarative infrastructure-as-code toward programmable control planes — Go-based systems that use tools like Pulumi and Crossplane to continuously govern, reconcile, and automate our cloud foundations.

This isn't about running Terraform plans faster. It's about building software that manages a bank's cloud infrastructure as a product — encoding compliance, security, and cost best practices into systems that enforce the right thing by default. The patterns are already proven: our Kubernetes fleet management uses Crossplane with Sveltos, FluxCD, and ClusterAPI, and our Temporal-backed control planes already manage database and messaging operations using Pulumi. Now we need to bring this same approach to AWS account management, IAM governance, organisational structure, and networking — IAM policies, account structures, network topologies, and organisational guardrails, all governed through code that reasons about intent, detects drift, and converges autonomously.

We've gone from manually provisioned infrastructure to a platform where compute autoscales across clusters, fleet management orchestrates add-on lifecycles across environments, and infrastructure provisioning runs as self-healing workflows with cross-account automation — no human in the loop. The next frontier is bringing this same level of automation to the cloud foundations layer itself.

We also own Trade Republic's partner connectivity — the network fabric that connects us to exchanges, payment providers, and banking partners through site-to-site VPNs, AWS Direct Connect, VPC peering, transit gateways, and more. These connections are mission-critical and must be production-ready ahead of every company release.

• Build cloud control planes: Design and implement Go-based systems that programmatically manage AWS infrastructure — accounts, IAM, networking, and organisational policies — replacing manual Terraform workflows with self-healing, intent-driven automation.
• Encode governance as software: Turn compliance, security, and cost requirements into programmable guardrails that are enforced continuously, not checked after the fact — meeting the same bar of reliability and self-service that our engineers already expect from the rest of the platform.
• Own partner connectivity: Build and operate the network infrastructure that connects Trade Republic to exchanges, payment providers, and banking partners — ensuring these connections are resilient, secure, and ready ahead of every release.

• 5+ years of experience in cloud platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, or a related SRE/systems discipline.
• We are hiring from senior to staff level, so whether you have a strong foundation and are ready for more ownership or you have been leading cloud platform strategy for large-scale systems for many years, we would love to hear from you.
• Strong programming skills in Go, with experience building infrastructure automation as software rather than scripts.

• Run PostgreSQL at scale: Own the reliability and uptime of our PostgreSQL clusters — design for high availability, engineer for resilience, and ensure near-zero downtime across maintenance, upgrades, and failure scenarios.
• Build the database platform: Automate the full operational lifecycle — provisioning, configuration, upgrades, scaling, and backup — turning manual database operations into self-service workflows that run without human intervention.

THE KUBERNETES PLATFORM JOURNEY

Trade Republic runs a growing fleet of Kubernetes clusters across multiple AWS accounts and environments, underpinning every service that millions of customers depend on. Managing that fleet at the pace the business demands — with the reliability and compliance bar a regulated financial institution requires — made it clear that treating clusters as manually managed infrastructure was no longer an option.

We changed that. We built a hub-and-spoke fleet management platform — ClusterAPI for cluster lifecycle, Crossplane for the infrastructure control plane, Sveltos for addon orchestration, all driven by GitOps from a single source of truth. A new cluster is now a single resource definition. Addons are versioned packages, deployed automatically to every cluster in the fleet. Operational complexity no longer grows with the number of clusters.

The foundation is in place. Now we need to take it further: hardening the platform, expanding to multi-region, pushing availability targets to meet mission-critical service requirements, and making the fleet truly self-healing by default. You will lead that next chapter.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

As Kubernetes Platform Tech Lead, you will set the direction, own the outcomes, and lead the team building the infrastructure layer that every engineer at Trade Republic depends on to deploy and scale their services with confidence.

• Set the availability standard: Define the cluster topology and isolation model that gets mission-critical services to their availability targets — dedicated clusters per criticality tier, strict failure boundaries between platform and product workloads, and a disaster recovery posture that has been tested and proven.
• Own the networking architecture: Define the multi-account network fabric the entire fleet runs on — VPC design, private endpoints, cross-account connectivity, and the path toward cross-region and multi-cloud. Ensure services communicate reliably and securely across the entire fleet, regardless of where they run.
• Drive toward zero-touch fleet operations: Own the engineering roadmap that turns cluster and addon management into fully automated, self-healing workflows — where a new cluster is a resource definition and an addon rollout is a versioned profile applied across the entire fleet without manual intervention.
• Define the compute contract with product teams: Set the standards for how workloads run on the platform — resource policies, cluster profiles, workload isolation boundaries — and build the guardrails that prevent the noisy neighbour problem before it reaches production.
• Own the platform end to end: Participate in the on-call rotation, ensuring full end-to-end ownership of the systems you build and operate.

Kafka is becoming the central nervous system of Trade Republic — connecting trading, banking, financial crime detection, and more in real time. Today, scaling our Kafka infrastructure to match the pace of the business means too much manual work, too much operational toil, and not enough time building the platform it could be. We are changing that — treating Kafka clusters as fungible shards of a larger resource pool, with a Temporal-backed control plane, Backstage-integrated self-service, and transparent multi-cluster routing that gives product engineers a zero-config experience.

