Senior Principal Machine Learning Engineer
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical strategy and execution for SoundCloud’s ML systems (e.g., recommendation, ranking, personalization), including model development, deployment, and scaling
- Lead the exploration of advanced modeling techniques including Deep Neural Networks, LLMs, large recommender systems, multi-modal embeddings and transformer-based architectures to create unique and impactful listening experiences
- Define and drive the overall technical direction for ML in SoundCloud including model architecture, feature engineering, training and serving infrastructure at scale, feature stores, pipeline orchestration, and model registry and versioning all aimed at accelerating our ability to bring ML-powered features to market
- Own short- and long-term objectives, ensuring ML investments deliver measurable user and business impact
- Lead, mentor, and grow ML Engineers and Scientists across SoundCloud
- Be a strategic partner to the CTO in bringing an “ML Everywhere” strategy to all surfaces in the product (both Creator and Fan), and helping to lead the charge on AI-native engineering
- Stay current with industry trends and advancements in machine learning, identifying opportunities to apply them at SoundCloud
- Lead the leveraging of agentic workflows and AI-assisted engineering as a force multiplier to work at 10x the speed of traditional methods
Experience and Background:
- 10+ years of experience in ML engineering, plus 3+ years in search or recommendations in an internet scale service with the reach of tens of millions of daily active users. Experience in a music streaming environment is a bonus
- Proven track record of defining technical strategy and driving execution for large-scale ML systems, particularly in recommendation, personalization, or search
- Experience setting technical roadmaps, influencing cross-functional priorities, and balancing business, product, and engineering trade-offs at an organizational level
- Experience leading and scaling teams of ML Engineers and Scientists, including hiring, mentoring, and developing high-performing talent
- Deep expertise in delivering data-driven products and ML solutions at scale on cloud-based platforms, with strong understanding of infrastructure and lifecycle management
- Hands-on familiarity with modern ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow) and data processing pipelines, combined with strong software engineering foundations
- Thought leadership in ML and data science, with a track record of driving technical innovation and applying emerging industry trends
- Exceptional communication, strategic influence, and cross-functional leadership skills across senior stakeholders and global teams
The salary range for this role is $280,000 - $325,000 annually. The final salary offered will be determined based on relative experience, skills, internal equity, and location. We also offer a generous total rewards program - read more about additional benefits and perks below!

Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Recommendations (Product)
You'll own features end-to-end: from understanding user needs with Product and Design, to architecting data pipelines processing billions of events, to building and shipping production ML systems that balance performance, cost, and user experience. This means working across BigQuery (trillion-row datasets), Airflow orchestration, real-time serving infrastructure (BigTable), APIs, and constant collaboration with Product, Design, Engineering, and Platform teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, test, and productionize ML and LLM-based systems serving real users
- Design and build end-to-end ML pipelines, including data, features, training, and serving
- Make technical decisions considering cost, latency, complexity, and maintainability
- Navigate distributed systems (BigQuery, BigTable, Airflow, DynamoDB) to build reliable, scalable solutions
- Set up monitoring, A/B testing, and metrics frameworks to measure real user impact
- Debug complex issues across data pipelines, ML models, and distributed systems
- Contribute to technical strategy and team best practices
- Leverage agentic workflows and AI-assisted engineering as a force multiplier to work at 10x the speed of traditional methods
Experience and Background:
- 1-2+ years building ML systems in production - you understand the difference between a model that works in Jupyter and one that serves millions of users
- 4+ years of software engineering experience - you write production code, not just notebooks
- Strong Python and Scala (or Java/JVM) skills, with experience writing scalable, production code
- Experience building and deploying ML models end-to-end (data, training, serving, monitoring)
- Experience building and deploying LLM-based features in production
- Familiarity with integrating LLMs into ML systems (e.g. retrieval-augmented generation, model serving)
- Understanding of shared ML architecture across domains (e.g. search and recommendations)
- Strong focus on data quality and correctness, and how upstream data impacts downstream models and user experience
- Strong SQL skills for massive datasets (BigQuery, Spark)
- Cloud platform experience (AWS/GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Experience with distributed data processing and ETL pipelines (Airflow, Spark)
- Familiarity with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch

We are looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our Recommendations Experience team, focusing on building ML-powered features that directly improve personalization, engagement, and satisfaction for our users. Lead Principal Software Engineer/Systems Architect
You will drive scalable API design, cloud-native infrastructure, and operational excellence while collaborating across Product, Engineering, Data, and Security teams. You will define the paved road for SoundCloud's 200+ engineers, ensuring architectural standards that enable scalability and velocity while reducing risk. You will also be part of a small group leading the charge in architecting the agentic workflows and LLM-assisted systems that will allow us to deliver features at 10x the speed of traditional teams. We are seeking someone who is passionate about building best-in-class APIs and distributed systems, mentoring engineers, and fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation while adopting the most impactful AI-powered software engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Jump into highly complex legacy systems to understand not only the current state, but identifying root causes of architectural friction and a path forward
- Transition seamlessly from deep-dive debugging to high-level system design, conceiving and socializing the overall plan for SoundCloud’s API and core infrastructure
- Lead from the trenches by writing foundational, high-performance code that sets the gold standard for engineering excellence
- Leverage agentic workflows and AI-assisted engineering as a force multiplier to map legacy logic and accelerate the modernization of core systems at 10x the speed of traditional methods
- Help establish guardrails, guidelines, and knowledge bases so these agents will act with efficiency and safety for you and the other engineering teams
- Ensure that throughout its evolution, the platform is performant, scalable, reliable, and malleable. The goal is long term stability, reduced risk, and higher velocity, improved visibility, and rapid experimentation.
- Partner with other senior engineers as we define and build the next generation of SoundCloud’s systems
- Collaborate with Product, Frontend, Data, Security, and Platform teams to deliver solutions aligned with business and user needs
- Partner with the CTO and other key technical leads in the company to identify the most critical projects
Experience and Background:
- 10+ years of experience with a proven track record of entering "unknown-unknown" environments and bringing architectural order to chaos in high-scale distributed systems
- Deep experience with REST/GraphQL APIs, microservices, caching, databases, and cloud infrastructure (AWS and/or GCP)
- Strong mentoring and team development skills, with ability to influence cross-functional engineering and product teams
- A systems thinker with the heart of a hacker. You must be equally comfortable whiteboarding a 3-year roadmap as you are in a high-pressure war room debugging a production bottleneck
- Proven experience leading 'strike teams' or 'SWAT units' in high-scale environments where you were personally responsible for both the diagnostic and the delivery
