National Life Group currently has an opening for a GAAP Reporting Senior Accountant to join a team that is fundamental to the financial reporting and analysis function of the organization. This position is integral to the Company’s external financial reporting function, with primary responsibility for core financial statements including the statement of cash flows, statement of equity, and related disclosures, as well as management and board-level reporting. The role offers significant ownership of complex reporting areas within a dynamic and evolving environment.

The Senior Accountant reports to the Associate Director of Financial Reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare U.S. GAAP financial statements and disclosures, including the statement of cash flows, statement of equity and related footnote disclosures and supporting schedules.
• Own the preparation of GAAP reporting deliverables, including Management Discussion & Analysis, disclosure checklists to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP requirements and board and senior management reporting materials.
• Independently manage components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process including journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and oversight of close calendar deliverables.
• Analyze financial results and communicate insights to management to support informed decision making.
• Identify, evaluate, and leverage emerging technologies, including generative AI and automation solutions such as RPA and workflow tools, to drive measurable improvements in reporting efficiency, control effectiveness, and scalability.
• Analyze and implement business process improvements to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability of the accounting function.
• Evaluate accounting processes for compliance with corporate policies and state and federal regulatory requirements.
• Create, analyze, and communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports ensuring financial information is recorded accurately and completely.
• Collaborate with external auditors to support successful audit outcomes and regulatory compliance.
• Research technical accounting standards and apply guidance to reporting results and disclosures. Assist with drafting accounting policy memoranda.
• Train and mentor junior staff while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Requirements:

• 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting, financial reporting, and/or auditing.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.
• CPA  or CPA candidate preferred but not required.
• Demonstrated ability to adopt and apply emerging technologies, including generative AI and automation tools, to improve reporting efficiency, effectiveness, and control quality.
• Strong experience with US GAAP required, preferably in the financial services industry
• Experience with Statutory reporting and insurance regulatory filings preferred, but not required.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex reporting responsibilities in a deadline driven environment.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required, including proficiency with complex formulas, pivot tables, data analysis tools, and managing large and complex data sets.
• Proven track record of identifying and executing process improvements within accounting or reporting functions.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven ability to anticipate, identify, and resolve financial issues while managing multiple priorities effectively.

Role Summary

National Life Group is seeking a highly motivated Senior Accountant Policy professional to join the corporate finance team. The Senior Accountant with strong insurance accounting knowledge will assess technical transactions, research and interpret accounting guidance and regulatory policy, and engage with leadership on accounting matters. This individual contributor role will work closely with other members of the Controller team and business units within the Company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Research relevant accounting guidance (U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles) to evaluate complex and technical business transactions
• Develop, maintain, and update the company’s accounting policy manual and technical memos
• Draft clear, practical accounting policies based on U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles
• Monitor changes in accounting guidance and regulatory developments (e.g. FASB and NAIC) and assess their impact
• Communicate new and emerging technical accounting policy developments and related regulatory developments to key stakeholders
• Ensure company-wide accounting policies are current and compliant with existing and recently issued accounting standards and regulations
• Serve as a resource to team members and applicable internal/external stakeholders on more complex technical accounting policy and compliance issues for assigned areas of responsibility
• Provides technical accounting support on transactions and strategic initiatives by identifying any accounting issues during the process and developing/integrating technical accounting policies, as needed 

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
• 5+ years of relevant experience in accounting policy, technical accounting, or audit in public accounting 
• CPA with previous public accounting experience strongly preferred
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles, preferably in the life, health, or P&C insurance sector
• Familiarity with NAIC guidance and statutory reporting requirements
• Experience with insurance products, reinsurance arrangements, and investment accounting is a plus
• Excellent research, analytical, and technical writing skills
• Strong communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional teams
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; experience with accounting research tools (e.g. PwC Checkpoint, DART, CCH) preferred
• Demonstrated ability or willingness to adopt and apply emerging technologies, including generative AI and automation tools, to improve reporting efficiency, effectiveness, and control quality.
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work flexible hours as required
