Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) is where new and bold products are built and released within Cloudflare. Rather than being constrained by the structures which make Cloudflare a massively successful business, we are able to leverage them to deliver entirely new tools and products to our customers. Cloudflare’s edge and network make it possible to solve problems at massive scale and efficiency which would be impossible for almost any other organization.

About the Team

The Workers KV team delivers Cloudflare's global, low-latency, key-value data storage. KV lets developers store and retrieve data globally. With Workers KV, you can build dynamic and performant APIs and websites that support high read volumes with low latency.

KV is integrated with Cloudflare Workers but can also be used via our REST API. Here are a few example use-cases:

Caching API responses
Storing user configurations and preferences
Storing user authentication details

The team is geographically distributed across Western Europe.

What you'll do

We are looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to join our team. You will work with a team of passionate, talented engineers that are building innovative products that bring security and speed to millions of internet users each day. You will play an active part in shaping product features and improving performance to make Workers KV the best it can be. You will make sure our company hits our ambitious goals from an engineering standpoint. You will change the way people build applications.

You bring a passion for meeting business needs by building technical, innovative solutions. You excel to understand how big-picture goals inform technical details. You thrive in a fast-paced iterative engineering environment and have experience in delivering scalable distributed systems. Most importantly, you have a track record of having past teams respect you as both a technical leader and manager.

Examples of desirable skills, knowledge and experience

Strong communications skills - especially building a shared understanding of systems among a team's members.
Comfortable leading and hiring a team that builds distributed systems.
Navigate uncertainty and ambiguity - many of the things we build have never been built before anywhere and you are expected to find a way to deliver.
Excel at planning, creating teams, and overseeing execution to meet commitments and deliver with predictability
Comfortable building developer-loved APIs that scale
Demonstrate a track record of leading a team including hiring, on-boarding, and professional development. You inspire your team to reach higher. You’re as good as explaining “why” as you are “how”.
Experience implementing tools, process, internal instrumentation, methodologies and resolving blockages
At least 4 years of recent professional experience with TypeScript or Go.
Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented or functional design.
Deep understanding of the web and technologies such as web browsers, HTTP, JavaScript and WebAssembly

Bonus Points

Experience building high performance distributed systems
Experience delivering and operating critical infrastructure for cloud platforms, especially serverless platforms
Deep Linux/UNIX systems, kernel, or networking knowledge
Contributions to large open source projects
Experience working with distributed storage and cache architectures
Experience debugging, optimizing and identifying failure modes in a large-scale Linux-based distributed system

About the Department

About the Team

ETI’s Storage Infrastructure team is responsible for the core storage layer that underpins many of ETI's stateful services. Our scope ranges from managing the physical hardware to operating the distributed databases and storage systems built upon it. We run this infrastructure globally across Cloudflare's network, which presents unique and complex engineering puzzles. We navigate efficiently expanding storage capacity, optimizing rebuild operations, and coordinating operations across failure domains to uphold durability. While other service teams focus on product development, our mission is to ensure the underlying storage is reliable, performant, and scalable.

You’ll be joining a highly motivated team that is building the next generation of distributed storage services.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will help build and operate the next generation of globally distributed storage systems. You will own your code from inception to release, delivering solutions at all layers of the stack. On any given day, you might write a design document for a new provisioning system, model failure domain dependencies across edge locations, benchmark new storage hardware, build standardized observability and runbooks for distributed database clusters, or automate operational toil through purpose-built tooling and intelligent automation. You can expect to interact with a variety of languages and technologies including Rust, Go, Saltstack, and Terraform.

Examples of desirable skills, knowledge, and experience

Strong programming skills with languages like Rust, Go, or Python
A solid understanding of distributed systems concepts such as consistency, consensus, data replication, fault tolerance, and partition tolerance
Experience with distributed databases and storage systems
Experience with infrastructure configuration tooling and infrastructure as code
Familiarity with storage fundamentals: block devices, filesystems, SSD characteristics
Experience building and maintaining high-throughput, low-latency systems
Understanding of network fundamentals as they relate to distributed storage -- bandwidth constraints, latency tradeoffs, cross-datacenter replication
Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to explain technical decisions clearly
Comfortable operating in fast-paced environments with tight deadlines and evolving priorities
