About the role

Starburst is looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer to sit at the intersection of software engineering and data engineering — building the internal platforms, pipelines, and data products that power how we understand our customers and our business. You'll work across Starburst Enterprise and Starburst Galaxy, using our own technology to solve real problems at scale, while also contributing software that other teams depend on.

Because data engineers are one of our primary target personas, you'll bring a uniquely valuable perspective: you'll use our products daily and feed that experience directly back into how we build and improve them. You'll work closely with a dynamic, talented, globally distributed team, writing production-quality software alongside building reliable data systems — with a consistent emphasis on quality, maintainability, and speed to insight.

As a Staff Software Engineer at Starburst you will:

• Design, build, and operate a high-quality data lake and the software systems that feed it, supporting product management, finance, customer support, and engineering
• Write production-grade software — services, APIs, tooling, and automation — that enables data workflows and integrations at scale
• Find innovative ways to use Trino and Starburst to solve complex data management and software architecture challenges
• Collaborate with technical leads, product managers, and data analysts to build robust data products and analytics
• Leverage AI to democratize access to datasets for users throughout Starburst, including building and maintaining the software infrastructure that makes this possible
• Enable dataset preparation and model evaluation for Starburst's AI projects
• Define and evolve engineering processes and best practices that span both software and data domains, with a focus on reliability and actionable results
• Work closely with leaders across teams to iterate on data architecture and the software systems that implement it, keeping quality high at every layer
• Identify emerging patterns in data management and software engineering, and work with Starburst's product teams to bring those innovations to market

• Strong software engineering fundamentals: writing clean, testable, well-reviewed code in Java, Python, or Scala
• Experience building and optimizing data pipelines using Trino, Spark, dbt, and related frameworks
• Experience designing and building backend services, APIs, and data platform components
• Experience managing data and application infrastructure in public clouds, particularly AWS (EMR, EC2, S3, IAM); multi-cloud experience (GCP/Azure) is a plus
• Experience using and managing orchestration frameworks such as Apache Airflow or Dagster
• Knowledge of RAG and other design patterns for AI-powered applications

• Knowledge of data modeling techniques appropriate for modern data lakes
• Proficiency with Configuration-as-Code and Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Pulumi, Terraform, and/or Ansible

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the organizational ability to coordinate across teams

About the role

We're scaling fast, and we need our IT infrastructure to keep up. We're looking for an IT Engineer based in Poland to join a nimble, cross-functional team supporting a distributed, Global workforce across various time zones. In this role, you'll be a key player in keeping our systems, tools, and people running smoothly – balancing day-to-day end-user support with longer-term infrastructure and automation work. You'll need strong communication skills, a solutions and system oriented mindset, as well as a bias for action. This is a hybrid role with an expectation of 2–3 days in office per week.

The ideal candidate is excited to help support team members globally, build automated systems that scale, and have experience managing identity and access in Okta and Google Workspace as well as working knowledge in the following SaaS platforms Atlassian, Slack, and MDM platforms Jamf and Intune.

As a IT Engineer at Starburst you will: 

• Help with the design of Starburst's MDM strategy building scalable, secure, and seamless experiences in Jamf and Intune – serving as the primary driver of endpoint management across the organization.
• Help manage Okta with working knowledge of concepts such as SSO, SCIM, least privilege, role-based access, provisioning, and de-provisioning as well as enforce strong security policies.
• Ability to develop complex automations using Okta Workflows, Workato, or similar iPaaS/automation tools as well as incorporating and working with 3rd party APIs.
• Manage collaboration tools Slack, Microsoft 365, and primarily Google Workspace including app suite and enforcing email security policies.
• Manage GitHub and enforce collaboration and development policies (code review and security).
• Provide IT support to local and remote end-users within timezone, serving as a responsive and reliable first point of contact for technical issues.
• Manage IT asset inventory and maintain Warsaw office AV equipment for conference rooms, offsites and company events.
• Collaborate with the People team to manage and optimize employee lifecycle workflows.
• Partner with the InfoSecurity and Engineering teams to ensure adherence to industry best practices across the full IT and infrastructure stack.
• Implement and enforce security best practices including regular audits and vulnerability assessments; collaborate with the InfoSec team to support quarterly and annual compliance reviews (ISO 27001, SOC2, GDPR, CCPA, etc.).

