Job Summary

The Director, System Safety leads May Mobility's day-to-day product safety function — driving the L4 safety case, the Driver-Out (DO) gated deployment plan with strategic ride-hail partners, and the Safety Management System (SMS) build-out. Reporting to the VP, Safety & Validation, the role manages a multi-disciplinary team across systems and programs, test execution, and safety risk and process. The Director partners with the VP on external regulatory and partner relationships and is the primary internal owner of the safety roadmap. This role inherits a mature roadmap and bench, and will execute the next 18 months of L4 commercial expansion across the US and Japan.

Essential Responsibilities

• Lead a multi-disciplinary team across systems, test execution, and safety risk and process/SMS
• Drive the Driver-Out (DO) gated deployment plan with strategic ride-hail partners (Lyft, Uber) — internal gating, partner safety onsites, and recommendation packages for go/no-go decisions 
• Own the Safety Case Framework for May's L4 systems, including HARA, FTA, FMEA, and runtime-monitor coverage for the MPDM-based decision-making stack, with ML-aware safety analysis 
• Build out and operationalize the Safety Management System (SMS): incident risk assessment process, risk register automation, recall response plan, safety gating test suite, and the Product Safety Competency Register.
• Define safety architecture — partner with Autonomy, Validation, and Hardware to ensure safety-by-construction across future releases (scalable runtime monitoring, ODD enforcement, Driver-Anomaly response systems).
• Execute on May's L4 Japan compliance plan — partner with the Systems & Japan Programs Manager and the Japan Regulatory Safety Engineer on partner engagement and bilingual regulator response cadences.
• Co-lead strategic partner safety onsites (e.g., Uber Safety Onsite cadence) with the VP, Safety & Validation; own the technical narrative in OEM, ride-hail, and regulator forums.
• Hire and onboard the open safety roles and develop existing leaders in the org.

Skills and Abilities

Success in this role typically requires the following competencies:

• L4 Safety Case Architecture: Owns the safety case end-to-end — including ML-aware analysis (ISO 21448, ISO 8800). Has personally contributed to an L4 safety case, not only reviewed one.
• AI-Native Safety Mindset: Has built safety arguments for learned components (neural-network planners, transformer-based driving stacks, end-to-end models) where the V-model alone is insufficient. Comfortable defining runtime monitors, distributional-shift mitigations, and uncertainty-quantification strategies that anchor a credible safety case for ML-based decision-making.
• Data-Driven Safety: Has used vehicle telemetry, simulation results, or operational metrics to change a safety roadmap, gate a release, or escalate a risk. Partners naturally with data science and ML engineers to define safety KPIs and guard-rails grounded in evidence.
• Driver-Out / Driverless Deployment Execution: Has been a key contributor to the gating, partner-readiness, and regulator steps required to remove the safety driver from a commercial AV deployment. Comfortable owning the technical recommendation behind a go/no-go decision.
• Partner & Regulator Engagement: Co-leads safety conversations with strategic commercial partners (ride-hail, OEM, transit agency) and regulators alongside an executive sponsor — represents technical depth credibly without losing the audience.
• People Leadership: Has managed managers or has managed a team of senior ICs and is ready to step up to manager-of-managers. Track record of hiring under ambiguity and onboarding leaders into existing programs.
• SMS and Safety Process Build-Out: Has contributed to standing up or substantively expanding a Safety Management System — incident investigation, near-miss reporting, risk register operationalization, recall process. Cross-pollination from aviation SMS, rail, or another safety-critical industry is welcome.
• Operational Bias to Closure: Pulls plans through gates. Comfortable in a startup pace where the safety org is being built in parallel with commercial deployment, including across multiple time zones.
• Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate, present and influence credibly and efficiently at all levels of the organization, including executive and C-level.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates most successful in this role typically hold the following qualifications or comparable knowledge or experience:

