About the internship

Stripe's Applied ML, Data Science, Risk, and Payments organizations are excited to offer PhD machine learning engineering internships for the summer of 2026. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to critical projects that directly enhance Stripe's suite of products, focusing on areas such as foundation models used for dozens of tasks e.g. fraud detection, enhanced support, and predicting user behavior.

As an intern, you'll tackle challenging problems at the intersection of finance, technology, and data. You'll have the chance to work on creative projects like the Stripe Assistant and the Stripe Foundation Model, which leverage machine learning to revolutionize how businesses interact with financial services and data.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deploy large-scale machine learning systems that drive significant business value across various domains.
• Engage in the end-to-end process of designing, training, improving, and launching machine learning models.
• Write production-scale ML models that will be deployed to help Stripe enable economic infrastructure access for a diverse range of businesses globally.
• Collaborate across teams to incorporate feedback and proactively seek solutions to challenges.
• Rapidly learn new technologies and approaches, demonstrating a strong ability to ask insightful questions and communicate the status of your work effectively.

Who you are

Minimum requirements

• A deep understanding of computer science, obtained through the pursuit of a PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a closely related field, with the expectation of graduating in winter 2026 or spring/summer 2027.
• Practical experience with programming and machine learning, evidenced by projects, classwork, or research. Familiarity with languages such as Python, Scala, Spark and libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, and Scikit-learn.
• Expertise in areas of machine learning such as supervised and unsupervised learning techniques, ML operations, and possibly experience in Large Language Models or Reinforcement Learning.
• Demonstrated ability to work on collaborative projects, with experience in receiving and applying feedback from various stakeholders.
• A proactive approach to learning unfamiliar systems and a demonstrated ability to understand complex systems independently.
• Intent to return to the degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.

Preferred qualifications

You Might Also Have:

• Two years of university education or equivalent experience, with in-depth knowledge in specific domains of machine learning.
• Published and presented peer-reviewed articles in top-tier venues.
• Experience in writing high-quality pull requests, maintaining good test coverage, and completing projects with minimal defects.
• Familiarity with navigating new codebases and managing work across different programming languages.
• Excellent written communication skills to clearly articulate your work to both team members and wider Stripe audiences.

About the team

Our Data Science team partners deeply with teams across Stripe to ensure that our users, our products, and our business have the models, data products, and insights needed to make decisions and grow responsibly. We’re looking for data scientists with a passion for analyzing data, building machine learning and statistical models, and running experiments to drive impact.  Our work is broad and varied, influencing how our products work (e.g. understanding user needs, preventing fraud, or optimizing charge flows), how our business works (forecasting key outcomes, managing liquidity, quantifying risk exposure), how our go-to-market motions operate (designing growth experiments, optimizing marketing investments, refining sales processes, and estimating causal effects), and everything in between. We have a variety of Data Science roles and teams across Stripe and will seek to align you to the most relevant team based on your background.

About the internship experience

Our internship program provides the opportunity to work on meaningful business initiatives that will grow the GDP of the internet. Through the internship, you will work with many systems and technologies, gain experience in working with large datasets and analytical methodologies/tools to help us better understand our users and build better products.

As you collaborate with industry experts on initiatives that expand global commerce, you will develop a strong first-hand understanding of the role analytics plays in steering business strategy and results.

Responsibilities

You will:

• Partner closely with Data Scientists, Data Analysts, and business partners to drive business impact through rigorous analytical solutions
• Apply machine learning, causal inference, or advanced analytics on large datasets to: i) measure results and outcomes, ii) identify causal impact and attribution, iii) predict the future performance of users or products, to drive business success
• Influence business actions and strategy by developing actionable insights through metrics and dashboards.
• Drive the collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources.
• Learn quickly by asking great questions, finding how to work with your mentor and teammates effectively, and communicating the status of your work clearly
• Present your work to the Data Science team, partner teams, and fellow interns

Who you are

Minimum requirements

We’re looking for someone who has:

• Enrolled in a quantitative PhD program (e.g. Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, etc.) with the expectation of graduating in winter 2026 or spring/summer 2027
• Experience with a scientific computing language (such as Python, R, etc) and SQL. We believe new programming languages can be learned if the fundamentals and general knowledge are present!
• Knowledge and hands-on experience in several of the following areas: machine learning, statistics, optimization, product analytics, causal inference, and/or experimentation
• Experience communicating and collaborating with multidisciplinary stakeholders in a team environment

Preferred qualifications

You also likely have:

• Experience writing and debugging data pipelines
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate and receive feedback from mentors, peers, and stakeholders via experience from previous internships or other multi-person projects
• Ability to learn new systems and form an understanding of those systems, through independent research and working with a mentor and subject matter experts

The Accounting Team is responsible for understanding and telling Stripe’s financial story and shaping our collective understanding of how Stripe is performing as a business. Our primary focus is maintaining a well-controlled environment that effectively supports corporate governance, financial reporting and disclosure requirements. We advise and enable Stripe to grow – supporting all products at Stripe, consulting on accounting implications and supporting teams’ ability to make informed strategic decisions. We operate in a fast-paced environment and collaborate significantly with cross-functional and international teams.

What you’ll do

Our Accounting team is seeking an innovative embedded technical resource to help us scale for the future, in a fast-paced environment that’s growing rapidly. You’ll leverage your accounting, artificial intelligence (AI), and technical expertise to build intelligent solutions that enhance Stripe’s accounting capabilities. You’ll develop AI-powered tools and models, autonomous agents, and data products that automate complex workflows and provide actionable insights within a framework of financial reporting control. Working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, accounting, and product development, you'll collaborate with engineering and finance teams to deploy cutting-edge AI applications that scale with Stripe's growth and support our mission of increasing the GDP of the internet. 

Responsibilities

• Apply your accounting and finance domain expertise to identify, explore, and prototype high-impact opportunities where AI can solve complex accounting challenges 
• Build using AI-powered tools and artificial intelligence solutions to automate accounting workflows, enhance controllership, and scale our operations
• Design and deploy autonomous AI agents using frameworks that can reason, plan, and execute complex multi-step problems and enhance decision-making processes through understanding risk and maintaining effective financial reporting controls.
• Ship and maintain interactive data products and self-service analytics tools using SQL and Python frameworks (data visualization and dashboards, low-code application building frameworks) that provide real-time insights and actionable intelligence
• Work across Accounting and partner teams to uncover efficiency opportunities, including AI use cases, document requirements, and translate complex financial workflows into well controlled technical solutions
• Partner with Accounting and SOX teams to assess and develop an effective internal controls approach to AI-based accounting solutions

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

• 10+ years of relevant experience, with at least 4+ years of experience in accounting related or adjacent roles (e.g. finance systems, process improvement) 
• B.A. or B.S degree in Accounting, Finance, Finance Systems or Information Systems
• Fluency in U.S. GAAP
• Advanced proficiency in SQL, including writing complex queries, using CTEs (common table expressions), window functions, and joins for data analysis and pipeline logic
• Familiarity with modern data tools (Python, Databricks, ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines) and coding with AI assistance
• Comprehensive understanding of AI fundamentals and experience with emerging AI/LLM tools, conversational interfaces, prompt engineering, or automation platforms and RPA
• Solution and results-oriented, with a focus on delivering impact in a fast-paced environment 
• Excellent communication and organizational skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey financial concepts to both financial and non-financial audiences
• Experience with internal controls (design, implementation and execution)
