AIR SEPARATION UNIT OPERATIONS LEAD

As an air separation operations lead, you will own the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of SpaceX’s air separation unit that produces the high-purity liquid oxygen required for Starship. This role is critical to achieving rapid launch cadence and supporting Starship’s development at scale. You will lead operations teams, drive continuous improvement in plant performance, and help eliminate supply risk for one of the most propellant-intensive launch vehicles ever built. RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead daily operations of air separation plants, including startup, shutdown, and steady-state production, targeting >98% availability within the first 12 months
Hire and train an excellent engineering and operations team.
Establish and improve operating procedures, alarm response plans, and troubleshooting for all air separation unit systems
Partner with maintenance and design teams to reduce downtime and find the root cause
Own operational safety and overall plant safety management
Meet or exceed expected plant efficiency and output (distillation efficiency, power consumption, product purity)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

2+ years of hands-on experience operating or directly supervising air separation units (ASU), large-scale industrial gas plants, or other commercial-scale process facilities
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, or other engineering discipline

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Demonstrated experience leading teams in 24/7 industrial operations
5+ years of experience in air separation or cryogenic operations
Strong working knowledge of cryogenic distillation, turboexpanders, centrifugal compressors, and molecular sieve systems
Experience with data and control systems (Honeywell, Siemens, or Rockwell preferred)
Track record of improving plant reliability and efficiency or reducing specific power consumption

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Hardware is typically built in tight quarters, and physical dexterity is required
Work performed in an environment with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
Occasionally exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments (heat, cold, rain)
Hours vary depending on site operational needs; flexibility required
Stand: Up to 1 hour per day
Sit: Up to 10 hours per day
Push/Pull: Up to 50 lb (unassisted) 15 minutes or less per day
Overhead reach: Up to 1 hour per day
Walk: Up to 3 hours per day
Lift/Carry: Up to 50 lb (unassisted) 15 minutes or less per day
Climb (ladder/stairs): Up to 1 hour per day
Kneel/Crouch: Up to 1 hour per day
Upper body twist: Up to 1 hour per day
Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees, up to 3 hours per day

LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS PROCESS/PROJECT ENGINEER

We are seeking an experienced engineer to join SpaceX to support methane liquefaction infrastructure build, as well as natural gas pipeline design projects. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of process fundamentals and project management skills to make high-level technical decisions, coordinate cross-functional efforts, and drive projects to completion in a timely, safe, and efficient manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide engineering and project management support for methane liquefaction systems and natural gas pipeline installations
Coordinate with internal multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to align on high-level technical decisions
Coordinate with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms on the design and build of natural gas pipeline and methane liquefaction infrastructure
Manage relationships with third-party contractors and vendors for core equipment (e.g., compressors, heat exchangers, cryogenic systems), ensuring deliverables meet quality, safety, and performance standards
Oversee project execution from concept to commissioning, conducting regular progress reviews, site visits, and adjustments to maintain schedule, safety, and efficiency
Apply fundamental knowledge of liquefaction processes to optimize design and evaluate contractor proposals
Ensure all activities adhere to safety protocols, environmental standards, and best practices for timely project delivery

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in chemical, mechanical, or petroleum engineering
3+ years of relevant experience in liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing, cryogenics, or the natural gas industry

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Strong understanding of process fundamentals: cryogenic thermodynamics, heat exchangers, compressors, and expanders
Hands-on experience with LNG plant operations and liquefaction systems
Familiarity with process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen, HYSYS, ProMax)
Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and with 3rd party vendors
Knowledge of applicable codes and standards for LNG and pipeline design
Familiarity with renewable or alternative energy applications
Prior work in fast-paced, innovative environments, such as energy startups or industrial gas sectors

Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
Must be willing to travel to other launch sites in support of build and operational activities and launches; travel requirement is up to 15%

CHEMICAL PROCESS ENGINEER (STARSHIP LAUNCH SYSTEMS)

The Starship launch team is looking for a highly motivated individual to support launch pad fluid systems design and build with a focus on the implementation of cryogenic propellant processing and generation systems for all Starship launch sites, landing sites, test sites, production facilities, etc. Join the team responsible for launching the largest and most powerful rocket known to man!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design, build, and operate systems that support critical rocket launches and testing
Perform thermofluid analysis and other design tasks associated with gaseous and liquid (including cryogenic liquid) fluid systems
Manage the fabrication and installation of fluid systems and other construction projects occurring at the launch and test sites
Help SpaceX develop state-of-the-art technologies for all aspects of the production of cryogenic rocket propellants (oxygen and methane)
Design, build, and commission air separation, liquefaction, liquified natural gas production, and other cryogenic process equipment
Perform balance of plant calculations for cryogenic systems
Manage interdisciplinary engineering projects from concept through design, build, and activation
Work closely with operational teams, cooperating to ensure system design is well-understood and easy to operate long-term

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in mechanical, chemical, or aerospace engineering
1+ years of hands-on experience working with fluid systems in a professional setting (internships qualify)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Advanced degree in mechanical, aerospace, or chemical engineering
Degree in chemical engineering
Strong working knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and process engineering
Demonstrated expertise in designing and operating cryogenic fluid systems
Experience in the filtration and distillation of liquid gases, including liquid air and liquid natural gas
Experience with cryogenic systems in maritime environments
CAD capability for 3D Modeling (NX, SolidWorks, etc.)
Knowledge of engineering standards and best practices
Knowledge of safety protocols for handling, storage, and transportation of cryogenic propellants in accordance with industry standards
Experience operating and troubleshooting control systems required for remote operations
Experience commissioning and or plant operation (liquified natural gas, air separation unit)
Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment, including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers
Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment
Self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail
Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight
Demonstrated ability to lead a team of talented and driven engineers
