The role
We’re hiring a Head of Design to define how product experiences are built at Opto.
Today, our product does not yet match the ambition of what we’re building. Onboarding is not self-serve, workflows are fragmented, and design is not consistently shaping product decisions. This role exists to change that.
You will own product design as a function and play a central role in shaping the product itself. This is a hands-on leadership role. You will build and lead the team while directly designing critical parts of the product.
You will work alongside product and engineering to define what we build and how we build it, pushing for simplicity, clarity, and high quality across every experience. You will bring design into strategy, not just execution.
We’re looking for someone who thinks in systems, not just screens. Someone who has strong opinions about what good looks like and is willing to push for it. Someone who takes ownership of outcomes, not just deliverables.
What you’ll do
- Personally lead design on our most critical product surfaces, setting the standard for quality and usability.
- Bring a clear point of view on designing AI-native products, including how to build trust, transparency, and effective human-AI interaction.
- Define how product experiences are built at Opto, from onboarding through core workflows, establishing principles for simplicity, clarity, and trust. You live in the app and know your job isn’t over once something ships.
- Work alongside product and engineering to define direction, challenge decisions, and ensure we build coherent, end-to-end experiences.
- Push teams to simplify, cut scope, and focus on what actually drives user value.
- Bring design into strategic decisions early, shaping roadmap, prioritization, and how we approach problems.
- Establish design systems, patterns, and practices that scale across the product and compound over time.
- Lead and grow the design team, setting a high bar for craft, thinking, and execution.

Required Skills
- Strong product sense and high quality bar. You know what good looks like and push teams to reach it.
- Comfort with ambiguity. You create clarity in evolving environments and help teams move forward.
- AI-native mindset. You've incorporated AI deeply into your workflow and have a point of view on how design's role is evolving
Background
- 0-1 product design experience. You've built products or major features from scratch and can articulate what you shipped, what you cut, and why.
- Experience contributing to or reaching product-market fit. You understand how design drives learning, iteration, and adoption.
- B2B product experience, ideally in fintech or data-heavy environments with complex workflows.
- Experience leading designers, or a strong senior IC who has operated at a leadership level and is ready to own a function.

The Role
The Head of Platform & Security is a senior leadership role responsible for the reliability, security, and operational excellence of Opto's technology platform. You will partner with the CTO to define and execute Opto's security strategy while leading a team of four engineers spanning infrastructure, security, DevOps, and internal IT. You will own our enterprise and application security program end-to-end and lead a four-person platform engineering team spanning infrastructure, security, DevOps, and internal IT. You will partner closely with engineering leadership, legal, and executive stakeholders to ensure that Opto's platform meets the highest standards demanded by our clients — wealth managers and financial institutions who entrust us with highly sensitive data.
This is a pivotal leadership role at a critical stage of Opto's growth. You will take ownership of an established security program and drive it forward — hardening policies, processes, and tooling, raising the bar on compliance maturity, and ensuring the platform engineering team delivers the reliability and operational excellence the program demands.
Our tech stack consists of a series of React-based Next.js Typescript applications. Behind that a collection of Aurora-backed Python REST API services are hosted as containerized applications in AWS. We make use of AWS Lambda for asynchronous tasks and we rely on Snowflake for data ingestion and warehousing. Our service deployments are completely automated and execute multiple times daily. Our tech stack continues to evolve, driven by our shared principles of optimizing for modularity, scalability, and team-level service ownership.
Expectations
Security Leadership
- Own Opto's enterprise and platform security posture across all applications, services, business tools, and processes
- Maintain Opto's SOC 2 Type 2 audit reports, ensuring ongoing compliance and readiness for annual assessments
- Own and continuously improve programs for security incident management, vulnerability management, penetration testing, network security, authentication and authorization, system access control, data privacy and governance, encryption and certificate management, and threat detection
- Define and monitor compliance with internal security policies, including MDM, SSO/MFA/RBAC, VPN/zero trust, and data governance
- Partner with Legal to establish a comprehensive security and compliance program, ensuring appropriate processes, documentation, and staffing are in place with no single points of failure
- Promote a culture of security across the organization — ensuring all individuals understand and follow security policies and appreciate why they matter
- Represent Opto's security program externally to customers, prospects, and investors, including responding to security audits and due diligence questionnaires (DDQs)
Engineering Management
- Lead, mentor, and grow a four-person platform engineering team (infrastructure, security, DevOps, internal IT)
- Maintain team roadmap and backlog in cooperation with engineering leadership and product stakeholders
- Keep stakeholders informed of key milestones, risks, reprioritizations, and escalations
- Provide technical direction on platform architecture decisions, tooling choices, and engineering standards
- Own the internal IT function, ensuring employees get the support they need
- Work with engineering leadership and Recruiting to ensure the team is properly resourced
- Contribute directly to technical projects as bandwidth allows (up to 50% of your time)
- Foster a collegial, trust-filled, and high-accountability team environment
Qualifications
- 4-year degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent work experience)
- 5+ years of professional experience in Information Security
- 5+ years in software engineering, SRE, DevOps, or a closely related technical discipline
- Ability to be primarily in-office in either our New York City or San Fransisco offices
- Experience managing compliance with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and/or PCI standards
- Experience building and managing engineering or security teams
- Experience with cloud-native architectures, particularly AWS
- Familiarity with the full software development lifecycle (CI/CD, Git, etc.)
- Strong preference for automation and tooling over manual processes
- Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to execute in a fast-paced startup environment
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills — equally effective with engineers, executives, and enterprise clients

About the Role
You will help us cultivate, identify, target, and close business with prospective customers and strategic partners. You will be a leader in representing Opto to the world and serve as a valued thought partner to our clients and our community. You will nurture and grow relationships with clients, growing their business with Opto and their trust in our software, product, and recommendations. You will shape the Opto story, value proposition, and company development as a key conduit between our unique market position and the demands of those to whom we can add the most value. Opto is client-obsessed and believes there is a better way for most people to access private markets–you will be on the front line of this industry shaping change.
Your day-to-day will include:
- Develop and iterate on go-to-market strategy for initial and subsequent segments of the wealth market
- Drive custom fund adoption, demand for investment products and software solutions and the enhancement of our technology offering and platform
- Manage relationships and business growth with key accounts
- Perform extensive private market research and distill this into client ready viewpoints and answers to client questions
- Represent the value proposition of Opto to prospective customers via outreach, events, media presence, and thought leadership
- Identify market trends and new opportunities for the business
- Partner with our product and engineering teams to capture client insights and drive the development of innovative technology that empowers clients to design and scale their private market solutions

Required Skills
- RIA knowledge and network: Deep knowledge and relationships with RIAs and independent wealth advisors

- Ability to manage ambiguity: Proven track record of managing relationships in complex, dynamic environments and achieving or exceeding ambitious business goals
