The Mechanical Designer supports the design and development of complex engine components and assemblies by creating accurate, manufacturable product definitions that meet customer, program, and regulatory requirements. This role collaborates closely with engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to translate technical concepts into detailed 3D models, drawings, and specifications.

Utilizing expertise in CAD modeling, drafting, and product definition, the Mechanical Designer contributes to the execution of design solutions across the product lifecycle. The role emphasizes quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement, while supporting the advancement of additive manufacturing capabilities and ensuring designs meet cost, schedule, and performance objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Work within defined parameters and work plans to meet day-to-day and short-term objectives of moderate complexity and resolve issues through immediate action or short-term planning.
• Utilize engineering and design experience or expertise to solve problems and advance the state of the art of additive manufacturing technology.
• Lead key technical initiatives with engineering ownership, project planning and on time delivery to the customer.
• Create definition of parts, modules, and assemblies in the form of 2D cross sections, 2D drawings, 3D reusable models in a linked model environment, tolerance stack-ups, change in design co- authoring and various other electronic data formats to support analysis, manufacturing, assembly, tooling, quality and inspection within expected cost, quality and schedule.
• Work with engineering and supply chain partners to determine dimensional constraints and geometric tolerances required for proper clearances and fits while maximizing manufacturing producibility
• Ensure all interfaces between components are established and agreed upon by Engineering design teams of mating parts and engine systems
• Save applicable models to the engine assembly then maintain and support updates
• Continuously challenges self and team skills in functional area
• Stay current with industry developments in one’s field of expertise
• Work on government secured program with varying ranges of security clearance

Qualifications include:

• Education, Experience and Certifications
• Associate's degree in a drafting related field from an accredited university or college and 2+ years of experience OR 5+ years’ experience in a product definition or CAD role is required.
• Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing as it is related to individual parts and overall assemblies (ASME Y145).
• Experience with model meshing and analysis.
• Experience in CAD working with Siemens NX/Teamcenter.
• Experience with EOSPRINT, Concept Laser WRX or other equivalent 3D Printing software.

• Familiarity with DMLM printing machines.

The Manager, Electrical Engineering, leads the design, development, and implementation of high- and low-voltage electrical systems. Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical engineering team in the design and development of the KARNO generator systems, ensuring effective integration of mechanical, electromechanical, and control elements.
• Oversee the design and execution of electrical hardware, control modules, and system-level solutions, ensuring a cohesive and integrated development approach.
• Integrate electrical and control modules into final products and collaborate with suppliers to ensure compliance with quality, performance, and safety requirements.
• Define electrical design requirements and technical best practices; ensuring both electrical and control components align with industry standards for hybrid power generation.
• Translate system requirements into system- and sub-system specifications for electrical, mechanical, and control components, supporting seamless integration across industrial and commercial applications.

This Advanced Materials Science Engineer supports the materials backbone of the KARNO Power Module, developing, testing, and qualifying the advanced metallic alloys that keep the system running cleanly and efficiently. You’ll dive into how these materials behave under extreme heat, high loads, and rapid cycling, then turn that insight into practical design guidance, additive manufacturing parameters, and durability improvements that directly influence engine performance. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with the KARNO engineering teams - mechanical, thermal, design, and additive - to evaluate new alloys, validate new processes, and help build Hyliion’s internal additive materials program from the ground up. If you’re energized by pushing high-temperature metals to their limits and shaping how next-generation power hardware is engineered, you’ll have a big impact here.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Material Selection, Qualification & Behavior

• Lead the evaluation and down-selection of high-temperature alloys, stainless steels, ceramics, coatings, and composites for critical KARNO components.
• Define material requirements based on thermal, mechanical, oxidation, and fatigue loads.
• Conduct microstructural and mechanical characterization to confirm performance against lifecycle and durability targets.

Testing, Characterization & Analysis

• Plan and execute material tests including tensile, creep, fatigue, thermal cycling, hardness, and corrosion/oxidation evaluations.
• Use metallography, SEM/EDS, and other microstructural methods to understand material behavior and property changes under operating conditions.
• Support nondestructive evaluation (NDE) approaches when required.

Additive Manufacturing Support

• Assess metal powders, powder behavior, and printability for powder-bed and DED additive systems.
• Work directly with AM engineers to connect material properties with parameter development, heat-treatment cycles, and post-processing requirements.
• Verify that process changes, maintain material integrity and meet downstream performance demands.

Failure Analysis & Quality Control

• Investigate component or material failures using microstructural analysis, fracture mechanics, and material degradation models.
• Translate findings into improved designs, tighter process controls, or updated material specifications.

Research, Development & Process Improvement

• Drive R&D efforts for next-generation materials suitable for high-efficiency distributed power generation.
• Collaborate with design, thermal, combustion, and mechanical teams to create data-driven material strategies.
• Improve welding, joining, heat-treat, and fabrication practices to increase durability and manufacturability.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Documentation

• Prepare clear technical reports, specifications, and test summaries.
• Work with suppliers, powder vendors, and external labs to qualify materials and coatings.
• Ensure all material documentation aligns with ASTM, ASME, and internal engineering standards.