• Run Kafka at scale: Own the reliability and uptime of our Kafka fleet — design for high availability across domains and shards, engineer for resilience, and ensure near-zero downtime across maintenance, upgrades, and failure scenarios.
• Build the streaming platform: Design and implement the control plane that makes the multi-cluster platform real — cluster lifecycle automation, topic and ACL provisioning, cross-shard replication, and the self-service interfaces that let product engineers onboard without understanding the infrastructure underneath.
• Make streaming best practices the default: Define standards for how product engineers produce and consume — topic design, schema management, consumer group patterns, and reliability practices — and embed them into the platform so the right thing is always the easiest thing.

Platform Engineering is the backbone of Trade Republic's engineering velocity. Our mission is to build scalable platforms for a Europe-scale bank — serving internal engineers, and building in-house control planes for managing the bank's infrastructure. We’re a ~50-person Platform team focused on one thing: enabling product engineers to move fast and operate autonomously by default.

We build self-service platforms, golden paths, and opinionated tooling so that over 400 engineers can ship with confidence. From Kubernetes fleet management and CI/CD to an internal Developer Hub built on Backstage, our work underpins every trade, savings plan, and card payment that flows through the platform.

THE OBSERVABILITY JOURNEY

In 2023 we made a decisive move: we replaced our observability-as-a-service provider with a fully self-hosted observability stack, giving us complete control over cost, data residency, and the developer experience around telemetry. Today our stack spans the full LGTM suite — Grafana, Mimir, Loki, and Tempo — alongside VictoriaMetrics, self-hosted Sentry, Grafana Alloy as our telemetry collector, and OpenTelemetry as the instrumentation standard. We use Pyrra for SLO tracking and are building toward a unified service health dashboard powered by error budgets and burn-rate alerting.

Telemetry is the backbone of how we operate a bank at scale — ingesting over 100 million samples, serving 400+ services, and capturing end-to-end traces from clients through services to system dependencies. Every trade, every card payment depends on our ability to see, measure, and respond to what's happening in production. We've proven the architecture works. Now we're building a dedicated in-house observability team to take it to the next level: stabilise and harden the platform, drive down cost-per-signal, and build the golden path for observability — where 100% of components ship with production-grade telemetry because the best thing to do is the easiest thing to do.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

• Build and evolve the observability platform: Design and operate large-scale telemetry pipelines while continuously improving core components with a strong focus on automation, reliability, and developer experience.
• Build for scale, design for cost: Architect high-throughput telemetry systems with sampling strategies, data tiering, and retention policies that balance signal fidelity with infrastructure cost at scale.
• Make production observable by default: Define and implement observability and reliability standards — SLOs, error budgets, and low-noise alerting — and actively support engineering teams in adopting them, making doing the right thing effortless.
• Own the platform end to end: Participate in the on-call rotation for the observability platform, ensuring full end-to-end ownership of the systems you build and operate.

• Accelerate developer feedback loops: Empower teams to spin up production services in minutes, instrument key developer metrics, and channel those insights back into the platform—cutting cycle times and enabling product engineers to ship great features faster.
• Engineer for resilience at scale: Define and monitor SLOs, burn-rates, and error budgets for every platform service. Continuously improve our platform product through functional and non functional testing. Lead blameless post-incident reviews and automate safety guardrails.
• Own the platform: Shape the roadmap end-to-end—work with product managers to understand user needs, balance cost, latency, and developer experience, pick the right tech, and clearly explain trade-offs to leadership.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

Our database platform is foundational to how Trade Republic works — every trade, savings plan, and card payment touches it. As Database Platform Tech Lead, you will set the direction, own the outcomes, and guide the team building the platform layer that makes database operations self-service, automated, and reliable at scale.

• Set the database reliability standard: Architect the failover mechanisms, replication topology, and recovery strategies that meet our availability targets — and own the engineering roadmap that closes the gap between where we are and the number of 9s the business requires.
• Drive toward zero-touch operations: Define what fully automated database operations look like — provisioning and scaling to zero-downtime migrations — and lead the platform work that gets us there.
• Own the database technology strategy: Define which database technology fits which problem — set the criteria for adoption, govern the portfolio, and ensure every database choice is intentional and operated with the same level of rigour.
• Define the database contract with product teams: Set the standards for how product engineers interact with databases — schema governance, migration patterns, connection pooling, query performance — and build the tooling that makes it effortless to get right.
• Own the platform end to end: Set the operational bar — define on-call practices and incident response standards for database failures, and hold the team to them.
• Own the direction and drive it forward: Define the long-term database platform strategy, drive cross-team initiatives from kickoff to delivery, and align database infrastructure decisions with broader engineering, compliance, and cost goals.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• 5+ years of experience in database engineering, platform engineering, or a related systems discipline, with a track record of technical leadership.
• Deep, hands-on PostgreSQL expertise: strong opinions on replication, sharding, backup strategies, upgrades, and security. Hands-on experience with Postgres automation and lifecycle tooling is required.
• Familiarity with ClickHouse and Cassandra/Scylla in production environments.
• Solid backend engineering background — Go is preferred but any strong language is welcome; familiarity with Kotlin/JVM is a plus as you'll work directly with product teams who rely on it.
• A track record of turning database best practices into opinionated standards that engineering teams actually adopt.
