Position Summary 

As a Staff Cloud Engineer at Harness, you will play a pivotal role in designing, building, and maintaining our cloud infrastructure. You will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our systems, incorporating a blend of Cloud Engineering and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices. This role requires a strong technical background, a passion for innovation, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities 

Cloud Infrastructure, Distributed Systems & Platform Engineering:

• Design, build, and manage scalable, secure, and reliable cloud infrastructure using GCP, AWS or Azure.
• Develop infrastructure-as-code using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar.
• Lead the design and evolution of scalable, secure, multi-tenant, multi-region cloud platforms across AWS, GCP, and Azure.
• Architect and build control planes, orchestration systems, and shared platform services used across teams.
• Design and operate highly available, fault-tolerant, and self-healing distributed systems at scale.
• Define and enforce SLO-driven architectures, reliability standards, and resilience strategies.
• Drive infrastructure-as-code and platform abstractions to standardize and simplify deployments.
• Own capacity planning, scalability strategy, and performance optimization.

Observability & Operational Excellence

• Establish and scale monitoring, logging, and alerting frameworks for proactive issue detection.
• Lead incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous reliability improvements.
• Drive system-wide performance, scalability trade-offs, and efficiency optimizations.

Site Reliability Engineering (SRE):

• Implement SRE practices to ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of cloud services.
• Develop and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to detect and address issues proactively.
• Perform capacity planning and demand forecasting to ensure system scalability and performance.

Automation & CI/CD:

• Architect and scale Kubernetes-based platforms and deployment systems (Helm, orchestration).
• Design and implement CI/CD pipelines and platform-level automation frameworks.
• Enable reliable, repeatable, and efficient delivery of applications and infrastructure.
  

Security & Compliance:

• Define and enforce security best practices and compliance standards across infrastructure and platforms.
• Lead security reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Leadership & Collaboration :

• Provide technical leadership across teams, driving architecture consistency and long-term strategy.
• Mentor engineers and elevate engineering standards, best practices, and design rigor.
• Partner with product and engineering stakeholders to align platform strategy with business goals.

 About You

 Technical Expertise:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of experience in cloud engineering, site reliability engineering, or related roles.
• Strong experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and cloud-native services.
• Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform), Helm package manager and configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
• Experience with AI-OPS.

SRE Practices:

• Experience with SRE principles, including error budgets, SLIs, SLOs, and incident management.
• Strong knowledge of monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, GCM).

Automation & DevOps:

• Expertise in building and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, CircleCI or Harness.
• Strong coding skills (Python, Go, etc.) and familiarity with version control systems (Git).

Security & Compliance:

• Understanding of security best practices for cloud infrastructure and applications.
• Experience with compliance frameworks (ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS) is a plus.

Soft Skills:

• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a proactive and innovative approach.

What You Will Have at Harness

• You will design and implement scalable authentication and authorization systems using modern patterns and distributed architecture principles
• You will build high-performance microservices for identity federation, token validation, and permission evaluation that support high-volume API traffic
• You will drive the architecture for enterprise integrations including SAML, OIDC, SCIM, and LDAP to support diverse customer environments
• You will collaborate closely with Principal Engineers to standardize authentication middleware and API gateway patterns across the platform
• You will solve complex distributed systems challenges related to database optimization, query performance, and data consistency at scale
• You will work with SRE teams to define SLIs/SLOs and ensure operational excellence of critical security infrastructure
• You will contribute to API design and rate-limiting strategies that provide secure, efficient access to organizational resources

• Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field
• Experience: 8+ years of backend engineering experience with a strong focus on building production identity or authorization systems
• Core Technologies: Expert-level proficiency in Java or Golang with a focus on concurrency, memory management, and distributed systems design
• Security Expertise: Deep understanding of standard authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML) and/or access control models (RBAC/ReBAC)
• API Development: Experience with gRPC, RESTful APIs, and designing secure API architectures with proper access controls
• Distributed Systems: Strong knowledge of microservices patterns, service mesh (e.g., Istio), and data consistency challenges
• Database Technologies: Experience with relational (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases, including schema design for performance
• Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience with cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience operating P0 services with strict latency requirements (<100ms) and high throughput (10k+ ops/sec)
• Exposure to Google Zanzibar derivatives (e.g., Authzed SpiceDB) or OPA (Open Policy Agent)
• Familiarity with Identity Provider internals (Keycloak, Auth0, Okta) and federation complexity