• 8+ years in product or system safety engineering, with 3+ years on L3+ AV or comparable hard-tech safety programs (aviation, rail, robotics).
• BA/BS degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.
• Direct experience authoring safety case work products (HARA, FTA, FMEA, safety case construction) on a shipping vehicle or equivalent cyber-physical program.
• Hands-on contribution to at least one driverless or driver-out commercial deployment milestone — named on the safety recommendation.
• 3+ years managing engineers, including at least one stint managing a manager OR leading a team of senior ICs and ready to step up to manager-of-managers.
• Experience working with regulators (NHTSA, FMCSA, FTA, state DMVs, MLIT, or international equivalents) — direct or in close partnership with an executive sponsor.
• Working knowledge of ML-driven decision-making safety standards (ISO 21448 SOTIF, ISO 8800) and traditional functional safety (ISO 26262) preferred.
• Experience in Automotive, AV, Aerospace, or another safety-critical regulated industry is highly preferred.
• Proven success working in a start-up or small business where there are minimal resources, nothing comes easy, and things don't always work as planned.
• Strongly preferred: prior experience at an AV or AI-driving company with an end-to-end learned or ML-heavy autonomy stack.
• Preferred: experience contributing to a published safety assurance framework or runtime-monitoring methodology for learned components.
• Familiarity with the safety-cybersecurity intersection (ISO/SAE 21434, NHTSA Cybersecurity Best Practices) is a plus — May's product cyber and safety functions partner closely.
• Ability to undergo a driving record check.
• Preferred: technical credibility — comfortable reading safety-relevant C++ or Python in code review, with hands-on use of data tools (Jupyter, Databricks, Power BI) and AI-assisted analysis within the last 24 months to interrogate operational data themselves.

Essential Responsibilities

SMS Program Ownership

• Own the end-to-end lifecycle of the May Mobility Safety Management System, including the Safety Policy (MM-SMS-POL-001) and all subordinate SMS procedures, work instructions, forms, and records.
• Maintain alignment of the SMS structure with the ICAO Doc 9859 four-pillar framework (Safety Policy & Objectives, Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance, Safety Promotion) and map regulatory obligations from UN ECE R157 and UL 4600 into the SMS document hierarchy.
• Own the SMS document control process: version management, review cycles, approval workflows, and controlled distribution.
• Drive annual SMS reviews and gap analyses; track open findings and corrective actions through to closure.

Safety Performance Monitoring & Measurement

• Establish and maintain the company’s Safety Performance Monitoring & Measurement (SPMM) program, including definition of safety performance indicators (SPIs) and safety performance targets (SPTs) across lagging and leading dimensions.
• Collect, analyze, and report safety performance data on a recurring cadence; surface trends, anomalies, and systemic issues to safety leadership.
• Maintain the Safety Review Board (SRB) reporting package; produce executive-level safety dashboards and periodic safety reports.
• Interface with the Risk Management Lead and Safety Case Lead to ensure SMS performance data informs risk register updates and safety case evidence.

Incident Reporting & Investigation Coordination

• Track the company’s safety occurrence reporting and investigation coordination process; ensure incidents, near-misses, and hazard reports are captured, triaged, and routed to the appropriate functional owner.
• Maintain the occurrence database and ensure investigation closure records are complete and traceable within the SMS.
• Coordinate lessons-learned and after-action review processes; ensure outputs are fed back into SMS procedures and training materials.
• Serve as the SMS point of contact for regulatory occurrence reporting obligations (NHTSA voluntary reporting, state-level AV incident reporting).

SMS Audits & Compliance

• Plan and coordinate internal SMS audits; manage findings, corrective/preventive actions (CAPAs), and closure verification.
• Maintain audit readiness across all SMS documentation; serve as the primary contact for third-party or regulatory SMS assessments.
• Track evolving regulatory requirements (UN ECE WP.29, NHTSA AV guidance, state AV frameworks) and assess their impact on the SMS program; initiate updates as required.

Safety Promotion & Culture

• Champion a non-punitive, just safety culture across engineering, operations, and fleet management teams.
• Design and deliver SMS training programs for new hire onboarding, role-specific SMS competency, and recurrent safety awareness.
• Maintain the safety communication plan; manage internal safety bulletins, lessons-learned dissemination, and safety awareness campaigns.

