SENIOR WELD ENGINEER

Rocket Lab is seeking an experienced Senior Weld Engineer to be based at our Engine Development Center in Long Beach, CA. This role will work under the direction of the Materials & Processes Department to lead the development, qualification, implementation, and continuous improvement of many welding processes used in the production of the Archimedes Engine for Neutron. This candidate shall be the main technical point of contact for all welding-related production issues and shall interface frequently with Manufacturing engineering teams to resolve these issues.

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:

• Develop and implement procedures and process improvements for all welding activities used in the production of the Archimedes Engine.
• Author welding process specifications and PQR’s for each welding process on the Archimedes Engine.
• Define welding acceptance criteria in accordance with AWS D17.1 and other relevant NASA standards.
• Improve welding processes by conducting root cause analyses on weld related nonconformances.
• Provide expert guidance on weld repair rework, repair, and dispositioning.
• Support production operations on full scale welded assemblies, providing directions to manufacturing engineers and welders on correct techniques in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• Work closely with design, tooling, and manufacturing engineers to improve welded designs for manufacturing.
• Develop and execute welding qualification test campaigns and interpret mechanical testing and NDE results.
• General support of M&P related projects.

YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or technical discipline
• 5+ years of experience in welding engineering working with TIG, Laser, MIG, or EBEAM for aerospace applications.
• Hands-on fabrication, manufacturing, or testing experience of welded assemblies.

 THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

• Working experience with Laser Welding, GTAW, GMAW, and Orbital GTAW welding processes with a variety of materials.
• CAD / modeling experienced with SOLIDWORKS, NX
• Experience with X-ray quality structural welding, seal welding, and hard facing overlays.
• Working knowledge of carbon / stainless-steel / Nickel based metallurgy. Familiarity with Copper and Nickel based alloys
• Strong knowledge of metallurgy fundamentals, material specifications, and heat-treatment requirements.
• Tooling design experience for welded assemblies to reduce part distortion and improve part consistency.
• Understanding of weld strength testing methodologies, standards, and data acquisition systems used to make informed welding decisions (ASTM E8, E399, E740, ISO 15653, AWS D17.X, AWS C7.X, thermos-couples, strain gages, etc.)
• Experience with root cause analysis and corrective actions including, but not limited to, optical and SEM fractography/metallography, hardness, chemical analysis, and mechanical testing.
• In depth knowledge of AWS D17.1 and related industry welding codes/standards

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING TECHNICIAN I/II - B SHIFT

Based onsite at Rocket Lab's global headquarters in Long Beach, California the Additive Manufacturing Technician II is responsible for supporting various Additive technologies (LPBF, DED, Hybrid Solutions) with various alloys. This role will support all Additive processes involved with the Rutherford & Archimedes engines. You will support the Manager of Additive Manufacturing and Production Additive Manufacturing organization, with deliverables required for internal leadership, board of directors, and investors.

This opening is for B Shift Monday - Friday from 1pm-9:30pm PST. 

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:

• Uphold and follow all Additive safety measures – be an advocate for safe operations.
• Prepare additive print jobs for success through attention to detail on setups.
• Operate a variety of metal 3D printers, experience with EOS, SLM, & DMG preferred.
• Identify and troubleshoot mechanical, optical laser, electrical, and build issues.
• Conduct calibration of 3D Printers and interpret findings with Engineering.
• Ensure conformance of part/build through independent inspection and print detail verification.
• Follow work orders, procedures, specifications, and test instructions with attention to detail. Communicate any issues that are found.
• Perform daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance – as directed by Engineering.
• Provide process improvement feedback and implement solutions in collaboration with Engineering.
• Collaborate with Engineers on setup and fabrication of 3D prints and new hardware.
• Kick off issue tickets based on process/product non-conformances.
• Drive Additive Internal 5S system with actions promoting sustainability in the Additive Department.
• Utilize measurement tools (micrometer, caliper, surface plate etc.) to ensure high quality inputs and outputs, including post-print inspection and post-processing inspection.

(Please note: this position can be hired at the Additive Manufacturing Technician I or Additive Manufacturing Technician II level)

YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS AS AN ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING TECHNICIAN I:

• 1+ years of experience in manufacturing, fabrication, assembly or testing environment.
• Proficient in hand, power, and pneumatic tools such as drills, chisels, taps.
• Proficient in inspection methods: surface plate, calipers, micrometers, height gauge.
• Experience with operating machine tools: vertical mills, lathes, media blasters, cranes, or forklifts.
• High School diploma or GED

YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS AS AN ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING TECHNICIAN II:

• 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, assembly or testing environment.
• Proficient in hand, power, and pneumatic tools such as drills, chisels, taps.
• Proficient in inspection methods: surface plate, calipers, micrometers, height gauge.
• Experience with operating machine tools: vertical mills, lathes, media blasters, cranes, or forklifts
• High School diploma or GED.

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

• 4+ years of experience with operating metal 3D printers and knowledge of associated hazards Experience with Additive Manufacturing (AM) principles.
• Experience interpreting engineering drawings.
• Experience using JIRA.

• Ability to work the following shift, Monday-Friday 1pm-9:30pm PST. 
• Standing for long periods of time, climbing up and down ladders, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching may be required to perform the functions of this position 
• Able to lift up to 25lbs. unassisted 
• Must be able to climb ladders and be comfortable working in tight spaces. 
• Must be able to move repetitively, bend or twist, and use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls.

MATERIALS LAB TECHNICIAN II

Based at Rocket Lab's new headquarters in Long Beach, California the Materials Lab Technician II is responsible for supporting the development of various Additive Manufacturing and Composite materials development. This role will support all Additive and Composites processes involved with the Neutron vehicle and Archimedes engines. You will support the Manager of Additive Manufacturing and Production Additive Manufacturing organization, with deliverables required for internal leadership, board of directors, and investors.

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:

• Prepares/tests/evaluates/certifies all metallurgical tests required per internal production, customer and/or specification requirements.
• Operate testing equipment such as (but not limited to) Instron tensile frames at cryogenic and elevated temperatures, metallography testing (grind, polish, mount, microscopy), XRF analysis, SEM analysis, and hardness testing.
• Checks test samples for dimensions using precision measuring equipment such as gages, calipers, scales, micrometers.
• Monitors all work to ensure quality standards are maintained and adhered to all specifications and requirements.
• Interfaces with engineering to coordinate testing and test results.
• Maintains lab database with complete lab test results and accuracy.
• Maintains a clean work environment (including assigned storage and cleaning duties) in full compliance with company standards, customer and government regulations.
• Participate and support the internal & external audits and support metallurgical audits
• Ensures the company's commitment to maintain a safe workplace and to protect the environment through the establishment and support of Company policy and adherence to various government regulations.
• Performs other duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
• Program/run lab heat treat oven for test coupons and some production parts.

YOU’LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

• 2+ years of metallurgical lab experience or related functions
• High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
• Demonstrated familiarity with drawings, testing specifications, hand tools, bandsaw, cutoff machine, etc.
• Working knowledge of alloys, e.g., Ni, Cu, and Ti alloys.
• Experience testing carbon composite materials.

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

• Experience with Tensile Testing of Metallic / Composite Material
• Experience with test coupons preparation including cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching
• Experience with Macro and Micro Hardness Testing
• Experience with Optical Microscopy
• Experience with Round Robin Test
• Demonstrated knowledge of quality control, customer and NADCAP requirements.
• Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and verbal/written communication skills.
