At Headway, we’re building the largest national network of therapists who accept insurance — and making mental healthcare radically more accessible in the process. Our ability to serve patients starts with providers. As Staff Researcher for Provider Growth, you’ll lead research to inform the product vision, strategy, and execution for how we attract, onboard, and activate providers on Headway.
In this role, you will be a strategic partner, utilizing a mixed-methods approach to uncover critical insights about our Providers. You will conduct research to inform business, product, and marketing strategies, helping us identify and unlock significant growth and differentiated product opportunities. You’ll be responsible for foundational insights and developing a nuanced understanding of diverse provider segments—practice starters vs. veterans, therapists vs. prescribers, solo vs. group practices—each with different needs, painpoints, and behaviors. You’ll share insights and make recommendations about when to personalize and when to unify, helping the team build solutions that flex to serve unique segment needs while maintaining a coherent, unified Headway experience. You'll operate with high autonomy and ownership, presenting regularly to executive leadership including our CEO and making bold recommendations backed by clear, evidence-driven rationale.

Whether it's building a world-class referrals engine, optimizing conversion through onboarding, or laying the groundwork for future market expansion, this role is at the heart of Headway’s growth story — and critical to advancing our mission. The expected base pay range for this position is $212,000 - $265,000, based on a variety of factors including qualifications, experience, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for an equity grant, depending on the position and level.

This role sits at the intersection of patients, providers, and insurance, designing the billing and payment experiences that make Headway's financial engine feel simple, transparent, and trustworthy.
This is a complex, high-stakes design challenge. A single appointment at Headway touches insurance verification, claims processing, provider payouts, and patient billing — all with different timelines, edge cases, and failure modes. Today, confusion around billing is one of the top drivers of support tickets and a key factor in provider trust.
We’re building an AI first design team at Headway. Designers are expected to use AI tools like Claude, Cursor, and MagicPatterns to prototype and stay involved through launch and iteration directly in code. We’re looking for designers who’re already working this way and see AI as a primary part of their workflow.

Group practices are one of Headway's biggest growth levers — and one of its most complex design challenges. Unlike solo providers, group practices operate through owners, admins, supervisors, and supervisees, each with different permissions, workflows, and goals. A single group practice might onboard dozens of providers simultaneously, manage supervisory billing relationships across multiple states, and need practice-level reporting that doesn't exist today.
This is also a massive business opportunity. Supervisory billing — enabling provisionally licensed therapists to bill insurance through Headway — represents a ~250K new provider TAM and over $100M in annual revenue potential. It's the #2 reason we lose group practice sales (after rates), and we're just getting started: we launched in-product onboarding in Q1 and are expanding state-by-state throughout 2026.
As a Staff Product Designer for Group Practices, you'll be the design anchor for the only segment-based pod at Headway. You won't just own a surface — you'll own a customer. That means designing across the full lifecycle: from how group practices discover and join Headway, to how they onboard and activate supervisees, to how they manage packaging tiers and track practice performance. You'll think like a business builder — understanding the revenue model, making sharp prioritization calls, and designing product experiences that directly drive growth.

Every provider who joins Headway starts with onboarding — a multi-step credentialing process that collects licenses, CAQH data, NPI verification, payer enrollment, and more. Today, only ~20% of qualified providers make it from interest to their first appointment. That gap represents over $100M in unrealized annual revenue and, more importantly, tens of thousands of patients who can't access the care they need.
We're not looking to optimize the existing form. We're looking to replace it.
