We believe life insurance innovation must happen in the context of sound underwriting decisions. The Underwriting Manager will lead a team of internal and external case underwriters,  as well collaborate with engineering, design, data science, actuarial, and marketing as we design new marketing campaigns, product features, and data models to help users have the most delightful experience possible.

• Bring your expertise as an underwriter to cross-functional Ladder work teams.
• Evaluate medical and personal history on life insurance applications up to $8 million face amount.
• Participate in development of the Underwriting team members.
• Collaborate with the Underwriting Audit team to enhance Underwriting Guidelines and clearly communicate audit finding feedback to the Underwriting team.
• Work closely with the Customer Experience and Compliance teams to answer underwriting related questions and share underwriting knowledge.
• Be comfortable both underwriting and applying your knowledge to systems and processes.
• Report to the Head of Underwriting.

Experience Required

• 3-5 years of people leadership experience
• 8+ years of life insurance underwriting experience at a leading carrier or reinsurer.
• Experience in developing underwriting guidelines and programs.
• Demonstrated interest in innovation and better serving end users.
• Experience with accelerated underwriting and third-party evidence providers is a plus.

• Manage 3 UW teams and develop their skill sets in line with our underwriting philosophy and guidelines
• Production UW  (Analyze medical, non-medical, and financial data to accept, modify, or decline risks on applications referred to manual underwriting)
• Auditing UW (both requirements from our carriers - and also small special audits we need to run to improve the product)
• Projects UW (subject matter experts providing input into any changes to our digital instant UW to improve the business while being wise on the risk)
• Maintain relationships and stay on the cutting edge of new third party data offerings. Identify, pilot, and engage new tools to improve underwriting
• Communicate with our insurance partners in concert with Ladder’s business development director who leads the relationship management of our reinsurers and carriers
• Partner with actuary to present mortality slippage each month to Ladder’s mortality team
• Serve as a subject matter expert to engineering and product teams as we build new insurance offerings

• A medallion architect: You have 4+ battle-tested years designing high-volume ETL/ELT pipelines at massive scale. You are an expert at structuring data lakes through Raw/Bronze, Cleansed/Silver, and Curated/Gold layers, and you rely on advanced dbt modeling to ensure pristine data quality.

How You'll Make a Difference

As a senior engineer on the team, you won't just be writing code, you'll be shaping our platform strategy. You will:

• Improve developer velocity across the engineering organization. You'll measure and optimize the inner loop -  how long it takes an engineer to go from code change to confident production deployment. This includes build times, test parallelization, deployment rollout speed, and the tooling engineers interact with every day.
• Shape the architecture of Ladder's production infrastructure. You'll evaluate trade-offs and make high-impact technical decisions — like whether to replace custom monitoring tooling with native cloud provider integrations, or redesign how we rebuild data pipelines when upstream logic changes. You'll be the person who sees the big picture across systems and decides where to invest engineering effort.

• Participate in incident response for infrastructure, run retrospectives, and help drive follow-through on fixes as part of the team.

• Systematically pay down infrastructure tech debt. You'll partner with your team to identify legacy systems that have been superseded by better alternatives and build a roadmap to retire them — migrating from bespoke systems to native integrations, cleaning up remnants of past cloud migrations, and upgrading components that have drifted behind. 
• You'll raise the engineering bar through code reviews, design reviews, and technical guidance -  not through formal management, but through the quality and clarity of your technical work.

Who You Are

• A functional programming expert: You have deep production experience with Clojure or another functional language and are excited to work in a Clojure-and-JVM environment. Prior Clojure experience is a strong plus.
• An expert with CI/CD and Build pipelines: You have battle-tested experience profiling and optimizing CI/CD pipelines for large codebases, possess intricate knowledge of monorepo build tools like Bazel and Buck, and know how to solve issues related to build and test slowness.
• An Infrastructure enthusiast: You have extensive experience with cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes, Terraform, Datomic, BigQuery and cloud platforms like GCP.
• A Systems Thinker: You possess a deep understanding of software design and architecture. You don't just patch bugs; you design elegant systems that prevent entire classes of problems.
• A Self Starter: You thrive in ambiguity. You can take a high-level, messy business problem, define the technical constraints, and drive the solution from ideation to deployment.

Experience Required

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 3+ years in infrastructure/platform roles
• BS, MS in Computer Science or related technical field a strong plus
• Must-have: Kubernetes, GCP (or equivalent cloud), CI/CD pipeline design, Docker, infrastructure-as-code, JVM operational experience, BigQuery, Kafka
• Strong plus: Clojure, Datomic, Datadog or similar observability platform, monorepo build tools (Buck, Bazel)

Ladder is hiring Corporate Counsel who is passionate about commercial contracting (both inbound and outbound), enjoys the thrill of the deal and working towards a common goal, and is a people-person who thrives off of collaborating closely with cross-functional stakeholders to solve problems and appropriately assess risk. The successful candidate is a clear communicator with sound judgment, great people skills, and proven experience effectively providing legal advice and negotiating with sophisticated counterparties in a fast-paced environment.  The ideal candidate will also be eager and curious to support other functions within our lean but mighty legal team,  including assisting our product and engineering teams, privacy, IP, and regulatory matters. Ladder was born in Palo Alto, California. We prefer the Corporate Counsel to be based in the Bay Area.

How You'll Make a Difference

• Support Ladder’s commercial legal function by negotiating contracts (both inbound and outbound) with our commercial partners to accelerate the growth of our business.
• Advise on a broad range of legal issues including product, CX, regulatory, IP, and data privacy and security.
• Support scaling projects that directly impact the growth of the commercial legal function.
• Draft and negotiate commercial agreements, templates, nondisclosure agreements, terms of use, and other key legal documents.
• Collaborate with partnerships, marketing, product, finance and other stakeholders on key initiatives.
• Support and/or manage other legal matters as they arise.

Experience Required

• JD and membership in at least one state bar
• 3+ years of relevant firm and/or in-house legal experience
• Demonstrated sound judgment, negotiation and analytical skills
• Ability to find creative solutions and balance legal risk with business objectives
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
• Experience learning new areas of law
• Team-player who is willing to take on any project that comes up
• Experience interpreting and complying with regulations in a variety of jurisdictions a plus
• Prior experience in or knowledge of insurance regulatory law a plus

The base pay range targeted for this position is $180,000 - $250,000. This role is eligible for equity and benefits as shared above. Base pay is determined by market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
