About the Role
Applied is seeking a Software Engineer with strong foundations in algorithmic optimization and multi-agent systems. You’ll tackle complex computational challenges in our real-time decision-making platform, designing and implementing advanced algorithms that push the boundaries of autonomous coordination and planning. We seek motivated engineers driven by core mission values to join our Acuity Autonomous Behaviors and Agents engineering team focused on next-generation human-machine teaming and real-time decision-making systems. You’ll help build intelligent agents that plan and execute missions using advanced reasoning, planning, and optimization algorithms. Our work spans real-time scenarios, heterogeneous platforms (air, space, land, surface, sub-surface), and software that integrates seamlessly with human operators. At Applied, you will:
- Design and implement multi-agent optimization algorithms for distributed decision-making and coordination problems
- Develop temporal logic frameworks and constraint-satisfaction algorithms for complex planning scenarios
- Create mathematical models for sequential decision process under uncertainty with probabilistic outcomes
- Build computational frameworks that balance algorithmic efficiency with human-interpretable reasoning
- Implement and evaluate quantitative metrics for algorithm performance, solution quality, and computational efficiency
- Translate theoretical approaches into production-ready software implementations with rigorous testing methodologies
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to refine algorithmic approaches based on empirical evaluation
- Communicate technical details effectively across stakeholders, sponsors, and leadership
We’re looking for someone who has:
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field, OR 5+ years of professional experience developing intelligent agents or planning systems.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience developing performant modern C++ (we use C++ 20).
- Strong theoretical understanding and practical experience implementing algorithms for constraint satisfaction, scheduling, and optimization problems.
- Demonstrable skill in analyzing, visualizing, and optimizing algorithm performance and solution quality.
- Proficiency with Bazel in Docker-based Linux environments.
- Strong procedural and object-oriented programming experience that employs clean code principles and good OOP design patterns/principles.
- Experience developing in Docker and containerized development environments, and using Linux-based operating systems (e.g., RHEL, Ubuntu).
- Understanding of Service-oriented Architecture and message broker vs data broker paradigms.
- Experience using git, Visual Studio Code, GitLab, SonarQube, and Artifactory or Azure Container registry.
- Ability to translate complex mathematical concepts into clear technical documentation and communicate complex software designs.
- Strong critical thinking skills, methodical approach to algorithm development and validation, and ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills with demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple teams.
- Passion for solving complex problems with little supervision in a fast-moving team.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, frequently changing, and sometimes ambiguous environment.

About the role

We're seeking a Senior Software Engineer to architect our Acuity Scene System. This role is built at the intersection of game engine technology and large-scale simulation, requiring you to define the foundational 4D abstractions and Entity Component Systems that enable realistic, high-performance representation of multi-agent environments across air, ground, and maritime domains.
At Applied Intuition, you will:
- Architect Scene & Entity Systems: Design and implement core high-performance architectures, including Entity Component System frameworks, spatial indexing, and 4D object management for large-scale multi-agent simulations.
- Lead Technical Strategy & Integration: Drive architectural decisions and design seamless APIs that enable cross-domain integration for air, ground, and maritime autonomy stacks.
- Collaborate & Mentor: Act as a strong, social collaborator who proactively engages with other teams about technology. You must be willing to take on essential integration work for the Scene libraries while providing technical leadership and mentorship across the organization.

We're looking for someone who has:
- 5 - 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated expertise in complex systems
- Expert-level C++ programming skills with deep knowledge of modern C++ (C++20 or later), including template metaprogramming, move semantics, and performance optimization
- Proven experience with Entity Component System architectures or similar data-oriented design patterns
- Strong background in 3D/4D spatial systems, including coordinate transformations, spatial data structures, and geometric algorithms
- Deep understanding of software architecture and design patterns, particularly for high-performance, real-time systems
- Strong proficiency in Python and shell scripting for tooling and automation
- Experience with agentic coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) and AI-assisted development workflows

