Within the Museum of Science, the Facilities team plays a critical role in maintaining and advancing the infrastructure that supports one of the region’s most visited cultural institutions. Our team manages complex building systems, campus infrastructure, and capital improvements across a highly dynamic environment that welcomes millions of guests each year. From critical mechanical and electrical systems to large-scale renovation and sustainability initiatives, Facilities ensures the Museum remains safe, operational, and ready to deliver inspiring science experiences every day.
The Project Manager plays a key role in planning and delivering facility, infrastructure, and capital improvement projects across the Museum of Science campus. This position ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget while coordinating internal teams, external consultants, and contractors. The role helps translate strategic priorities into successful physical improvements that support the Museum’s mission and visitor experience.
What You’ll Accomplish
- Deliver Capital and Facilities Projects: Plan and manage capital improvements, renovations, and infrastructure projects from concept through completion, ensuring scope, schedule, and budget objectives are achieved.
- Coordinate Cross-Functional Project Teams: Collaborate with internal stakeholders including Facilities, Exhibits, IT, Operations, and external architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure projects align with operational needs and institutional priorities.
- Manage Project Budgets and Schedules: Develop project plans, track milestones, monitor budgets, and proactively manage risks and changes to keep projects on track.
- Ensure Quality, Safety, and Compliance: Oversee contractor performance and ensure projects comply with building codes, safety requirements, institutional standards, and sustainability goals.
- Support Strategic Campus Improvements: Contribute to the planning and implementation of long-term infrastructure upgrades and facility improvements that enhance the Museum’s operational effectiveness and visitor experience.

Job-Specific Requirements
- Certification in Project Management, Construction Management, Architecture, Facilities Management, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of project management experience in facilities, construction, infrastructure, or capital projects
- Experience coordinating architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants
- Strong understanding of construction documentation, budgets, and project scheduling
- Familiarity with building systems (HVAC, electrical, structural, or infrastructure) preferred
- Experience working in complex operational environments such as museums, universities, hospitals, or public venues is a plus
- Proficiency with project management tools and Microsoft Office Suite

The Electrical Systems Technician I plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Museum’s electrical infrastructure and related building systems. This role supports the Facilities team by diagnosing system issues, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, and coordinating contractor work to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for staff, guests, and animals across the Museum’s complex campus.
What You’ll Accomplish
- Maintain Reliable Electrical Infrastructure: Monitor, diagnose, and implement corrective actions for building electrical systems—including switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, distribution panels, and life safety systems—to ensure reliable operation across the Museum’s 750,000 square feet of facilities.
- Execute Preventative and Corrective Maintenance: Complete work orders efficiently and perform preventative maintenance on electrical and related mechanical systems to minimize downtime and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for visitors and staff.
- Support Continuous Facility Operations: Conduct daily rounds of critical infrastructure, respond to operational issues, and assist with system adjustments or modifications that improve equipment reliability, safety, and performance.
- Coordinate and Oversee Contractor Work: Oversee external contractors performing electrical or mechanical work to ensure compliance with Museum standards and uninterrupted facility operations.
- Respond to Emergencies and Critical Incidents: Provide rapid response to emergencies such as power failures, fire alarms, equipment failures, or building evacuations to protect the safety of staff, guests, and Museum property.
- Maintaining building infrastructure in an educational, institutional, industrial, or similar environment.
What We’re Looking For (Competencies)
- Electrical Systems Expertise: Knowledge of electrical distribution systems up to 480V, including switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, generators, UPS systems, and automatic transfer switches.
- Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Ability to analyze electrical and building systems problems using schematics, diagrams, and diagnostic tools to identify system malfunctions and make repairs.
- Operational Reliability: Does preventative maintenance and system monitoring to ensure critical infrastructure remains reliable and safe.
- Collaboration: Works effectively with facilities staff, contractors, and cross-departmental teams.
- Safety & Compliance Awareness: Understanding of life safety systems, electrical safety practices, and regulatory requirements relevant to institutional facilities.
Jon-Specific Requirements
Required:
- Massachusetts Licensed Electrician OR completion of required classroom hours with the ability to obtain an Electrical License within 18 months of employment
- Experience maintaining building electrical distribution systems (up to 480V)
- Experience with generators, UPS systems, fire alarm systems, and motor control equipment
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and diagrams
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, diagnostic equipment, ladders, and maintenance equipment
- Post-secondary electrician training.
Preferred:
- Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS)
- Experience with Johnson Controls Metasys or similar systems
- Knowledge of mechanical systems and life safety systems

The HVAC Mechanic supports the safe and reliable operation of the Museum of Science’s complex mechanical systems. This role ensures the continuous performance of HVAC and building infrastructure systems that maintain comfortable, safe, and energy-efficient environments for visitors, staff, and exhibits.
What You’ll Accomplish
- Maintain Critical Mechanical Systems: Perform preventative, diagnostic, and corrective maintenance on HVAC and building mechanical systems to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable facility operations.
- Respond to Building System Needs and Operational Requests: Monitor and respond to alarms and operational needs through the Building Management System (BMS), adjusting environmental conditions such as temperature, airflow, and lighting to support museum operations.
- Support Rapid Response to Mechanical and Facility Issues: Prioritize and respond to service requests and mechanical issues to minimize downtime and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for staff and visitors.
- Collaborate Across Trades to Maintain Facility Operation: Work with licensed tradespeople and facilities staff to support a wide range of maintenance activities including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general facility repairs.
- Maintain Accurate Maintenance Documentation: Assist in maintaining maintenance logs, equipment histories, and repair records to ensure clear communication and effective tracking of building systems and infrastructure.
- Support Emergency and Critical Facility Response: Respond to emergency incidents including fire alarms, system failures, building evacuations, and other emergency events as outlined in the Museum’s Emergency Preparedness and Management Plan.
- Maintain Safe and Organized Workspaces: Ensure maintenance shops and facilities areas remain clean, organized, and stocked so that facilities operations can proceed safely and efficiently.

- Mechanical Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose mechanical issues and perform effective repairs on HVAC and related building systems.
- Systems Awareness: Understanding of building mechanical systems, controls, and infrastructure, including Building Management Systems.
- Operational Reliability: Demonstrates accountability and responsiveness in maintaining critical building infrastructure that supports museum operations.
- Collaboration: Works effectively with facilities staff, licensed trades, and external contractors to maintain and repair facility systems.
- Communication: Clearly communicates maintenance needs, system conditions, and operational concerns to supervisors and colleagues.
Job-Specific Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience maintaining building mechanical systems or related mechanical trades experience
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- EPA/CFC license preferred OR ability to obtain within first 12 months
- Ability to respond to facility needs outside of scheduled hours when required