Cross-Functional Integration

• Partner with the Risk Management Lead and Safety Case Lead to ensure the SMS program provides the governance structure that supports their respective outputs.
• Embed SMS requirements and reporting checkpoints into program milestone gates in coordination with Systems Engineering, Operations, and Program Management.
• Interface with the Director/VP of Safety on SMS maturity roadmap, resource needs, and organizational safety strategy.

You will design, implement, and maintain event detectors that surface safety-relevant and performance-degrading behaviors from field data, then work hand-in-hand with data engineering and simulation teams to operationalize these detectors — accelerating root cause analysis, regression coverage, and resolution cycle time.

Essential Responsibilities

• Support safety risk assessments for complex driving maneuvers to ensure functional safety goals are met, leveraging event detector outputs to quantify exposure and severity in field data.
• Design, implement, and maintain event detectors for vehicle log data — translating observed field behaviors, near-misses, and edge cases into precise, reproducible detection logic.

Job Summary

Senior Integration Test Engineers serve as key stakeholders in the R&D process. This role bridges simulation and on-road testing by validating vehicle system behavior in a controlled lab environment. Senior Integration Test Engineers will focus on both static vehicle-level and HIL testing, replaying real-world drive logs, and documenting system responses. This role is unique in which you will lead testing on HIL bench test setups in addition to static vehicle-level simulated driving. 

As a Senior HIL Test Engineer, you will work closely with software, hardware, and systems engineers to architect the HIL infrastructure, pioneer new automation processes, and mentor the team in validating safety-critical systems in a fast-paced R&D environment.

Essential Responsibilities

• Lead the development and execution of comprehensive HIL test plans, focusing on the integration of autonomous software with autonomous system hardware
• Perform bench-level testing of sensors and compute modules
• Execute static vehicle-level HIL testing by simulating real-world driving scenarios in a controlled environment
• Execute structured test plans covering functional, regression, and fault-injection scenarios

Job Summary

The Senior Product Safety Architect, is responsible for defining and owning the end-to-end safety architecture for our L4 autonomous driving system, translating safety goals and hazard analyses into concrete system-level design decisions. This role requires a strong foundation in functional safety (UL 4600, ISO 26262) combined with working knowledge of AI/ML safety challenges specific to autonomous systems. The incumbent will partner closely with perception, prediction, planning, and control teams to embed safety requirements throughout the development lifecycle, and will bring an architecture mindset to ensure that safety properties are verifiable, traceable, and defensible in our safety case.

Essential Responsibilities

• Define and own the safety architecture for our Driver Out autonomous system, establishing the system decomposition, safety mechanisms, and architectural constraints that instantiate our UL 4600 safety case claims.
• Derive functional safety concepts and technical safety concepts from HARA outputs, and allocate safety requirements to AV system components (perception, prediction, planning, actuation, fallback) with clear architectural rationale per UL 4600 and ISO 26262.
• Own and manage the safety plan according UL4600 and ISO26262 including a schedule to hit the company’s product launches. 
• Identify and address AI/ML-specific safety risks including distributional shift, model uncertainty, and failure mode opacity; define architectural mitigations (e.g., runtime monitors, confidence thresholds, safe fallback behaviors) to maintain safety goals in the presence of learned components.
• Collaborate with the development teams on every aspect of the safety plan through appropriate processes and methods to ensure on-time delivery of mature work products.
• Create, maintain and review safety work products such as HARA, FSC, TSC, FTA, FMEA, SPFM/LFM, PMHF, and DFA; extend these analyses to cover ML component failure modes and ODD boundary conditions specific to L4 autonomous operation.