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $181,000.00 - $226,000.00 annually. Salary is determined by a combination of factors including location, level, relevant experience, and skills. We’re seeking an AI Product Marketing Manager to craft the Harness AI narrative across the platform, transforming fast-moving capabilities into a clear, consistent point of view that resonates with the market and our own teams.

Unlike a typical PMM role that owns a point product end-to-end, this role is cross-cutting and platform-oriented: you’ll define how Harness shows up as an AI-forward company for software delivery, then enable other PMMs to stay aligned and on-message as they launch features across the portfolio. You’ll work closely with product, engineering, corporate marketing, sales enablement, and company leadership to translate technical innovation into stories that travel.

This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives in ambiguity, can move seamlessly between deep technical conversations and executive-ready updates, and can create world-class thought leadership by interviewing the right people and writing exceptionally well

Strategy & Narrative Leadership

• Own and evolve the Harness AI platform narrative: messaging pillars, proof points, and “why now” framing for how AI changes software delivery.
• Partner with Product and Engineering to translate platform capabilities into crisp market stories and launch strategies.
• Work with peer PMMs to AI advances in individual products as part of a larger narrative.
• Bring market and customer insights back into roadmap and positioning discussions to sharpen differentiation and prioritization.

Launches & Platform Enablement

• Lead GTM for key AI platform launches (such as updates to our knowledge graph), from positioning to launch assets to internal enablement.
• Create and maintain launch assets: solution briefs, presentations, blogs, campaign copy, videos, demos, and executive-ready narratives.
• Enable field teams with clear talk tracks and materials that help them win, and stay consistent, even as the story evolves.

Thought Leadership & Evangelism

• Produce high-quality thought leadership by interviewing engineering, product leaders, and executives, then crafting content that feels both visionary and credible.
• Own the “where we show up to talk AI” strategy: identify which conferences/events matter, propose topics, and recommend the right Harness speakers for each audience.
• Partner with corporate marketing to pitch and place AI narratives across channels (events, webinars, campaigns, executives, and customer stories).

Insights & Competitive Intelligence

• Track AI market trends and competitive narratives and translate them into actionable guidance for PMMs and the field.
• Use funnel, pipeline, and call analysis insights to identify where our AI story is resonating or not, and adjust messaging, enablement, and content accordingly.

• 7+ years in product marketing or a relevant technical/strategic role (product management, solutions engineering, architecture, etc.).
• Strong foundation in the software delivery lifecycle and the realities of building, shipping, and operating software.
• Exceptional writer and storyteller: you can turn complex systems into crisp narratives without losing technical truth.
• Comfortable in ambiguity; able to create structure and momentum when the “right answer” isn’t obvious.
• Credible with technical audiences (engineers, architects) and effective with executives (clear, concise, outcomes-oriented communication).
• Highly collaborative: you enjoy aligning many stakeholders around a single story and helping others execute it.

Bonus Points

• Experience marketing AI-driven platform capabilities (data/knowledge graphs, intelligence layers, analytics, automation) to technical buyers.
• Prior conference programming / speaker strategy experience, or close partnership with executive communications.
• Ability to make an AI capability feel tangible via a simple demo narrative or clear “before/after” customer story.

The anticipated base salary range for this position is between $190,000 and $205,000 annually. Salary is determined by a combination of factors including location, level, relevant experience, and skills. • A desire to build products that solve complex technical problems for end users
• 7-11 years experience developing highly scalable, distributed applications, products and services in Java and Golang
• Designing/developing REST, GRPC and GraphQL APIs
• Working knowledge of SQL and No-SQL database technologies
• Solid foundation in data structures, algorithms and software design with strong analytical and debugging skills
• Experience in SAAS platform development with scale
