Your Next Challenge

You will be a technical lead responsible for ensuring that when a researcher submits a job, the software schedules it intelligently and the hardware executes it flawlessly. This involves:

• Designing for Scale: Architecting the next generation of our orchestration layer to ensure that the highest value workloads receive GPU time.
• Operational Excellence: Moving our HPC operations from manual intervention to high-level automation.
• Performance Engineering: Working directly with researchers to squeeze every bit of performance out of our GPU-accelerated computing environment.

Your Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership: Develop the roadmap for managing large-scale HPC systems, including the deployment of compute, networking, and storage in partnership with leadership.
• Full-Stack Ownership: Lead the design and delivery of critical systems that span the entire stack—from the Beaker job scheduler to the execution runtime.
• System Automation: Build innovative tooling and software-defined infrastructure to accelerate researcher velocity and automate cluster health management.
• Performance Optimization: Conduct root-cause analysis on complex distributed system failures and implement optimizations for distributed workloads.

What You’ll Need

• 10+ years of professional experience developing business-critical software and operating large-scale compute infrastructure. Proficiency in Go and/or Python preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in related field; relevant advanced degree may substitute for equivalent years of technical work experience
• Deep Linux Expertise: Expert-level knowledge of Linux internals, and container runtimes like Docker.
• Distributed Systems Mastery: A proven track record of designing, debugging, and optimizing high-scale distributed systems and databases.
• HPC Foundations: Applied experience with workload schedulers (like Kubernetes or Slurm) and high-performance networking (NCCL and InfiniBand).

Your Next Challenge:

You will be a part of the core team of research and machine learning engineers working on the infrastructure, architecture, modeling and training of Olmo (Open Language Model) at all stages: pre-training, mid-training, post-training and all emerging paradigms. In this role you will be owning the design and implementation of the systems that train these models. You will be responsible for building scalable machine learning pipelines as we push the boundaries of large language modeling research. You will be collaborating with colleagues inside and outside your own team, but you are responsible for a feature or experiment from start to finish, from conception to implementation.

What You’ll Need: 

• Expertise at building ML infrastructure - having 4+ years of industry experience building infrastructure that handles data preprocessing/transformation and model training, evaluation, inference, and deployment
• Deep experience in the complete model development cycle, including data set construction, training, tuning, evaluation, performance profiling, and monitoring
• Knowledge of modern deep learning and natural language processing techniques
• Strong software engineering skills, particularly around building performant systems and debugging
• At-home with hands-on programming – must have experience with Python and PyTorch/Jax/Tensorflow. We expect you to be the kind of engineer who can pick up a new programming language, library, or API as needed without it being a big deal.
• Familiarity working with cloud compute resources (e.g. AWS) and containerization (e.g. Docker)

This leader will be responsible for the full lifecycle of our high-performance computing (HPC) environment which includes on-prem GPU clusters and the software orchestration layer that schedules workloads across a hybrid cloud environment.

• Systems Expert: You have a deep understanding of the Linux kernel, container runtimes, and distributed systems. You understand the performance implications of InfiniBand topologies and NCCL optimizations.

Your Next Challenge:

You will be a part of the core team of research engineers working on the infrastructure, architecture, modeling and training of the next generation of architectures of foundation models, with a focus on continual learning. In this role you will be owning the design and implementation of the systems that train these models. You will be responsible for building scalable machine learning pipelines as we push the boundaries of large language modeling research. You will be collaborating with colleagues inside and outside your own team, but you are responsible for a feature or experiment from start to finish, from conception to implementation.

• 4+ years of experience building infrastructure that handles data preprocessing/transformation and model training, evaluation, inference, and deployment. Experience in the complete model development cycle, including data set construction, training, tuning, evaluation, performance profiling, and monitoring.
• Knowledge of modern deep learning and natural language processing techniques.
• Strong software engineering skills, particularly around building performant systems and debugging.
• Must have experience with Python and PyTorch/Jax/Tensorflow as well as feel at ease in picking up new programming languages, libraries, or APIs  as tools as project needs evolve.

Our base salary range is $167,030 - $260,570, and in addition we have generous bonus plans to provide a competitive compensation package.

Who We Are: 

We are a non-profit AI institute, focused on developing foundational AI research and innovation to deliver real-world impact through large-scale open models, the science of agentic systems, data, and artifacts (e.g., OpenScholar, OLMo, Tulu, and Scholar QA).   We unite the best and brightest scientific and engineering minds to explore the potential of truly open AI. Through our efforts we endeavor to empower academics, researchers, and AI developers more broadly to advance language models and reasoning-based agentic systems. Through close collaboration, we rapidly identify, define, and act on the most exciting and promising new ideas in AI.  

Our team is focused on developing agentic systems to revolutionize the way science is performed. We engage in language model post-training, generating and curating data, layering control strategies (e.g., POMDPs) atop LLMs, and developing novel methodologies to push the field forward. We study and evaluate AI models both theoretically and empirically, aiming to advance their capabilities. Additionally, we create impactful real-world applications, such as in scientific synthesis. Our goal is to develop state-of-the-art models that excel in scientific reasoning spanning literature synthesis, hypothesis formation, scientific coding, execution of computational experiments, and data analysis. These systems will collaborate with human scientists, not replace them.

Your Next Challenge:

As a key member of the core team of research scientists and machine learning engineers at Ai2, you will drive the development of AI systems with deep reasoning capabilities with a focus on the huge breadth of skills necessary for scientific reasoning. In this role, you will lead foundational research to advance agentic systems, shape our strategic direction, and lay the groundwork for future innovations. You will also work towards long-term ambitious research goals, while identifying intermediate milestones. 

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

• Contribute to Ai2’s open source research environment to innovate,  study and advance the science of generative AI and agentic systems.
• Take a leading role in building artifacts and implementing software systems with real-world impact
• Author and present high-quality scientific technical reports, papers, and presentations
• Collaborate with and learn from team members across Ai2, including scientists and engineers
• Mentor early-career researchers and interns on their projects
• Develop collaborative relationships with relevant academic, industrial, government, and standards organizations

What You’ll Need:

• A PhD focusing on machine learning, reasoning, natural language processing, or a related area, with expertise in one or more of the following: reinforcement learning, experimental methodology, language models, the science of deep learning, or efficient algorithms for deep learning.  Curiosity about all of the above is a plus.
• The ability to own and pursue a research agenda to improve AI model reasoning capabilities.
• Enthusiasm for collaboration and teamwork on ambitious projects aligned with company goals.
• Experience leading a team to solve analytical problems (a plus).
• Contributions to open-source research libraries and an interest in continuing such work (a plus).
