Software Engineer Java + Data (PySpark)

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java and Python
- Build and optimize data processing pipelines and APIs for high-performance applications
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable and efficient solutions
- Improve system performance, scalability, and reliability
- Work with large datasets to support search, recommendation, or ML-driven features
- Contribute to architecture decisions and technical design
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
Requirements (Must-have)
- 6+ years of commercial software development experience
- Strong hands-on experience with both Java and Python (primarily PySpark code)
- Experience in designing, developing, and optimizing scalable data processing pipelines and backend APIs for high-performance applications
- Solid understanding of backend development principles and system design
- Experience working with APIs, microservices, and distributed systems
Nice-to-have
- Databricks OR AWS EMR OR Hadoop
- Search technologies experience, such as:
Lexical search (e.g., Solr, Elasticsearch)
Semantic search, vector search, or RAG-based systems
Search relevance tuning and optimization
- Machine Learning experience, especially in:
Recommendation systems
User behavior prediction (e.g., click-through rate prediction, relevance estimation)
Practical ML application in production systems

About the Role
You will join an established ML team working on search and relevance optimization. You will focus on building data pipelines and preparing data that powers ML models in production.
The role combines Java backend development and Python (primarily PySpark) for large-scale data processing.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java and Python
- Build and optimize data pipelines for large-scale data processing (primarily with PySpark)
- Collaborate closely with ML engineers to prepare and transform data for ML models
- Work with large datasets to support search relevance and optimization systems
- Improve system performance, scalability, and reliability
- Contribute to architecture decisions and technical design
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
Requirements (Must-have):
- 6+ years of commercial software development experience
- Strong hands-on experience with both Java and Python (required)
- Solid experience with Spark / PySpark or similar data processing frameworks
- Proven experience building data pipelines and working with large datasets
- Strong understanding of backend development, system design, and distributed systems
- Experience with APIs and microservices
- Good knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and performance optimization
- Ability to work in hours close to the New York timezone (at least 6 hours overlap with NY team)
Nice-to-have (at least one of the following):
- Experience with search and relevance optimization, including:
Elasticsearch / Solr (lexical search)
Semantic search, vector search, or RAG-based systems
Search relevance tuning - Experience supporting ML workflows, such as:
Data preparation or feature engineering
Recommendation systems or user behavior prediction - Experience with Databricks (preferred) or similar environments:
AWS EMR, Hadoop, Spark ecosystem

Responsibilities:
- Be a part of 24x7 engineerign team;
- Configuring, troubleshooting and solving problems
- Monitoring the health of servers, cloud services, and infrastructure
- Analyzing system logs (Linux, Windows, cloud services) to identify root causes of incidents
- Troubleshooting issues related to OS, containers (Docker), networks, and CI/CD services
- Managing users, configuring permissions, and security policies
- Automating routine tasks using scripts (Bash, Python, Perl)
- Deploying, configuring, and maintaining services in a cloud environment
- Administering Jenkins or similar CI/CD tools
- Automating application deployment and testing
- Deploying and maintaining containerized applications in Docker
Technical skills
- 3+ years experience in administration of Linux
- Hands-on experience with cloud providers (AWS or GCP or Azure)
- Base knowledge of CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or similar
- 1+ years of hands-on experience at least in one scripting language (Perl/Python/Go/Bash)
- Understanding basic's of monitoring, different type of monitoring systems and their pluses and minuses. Ability to choose different types of monitoring types according to the situation
- Manage source code with GIT or similar
- Hands-on experience with Docker
- Experience maintaining an infrastructure
- Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and tools
- Writing and reading skills in English.