• A minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience as an IT Engineer or a similar role.
• Build and maintain automation scripts to streamline tasks using Bash, Python, or other scripting languages; working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code concepts is a plus, though expert-level experience is not required.
• Familiarity with managing office networks. Bonus if experienced with Ubiquiti UniFi network infrastructure.

You will lead the design and implementation of JVM-based services and the surrounding infrastructure: Kubernetes deployments, Docker image strategy, CI/CD automation, AWS integrations, and secure enterprise authentication flows. This is a staff-level role requiring architectural leadership, cross-team influence, and long-term platform ownership.

As a Staff Software Engineer at Starburst, you will: 

• Own critical backend and platform components that orchestrate distributed compute (Spark, Trino) for enterprise customers.
• Lead the design and implementation of JVM-based services and the surrounding infrastructure, including Kubernetes deployments, Docker image strategy, CI/CD automation, AWS integrations, and secure enterprise authentication flows.
• Provide architectural leadership, cross-team influence, and long-term platform ownership.

Some of the things we look for:

• Deep Backend Engineering & Distributed Systems:
• 8+ years of professional backend experience, with strong expertise in Java (primary and required) and production experience building JVM-based services.
• Experience designing and operating distributed systems in production. Working with Spark, Trino/Presto, or comparable distributed compute engines is a strong plus.
• Extensive experience designing and evolving RESTful APIs, including validation, error modeling, pagination, filtering, backward-compatible versioning, and OpenAPI documentation.
• Infrastructure & Operations:
• Hands-on production experience with Kubernetes (authoring manifests/Helm charts) and strong Docker experience (multi-stage builds, image optimization, security best practices).
• Experience owning CI/CD for complex Java codebases, using GitHub Actions (preferred) or Jenkins.
• Practical AWS experience with S3 (or S3-compatible object storage), IAM roles/policies, and AWS SSO.

About the role:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the fully distributed Starburst Galaxy Reliability, Scalability, & Efficiency team, you’ll own the reliability, scalability and efficiency (performance/$) of Starburst Galaxy IaaS/SaaS as we grow. You will help design and build core infrastructure around Trino of the Galaxy Product itself, as well as build “the machine that builds the machine” that is used to operate our SaaS at scale. Daily tasks will include developing the backend infrastructure related to product features, building operational tooling, supporting our product in production, and driving collaboration with various stakeholders around the reliability, scalability and efficiency of Starburst Galaxy.

On the Core Infrastructure team, you will ensure the reliability and scalability of the Starburst Galaxy infrastructure as we grow to meet the demands of our customers. You’ll own the apis for provisioning and upgrading cloud infrastructure across AWS, Azure & GCP. 

On the Delivery & Enablement team, you will enable the engineering organization to iterate on Galaxy confidently with maximum velocity, and minimum disruption.  You’ll own everything from continuous delivery to the tooling to provision and maintain developer environments. 

On the Observability team, you will provide comprehensive tooling, and the underlying infrastructure primitives, for the introspection and administration of the Starburst Galaxy product. This requires modifying both Trino and Starburst Galaxy services to maximize introspection while owning infrastructure that ensures that relevant data is surfaced in an accessible way to both internal and external customers. 

As a Senior Software Engineer you will:

• Develop and optimize the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of Starburst Galaxy service
• Design and build the core operational infrastructure of the Starburst Galaxy service following the immutable cloud infrastructure paradigm
• Continuously improve our engineering processes, tests, and systems that allow us to scale the code base and productivity of the team
• Provide considerate and timely review of your peers' pull requests and design proposals
