Summary

QuEra Computing UK is seeking a talented, impact-motivated theoretical researcher with strong expertise in quantum computing applications. You will be a part of the team aiming to co-design novel quantum simulation applications for QuEra’s neutral-atom hardware. Working individually and as part of a team, you will interact with academic collaborators, clients, business partners, and other users of quantum computing to address fascinating challenges, from the inclusion of near-term error correction approaches in quantum simulation algorithms to the design of new application pipelines, for example in quantum materials simulation, quantum chemistry or nuclear physics.

Qualifications 

• Ph.D. degree in physics, computer science, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience,
• A strong background in quantum computing and/or quantum algorithms, including
  • expertise in quantum simulation applications, preferably in condensed matter physics, quantum materials, nuclear physics and/or quantum chemistry,
  • expertise in using and/or developing numerical simulation techniques of many-body systems and/or quantum circuits, for example using Pauli propagation, Clifford simulation, tensor networks (MPS, DMRG, etc.), exact diagonalisation, sparse matrix methods, density-functional theory, coupled-cluster + extensions, DMFT
  • experience in using quantum circuit programming and compilation, for example using Cirq, Qiskit, Tket, CUDA-Q
• An exceptional publication record in relevant fields,
• Ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams

Preferred Qualifications 

• Knowledge of quantum error correction schemes and quantum simulation in the fault-tolerant era,
• Experience translating theoretical ideas and protocols to quantum computing hardware, and
• Experience working with or knowledge of neutral-atom quantum hardware,
• Experience in software engineering and high-performance computing.

Role Overview  
We are looking for a  Sr. Control System Engineer/Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to integrate and maintain the hardware and software systems that enable QuEra’s quantum controls and software stack. You’ll work closely with software engineers, physicists, hardware and test engineers to install, upgrade, maintain, test and troubleshoot multiple hardware and software control systems for our Quantum Computers. This role is a foundational systems engineering role to ensure the reliability, stability, and operational functionality of both our development and production environments.  

Key Responsibilities  

• Implement, maintain and test software and hardware in a heterogeneous system that controls disparate computer system devices. 

• Define, document, implement and test procedures for QuEra’s Quantum computer operations. 

• Manage science, development and testing infrastructure, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setups, containerized services (K8S), routers, switches, and test systems. 

• Propose, and/or implement automated provisioning, configuration, and orchestration of local and remote compute systems used in controlling and testing, simulations.  

• Collaborate with software and test engineering teams to ensure smooth integration/deployment of DevOps tools with custom hardware and quantum-specific workflows.  

• Maintain artifact repositories, test result dashboards, and infrastructure for tracking regressions and system health.  

• Establish and enforce best practices for access control, system configuration, and lab operations.  

• Support incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis for CI/CD failures or system anomalies. 

• Implement automation for monitoring and alerting for systems and services, integrating logs and metrics from embedded systems, test benches, and orchestration layers. 

• Work with CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, and deploying software and firmware across the quantum control stack. 

Required Qualifications  

• Practical implementation of LAN and WAN technologies on switches and routers (to include but not be limited to VLAN configuration, DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP based services) 

• Practical Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Redhat) and Windows Administration experience, to include but not be limited to network operations and, application installation and debugging 

• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or Go, and familiarity with tools like Docker, Git, and Kubernetes.  

• Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab CI, Jenkins) and infrastructure-as-code platforms (e.g., Ansible, Terraform, or similar).  

• Familiarity with observability tools (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, ELK stack) and logging systems for real-time data monitoring.  

• Hands on experience with rack mount servers 

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.  

• 10+ years of experience in a Network SQA, Systems Engineering, SRE, or infrastructure engineering roles.  

Preferred Qualifications  

• Experience supporting hybrid systems involving embedded devices, custom hardware, or real-time control systems.  

• Knowledge of secure software deployment and Product life cycles.  

• Experience with hardware-in-the-loop pipelines or distributed lab/test automation environments.  

• Exposure to scientific computing, HPC, or quantum software stacks is a plus.  

• Ability to thrive in fast-moving, interdisciplinary R&D teams.

Summary

QuEra Computing, Inc. seeks a creative and collaborative Scientific Software Engineer to help solve the unique software challenges of developing state-of-the-art simulation tools and compilers for QuEra’s neutral-atom quantum computers. You will have the opportunity to work with a vibrant scientific software team and a community of industry and academic collaborators and to help our growing team of diverse experts address fascinating challenges, ranging from classical compiler techniques to modern methods for quantum simulation. You will be building QuEra’s compiler pipeline together with experimental & computational physicists from low-level hardware instructions to high-level programming languages using our internal toolchain. This involves development of new compiler infrastructure and new programming language design and implementation. You will be co-designing compilers with cutting edge neutral-atom hardware and quantum error correction technology. This new direction involves multiple new challenges in both engineering and science.

Responsibilities

• Development and maintain QuEra’s Static Single Assignment intermediate representations-based compiler infrastructure and compiler components at various abstractions used by our hardware engineers and scientists.
• Design novel domain specific languages specific to our hardware as well as Bloqade SDK together with the team.
• Integrate existing simulation tools with the compiler pipeline and cloud service.
• Communicate and collaborate with QuEra scientists and external customers to meet their use case requirements.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Computer Science with focus on quantum computation/architecture/programming language/compiler, or equivalent professional experience.
• Enthusiastic in building software tools for scientists especially physicists.
• Experience with Python semantics, Python type hints, CPython interpreter.
• Experience with at least one of the compiled languages and experienced with their type system, e.g C++, Julia, Rust, Haskell, OCamel, etc.
• Experience with Static Single Assignment intermediate representations-based compiler development.
• Knowledge of the full lifecycle of software development, including version control, code review, testing, CI/CD, logging, profiling, debugging, and documentation.
• Knowledge of quantum computing basics, e.g., common quantum algorithms, quantum information theory basics.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with using LLVM or MLIR for compiler development, or experience with an  existing compiler development
• Programming language design, especially programming language theory
• Quantum program optimization, e.g quantum circuit simplification, scheduling, routing, etc.
• Quantum error correction
• Contribution to existing open-source libraries
• Experience with existing circuit simulation tools, e.g, cirq, qiskit, CUDA Quantum, etc.

The approximate base salary range for this position is $102,400 - $166,400.
