Job Summary
The System Software group comprises of the Firmware team, the Drivers and Utilities team and, the System QA team. We are responsible for the enablement of all silicon and hardware platforms produced by our colleagues at Graphcore. Our aim is to produce high quality software and APIs that enable the wider software team to utilise our products efficiently and effectively. The Firmware and Drivers teams form the foundation of the Graphcore software stack, upon which all our customer-facing systems are built and run.
The Team
The Drivers and Utilities team develop kernel and user space software to allow our customers to get maximum performance and utility from our unique hardware. We work closely with the software engineering team developing our Poplar SDK to support machine learning applications and with silicon and hardware engineers to fully exploit the capabilities of our Graphcore IPU solution.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Write code to Graphcore standards
- Ensure all code written has the appropriate unit tests created for it
- Participate in code reviews individually and as part of the team
- Participate in Scrum ceremonies
- Manually test code written by self and others
- Maintain our Continuous Integration system and fix when broken
- Contribute to and take part in technical design discussions with team members
Candidate Profile
Essential
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Maths, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related field.
- Previous experience with low-level software including embedded or device drivers. This could be a personal or university project
- Basic understanding of electronics including the ability to read and understand schematics and datasheets
- Introductory experience with any of the following languages: C, C++, Python
- Awareness of Continuous Integration systems such as Jenkins
- Experience using Git for managing source code, raising and reviewing Pull Requests, merging branches
Desirable
- Previously experience with hardware, perhaps with PCI cards or PC motherboards
- Has contributed to open-source projects
- Has designed and built own hardware and controlled it from a host (e.g. Linux-based system)
- Has an interest in how hardware and software platforms interact

Job Summary
As a System Software Engineer in Test, You will be responsible for design, development, execution and reporting of test and test harness to verify and validate firmware.
You will be involved with the development team from the early phases to the final production software and ensure maximum coverage of functionality.
You will be working with different Hardware configurations and required to collaborate closely with Hardware, bring up and drivers teams to ensure our firmware plugs in seamlessly.
As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior members and raise the testing standards of the team.
The Team
Firmware QA team validates the low-level software responsible for the complete boot, configuration, and monitoring of Graphcore silicon and hardware platforms. Test areas include:
- Boot and power sequencing
- Low-level hardware interfaces and drivers
- Telemetry, monitoring and SMBus/BMC data exposure
- Silicon and system bring-up
Responsibilities and Duties
- Design, Implement and deliver high quality tests for complex firmware features
- Support in debug and MTBF reduction of both internal and external incoming issues
- QA Ownership of Key features within the firmware
- Contribute to the continuous integration pipeline
- Support release test and release pipeline maintenance
- Active involvement in technical discussions and reviews for the team.
Candidate Profile
Essential:
- Proven Firmware test experience
- Experience working on real time embedded systems
- Hardware testing knowledge
- Experience with testing low level drivers and interfaces.
- Strong Proficiency in: C and Python.
- Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, good work ethics, high sense of teamwork, love to produce quality work and commitment to finish your tasks every single day. You are a self-starter who loves to find creative solutions to challenging problems.
Desirable
- Experience with server architecture or datacentre hardware
- Knowledge of server security concepts
- Experience in Platform security and openBMC.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Firmware Manager, the Graduate Firmware Engineer will contribute to the design, development and delivery of the firmware that powers our next generation products. They are expected to take part in technical discussions across multiple teams within Graphcore and our partners.
The Team
The firmware team writes the software that ensures the full and complete bootup of Graphcore Hardware and Silicon. We design and maintain interfaces to allow our Drivers software to interact with Graphcore Silicon. We present telemetry and monitoring data for use by the host system via the SMBus interface, and by data centre operatives via the BMC.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Support the design, development and delivery of firmware code to the expected Graphcore standards
- Participate in technical design discussions within the Firmware team, other teams within Graphcore and our partners
- Participate in code reviews individually and as part of the team
- Participate in Agile ceremonies and actively improve Agile best practices within the team
- Contribute to and take part in in-depth technical design discussions with team members, bringing new ideas and innovative techniques to the team where possible
- Support engineers within the team and other teams to investigate and resolve firmware-related problems with our products
Candidate Profile
Essential:
- Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Maths, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related field
- Understanding of Continuous Integration, build systems and software packaging best practices
- Introductory experience with C or Python

- Experience of designing and implementing real-time embedded software, and subsequent verification
- Proven ability to understand, build and debug complex embedded platforms
- A good understanding of server architecture and performance in a datacentre environment
- Experience of device drivers and OS Kernel development

Job Summary
Reporting to the Firmware Manager and working as a member of the Firmware Team, the Senior Staff Firmware Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and delivery of complex firmware systems across Graphcore’s next-generation hardware platforms.
This role requires significant technical breadth and deep embedded systems expertise. You will contribute to shaping the firmware architecture and design, guide engineering practices, and solve highly challenging problems while maintaining a strong hands-on focus. You will partner closely with hardware, drivers, silicon and platform teams to deliver robust, scalable, production-quality firmware.

- Provide technical leadership and act as a subject-matter expert for complex firmware features, subsystems, and architecture decisions
- Lead design and development of scalable, maintainable firmware solutions in C, contributing to long-term architecture and system strategy
- Own and deliver critical low-level functionality (e.g., boot flows, embedded real-time logic, platform security, silicon bring-up)
- Perform advanced system debugging using low-level tools (e.g., JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analysers) and drive root-cause analysis for complex issues
- Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware, silicon, platform, and external partners to define requirements and resolve integration challenges
- Ensure high standards of quality, reliability, and security through code reviews, validation improvements, CI/CD, and automated testing
- Mentor engineers and elevate team performance by promoting best practices, improving development processes, and driving continuous engineering excellence
Candidate Profile
Essential:
- Proven industry experience in embedded/firmware engineering using C/C++
- Expertise in designing and delivering real-time embedded systems and complex boot logic
- Strong understanding of modern silicon and hardware interfaces (I2C, I3C, SMBus, SPI, PCIe, DDR, power management, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement complex technical initiatives
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a track record of resolving complex, cross-layer issues
- Ability to define and communicate architectural direction at subsystem or multi-subsystem scale
- Strong communication skills and the ability to document large system designs clearly
- Experience with CI/CD systems, build tools, and modern software engineering practices
Desirable
- Experience with server architectures or datacentre hardware
- Understanding of server/platform security concepts and their application to firmware
- Experience working directly with silicon vendors or hardware partners
- Knowledge of OS kernel, secure firmware flows, or trusted execution environments
- Experience with device driver development