About the role
Applied Intuition's DroneStack team builds autonomous software and hardware that enables swarms of unmanned aircraft to find, fix, track, target, and engage in contested and denied environments. Our technology — from the Acuity ISR+Strike autonomy stack to the Axle edge compute hardware — is deployed on real platforms with real operators, across multiple airframe vendors and mission sets.
The team has proven the technology through successful field demonstrations and live deployments. Now the challenge shifts: we need to move from delivering bespoke solutions for individual programs to building products that scale across customers, platforms, and theaters. That's where you come in.We're hiring a Product Manager to own strategy, research, and execution for DroneStack. You won't need to arrive as a drone or defense expert — what matters is that you're a fast, rigorous learner who can immerse yourself in a complex technical domain and emerge with clarity about what to build and why. You'll conduct primary research with military operators in the US and abroad, translate what you learn into product strategy, and work with a strong engineering team to ship products that give warfighters a decisive edge.
At Applied Intuition, you will:
- Own product strategy for DroneStack. Define the roadmap that transitions the team from program-driven deliveries to a scalable, multi-customer product line. Make hard prioritization calls across ISR, strike, hardware, and tooling.
- Become the voice of the operator. Conduct primary user research — in the field, at bases, and with international partners — to deeply understand how operators plan, execute, and debrief autonomous missions. Travel up to 20% of the time, including internationally.
- Drive the programs-to-products transition. Identify the patterns across current customer engagements and define the abstractions, configurations, and interfaces that turn one-off solutions into repeatable products.
- Shape product design and experience. Work with engineering to design operator interfaces (mission control, mission planning, mission review) that are intuitive enough for non-technical users to operate without engineering support in the field.
- Set the technical direction with engineering. Partner with the engineering manager and technical leads to balance near-term delivery commitments with long-term product architecture. You don't need to write the code, but you need to understand the system well enough to make informed tradeoffs.
- Build and communicate a market thesis. Develop a point of view on where the autonomous drone market is heading — across DoD service branches, allied nations, and commercial applications — and position Applied Intuition to capture it.
- Represent the product internally and externally. Be the connective tissue between DroneStack engineering, Applied Intuition's defense business development team, and customers. Present at demos, program reviews, and industry events.
We're looking for someone who has:
- 5–7 years of product management experience across at least two meaningfully different environments (different industries, product types, company stages, or customer segments). We value breadth and adaptability over narrow specialization.
- A track record of shipping products, not just features. You've owned a product end-to-end — from research and strategy through design, build, launch, and iteration. You've made the hard calls about what not to build.
- Exceptional research instincts. You know how to learn a market from scratch: talking to users, studying workflows, reading doctrine, attending field exercises, and synthesizing what you find into actionable product direction. You've done this at least once in a domain that was new to you.
- Comfort with deep technical systems. You don't need a background in autonomy, robotics, or aerospace — but you should have experience working on technically complex products (hardware + software, real-time systems, developer tools, infrastructure, etc.) and be energized by learning how things work at a systems level.
- Strong design sensibility. You care about how products feel to use, not just what they do. You've collaborated closely with designers or driven UX decisions yourself, particularly for workflow-heavy or operations-focused tools.
- Clear, structured communication. You can write a crisp product brief, present a strategy to senior leadership, and run a productive design review with engineers. You tailor your communication to the audience — whether that's a general officer or a software engineer.
- BS/BA degree in a technical or analytical field (Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, or similar). Advanced degrees are welcome but not required.
Nice to have:
- Experience with defense or government customers, even outside of autonomy (understanding of acquisition cycles, program structures, or operational environments)
- Experience working on products that span hardware and software
- Prior work at an early-stage or high-growth company where you wore multiple hats
- Exposure to international markets or customers
- Experience founding a company or leading a 0-to-1 product initiative

About the role
Applied Intuition is rapidly scaling its defense product ecosystem in Ann Arbor! We're looking for talented backend C++ engineers at all levels, who are ready to work on some of the hardest autonomy challenges in physical AI today.
You'll be a core contributor to Axion and Acuity, our flagship defense products, building the foundational systems that power multi-domain autonomous operations. This is not a maintenance role. You'll architect, implement, and own backend infrastructure that runs at the edge of what's technically possible, in environments where the stakes are real.
The A2 team sits at the intersection of Applied's commercial technology velocity and defense-grade requirements, giving you access to a rapidly evolving product suite and real world impact. You'll work in small, high-ownership teams where your code ships, your decisions matter, and your impact on national security is direct.