Job Summary

The Senior Product Safety Engineer II is responsible for defining and implementing functional safety concepts derived from safety goals and safety cases, aligning with standards like UL4600 and ISO 26262. This role works closely with various stakeholders throughout the organization, including product managers, development teams, suppliers, and customers, to achieve safety goals across products. The incumbent will own and manage the safety plan, including the planning and execution of functional safety confirmation measures such as audits and assessments to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

Essential Responsibilities

• Own the development of the safety case  for our Driver Out system.
• Define a functional safety concept from safety goals and safety cases according to UL4600 and ISO 26262.
• Own and manage the safety plan according UL4600 and ISO26262 including a schedule to hit the company’s product launches. 
• Planning and coordinating the safety activities with product managers, development team, suppliers and customers up to the achievement of the safety goals on products.
• Collaborate with the development teams on every aspect of the safety plan through appropriate processes and methods to ensure on-time delivery of mature work products.
• Create, maintain and review safety work products such as HARA, FSC, TSC, FTA, FMEA, SPFM/LFM, PMHF, and DFA.
• Communicate with all required stakeholders to identify and define technical/ system requirements and safety requirements tied to the safety goals.
• Ability to effectively communicate and explain functional safety concepts to non-safety engineers.
• Ensure that functional safety confirmation measures such as audits and assessments are planned and completed.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Job Summary

The Senior Systems Engineer leverages a comprehensive understanding of the company's products and technologies to facilitate cross-functional engineering initiatives. This role will support system design activities, ensure alignment with requirements and collaborate with test and validation teams to establish verification criteria. This role will also have a key focus on projects for Japanese customers, requiring close coordination with May Mobility’s Japan team to understand Japan-specific requirements in support of future autonomous vehicle launches in the region.

Essential Responsibilities

• Leverage a system level understanding of our products and technologies to support cross-functional engineering efforts
• Serve as the primary systems engineering point of contact for projects targeting Japan customers, ensuring effective coordination with the local Japan team.
• Identify, analyze, and translate Japan-specific regulatory, safety, and customer requirements into technical system specifications for fully autonomous vehicles.
• Develop and execute methods for identifying and documenting Japan specific Operational Design Domain (ODD)
• Analyze real-world and simulation results to identify performance trends, uncover potential issues, and provide insights for improvements
• Develop and execute system test and validation plans derived from documented system requirements to ensure product performance and reliability.
• Lead engineering process continuous improvement activities, proposing solutions and gaining buy-in from impacted teams
• Conduct FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and manage the resolution of all identified findings.

Job Summary

The Product Safety team is seeking a technical leader with experience in the full end to end development lifecycle for Autonomous Vehicle. As the technical leader, you will need to stay current on industry best practices and standards and guide the development of May Mobility’s safety strategy considering relevant standard UL. 4600. ISO 21448, ISO 8800. This leader role provides safety guidance to the engineering development teams that are focused on development, and assess their work products.. As a Senior Manager/Lead Engineer, this role is expected to lead a team of Safety Engineers through development, management, and mentorship.

As the Technical Lead, you will be responsible for working with our partners and customers to define safety strategies and targets for autonomous driving systems, understand their challenges and needs, and collaborate on new learning solutions. You will apply your experience with ISO 8800 and ISO 24118 to ensure we develop, deploy and maintain safe autonomous systems in simulation, on closed courses and on public roads.

Essential Responsibilities

• Referencing ISO 8800, ISO 21448 and AV industry best practices, develop the strategy for ensuring safe autonomous system development, deployment and maintenance.
• Set the strategy for how we systematically break down operational design domain components and driving behavior components and how these are validated in aggregate and on a per behavior level.
• Work with software, data science and systems engineering teams to ensure May Mobility safely trains new machine learning models to solve complex problems.
• Set the safety standard for how we prototype, test and deploy new AI solutions.Set the strategy for testing and validation of data sets and develop an assurance plan.
• Work with data science, systems engineering and software teams to set the strategy for how we establish safety launch targets (SPI- Safety Performance index) across vehicle behaviors and in aggregate.
• Create and confirm the detailed functional safety case according UL4600 and ISO26262 including a schedule to hit the company’s product launches
• Own and manage the safety plan and ensure that the schedule and required artifacts are met
• Train and coach the development team through every aspect of the safety plan through appropriate process and methods
• Communicate with all required stakeholders to identify and define technical/ system requirements, safety requirements tied to the safety goals.
• Ensure that functional safety confirmation measures such as audits and assessments are planned and complete.