- Design and implement high-performance backend systems in C++ for Axion and Acuity, Applied's core defense autonomy products

- 4+ years of experience shipping complex software
- Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and can quickly become comfortable with new technical tools
- Designed efficient and effective solutions to a wide range of engineering challenges
- Proven ability to take initiative in a fast-paced environment
- US citizenship and eligibility for security clearance.
Nice to have:
- Working knowledge of frontend, API layer, containerization, or cluster orchestration frameworks (such as React, GraphQL, Docker, or Kubernetes)
- Experience working with simulation tools, modeling physical problems, or using robotics middlewares (such as ROS)

About the role
As an AcuityOS engineer, you’ll develop, deploy, and maintain the backbone of all-domain autonomy capabilities, from inter-agent communications to hardware and simulation interfaces. Integration with new vehicles and hardware is a critical function. This position requires both field and office-based work, with significant time spent deploying and testing software on autonomous vehicles in real-world environments.
At Applied Intuition, you will:
- Systems Engineering: Develop, deploy, and validate software systems on autonomous vehicles, focusing on robotics, sensors, and vehicle autopilots
- Field Deployment & Testing: Participate in hands-on fieldwork, deploying software on vehicles and ensuring proper functionality in dynamic, real-world environments
- Interfacing with Sensors and Autopilots: Work directly with sensors (e.g., RADAR, cameras, GPS, SONAR) and vehicle autopilot systems, integrating them into the autonomous vehicle framework
- Perception & Autonomous Modules: Work with the Perception and Autonomy teams to deploy and optimize perception pipelines (Vision, Radar, Fusion) and vehicle autonomy SW, ensuring robust and safe vehicle operation
- Communication Systems: Address inter-vehicle communication, ensuring seamless data exchange between vehicles for collaborative autonomous operations
- Third-Party Software Integration: Interface with and integrate third-party software and APIs into our systems
- Software Quality & CI/CD: Work on software integration, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) processes, and implement system-related improvements to enhance system performance and reliability
- Simulation & Testing: Leverage simulation environments to test vehicle systems, validating software behavior in various scenarios before field deployment
- Collaboration & Documentation: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, data scientists, and field operators, to ensure the successful deployment of systems. Document processes and provide updates on system status and improvements
We’re looking for someone who has:
- MS or PhD in Robotic Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Optimization, or equivalent OR 5 years of relevant experience designing multi-agent autonomy
- Strong proficiency in Linux and command-line tools
- Strong proficiency in Python and/or C++ (most work is in C++)
- Hands-on experience with robotic systems, sensors (such as RADAR, cameras, radar), and vehicle autopilots (e.g., PX4, ROS)
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab, or similar tools for automating deployments and testing
- Knowledge of communication protocols for inter-vehicle communications (e.g., DDS, UDP, ROS2, etc.)
- Experience in integrating third-party software and APIs
Travel Requirements:
- Must be willing to travel as projects requires; average travel varies, but can be up to once a month for up to 1 week (~25%)
Security Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance

- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to document processes and communicate technical concepts to cross-disciplinary teams

Compensation at Applied Intuition for eligible roles includes base salary, equity, and benefits. Base salary is a single component of the total compensation package, which may also include equity in the form of options and/or restricted stock units, comprehensive health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance coverage, 401k retirement benefits with employer match, learning and wellness stipends, and paid time off. Note that benefits are subject to change and may vary based on jurisdiction of employment.
Applied Intuition pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum intended target base salary for new hire salaries for the position. The actual base salary offered to a successful candidate will additionally be influenced by a variety of factors including experience, credentials & certifications, educational attainment, skill level requirements, interview performance, and the level and scope of the position.
