Project Manager - Traffic Engineering
Benesch’s Civil and Traffic team delivers impactful transportation solutions that improve mobility, safety, and community connectivity. Our team partners with state DOTs, municipalities, and private clients to design and deliver roadway and traffic projects that shape how people move every day.
As a Traffic Project Manager, you will lead the delivery of roadway and traffic projects from concept through construction. You will manage teams, drive project execution, and play a key role in growing client relationships and expanding our presence in the region. This is a leadership role with real ownership, where your voice, decisions, and expertise directly influence outcomes.
Location
This position is based in Glastonbury, CT, with the option to sit in Boston, MA, and follows a hybrid schedule with regular in office collaboration alongside your team and leadership.
The Impact You Will Have
- Lead traffic and roadway projects, owning scope, schedule, and budget
- Develop and execute project work plans from kickoff through delivery
- Manage and mentor project teams, supporting growth and development of junior staff
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, including local and state agencies such as ConnDOT and MassDOT
- Coordinate across disciplines to deliver high quality, compliant designs
- Support business development efforts, including identifying opportunities and contributing to pursuits
- Represent Benesch at industry events and help strengthen our presence in the market
What We Are Looking For
- B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (CT or MA preferred, or ability to obtain within one year)
- 8+ years of progressive experience in traffic and roadway design
- Strong experience with DOT standards (ConnDOT, MassDOT, or similar) and public agency coordination
- Proven ability to manage projects, budgets, and schedules successfully
- Proficiency with CADD and experience delivering complete, review-ready plan sets
- Strong communication and client relationship skills
- Ability to work independently, lead teams, and drive projects forward #LI-MM1

Traffic Project Manager
We have an exciting career opportunity for a Traffic Project Manager with our Civil, Traffic team. In this role you will work on various transportation projects with state and local transportation agencies. As a traffic project engineer, you will perform engineering analysis and supporting calculations / documentation relating to traffic safety and operations. You will also coordinate the drafting of project deliverables for various clients. The ideal candidate has experience with traffic and safety experience and comprehensive knowledge of local and MassDOT standards.
Location
This position will have a hybrid work schedule and, when in the office, will work from our Boston, MA office.
The Impact You Will Have
- Create and execute project work plans
- Manage project analysis and deliverables
- Work in a collaborative environment, with team members, senior staff, and external clients
- Interacting with clients, agencies, and other project stakeholders, including the DOT
- Represent Benesch at industry and professional engagement events
What We Are Looking For
- A minimum of 10 years of diverse and progressive civil transportation and traffic engineering experience
- Licensed PE in the state of MA or planning to obtain licensure within one year
- PTOE License preferred
- B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
- Experience working with public agencies and/or municipalities. MassDOT experience is preferred
- Progressive experience with developing plans analysis and reports per DOT standards and requirements
- Excellent communication and client relation skills
- Strong organization skills with a track record for adhering to design budgets and schedules
- Advanced use of project-specific software such as CADD, Synchro, HCS, SIDRA, Vissum, etc.
- Ability to work independently and develop task deliverables in a complete and reviewable manner
- Willingness to work at client sites, as needed, as an extension of client staff

Transportation Project Manager (Phase I) - Chicago, IL
Join our Chicago team as a highly motivated Project Manager. In this role, you will lead and manage preliminary engineering and environmental studies (Phase I), primarily in northeastern Illinois. As a Project Manager managing Phase I projects and planning studies, you will mentor junior associates, handle day-to-day client relations, and spearhead the development of innovative solutions for complex projects on behalf of public agencies. Additionally, you will contribute to strategic initiatives to drive growth within the planning and preliminary engineering group.
The Impact You Will Have:
- Participate in Business Development and Marketing, including networking, preparation of SOQs, proposals, and contracts.
- Research local/state regulations as they pertain to projects.
- Making presentations before elected officials and advisory boards, attending conferences, and participating in interviews.
- Prepare technical analysis within a variety of specialist areas such as corridor studies, interchange design and alternative analysis, multimodal planning and design, and feasibility studies, among others.
- Responsible for project management, including cost control, project budget control, and quality assurance/quality control.
- Direct and manage the budgeting and execution of projects including the supervision of assigned staff and subcontractors.
What You Will Need:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related field.
- Licensed P.E. in Illinois; certification as a PTOE, AICP, or other specialty certification is a plus.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in planning or designing highways, local roads, arterials, collectors, and complete street multimodal facilities. Demonstrated expertise in transportation facility alternative analysis and design.
- Proficient in leading Phase I or planning projects for transportation improvements, including preliminary engineering and environmental documentation activities.
- Interface with clients and possess experience in public involvement and stakeholder coordination.
- Skilled in team management and mentoring, fee proposal generation, scope of service writing, RFP/RFQ interviews, and QA/QC management.
- Experience in preparing documentation in compliance with NEPA requirements (Categorical Exclusion or Environmental Assessment). Experience with PELs or Environmental Impact Statements is also advantageous.
- Familiarity with traffic and safety assessments. Knowledge of GIS and experience with multimodal planning and mobility studies is a bonus!

Central Illinois Branch Manager
We are searching for a dedicated individual to serve as our Central Illinois Branch Manager to lead and grow Benesch’s Transportation practice in that region. The ideal candidate will bring enthusiasm and energy to open a new office, build a new team, and maintain and develop client relationships in the region. This position will report to the Division Manager and offers outstanding leadership opportunities with great visibility at the state, regional, and national levels, including the potential for ownership at Benesch.
Work areas to be managed by this position include roadway and bridge design, traffic engineering, hydraulics, construction management, and transportation planning. A Professional Engineering license or AICP certification is preferred but not required as the ideal candidate will also have proven experience in business and client development and the pursuit, management, and delivery of roadway and transportation projects and services for public agencies, including Illinois DOT, counties, and municipalities.
Areas of Responsibility Include:
- Lead, manage, and grow our practice in central Illinois.
- Contribute to local, regional, and corporate strategic growth initiatives, including expansion of a multi-disciplinary transportation practice.
- Develop and manage relationships with existing and new clients.
- Represent Benesch in industry and at professional organizations and events.
- Identify opportunities and lead strategic project pursuits.
- Draw upon existing industry relationships and establish new ones to develop strategic partnerships for future pursuits.
- Demonstrate a proven record of effectively directing multiple concurrent projects and pursuits.
- Review and verify scopes of work, budgets, and schedules.
- Actively recruit, interview, and hire individuals who can contribute to the transportation practice in central Illinois and company-wide at a high level.
What We Are Looking For
- Hold a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Planning, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of industry experience preferred.
- Professional Engineer license in the State of Illinois or AICP certification preferred.
- Have a strong background working with the Illinois DOT, preferably in Districts four through 9 (experience with local agency clients is a plus).
- Be located in central Illinois, preferably metro areas of Peoria, Bloomington, or Springfield and ready and able to participate in meetings and industry events.
- Ability to write and prepare effective and efficient project proposals and non-technical documents.
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of state and local design standards, ensuring compliance and innovation.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, captivating audiences with your ideas and insights.
- Strong organization, and leadership skills with a track record for understanding and adhering to contractual requirements.
- Proven history of adhering to design budgets and schedules, delivering on time and within scope.
- Leverage your skills in accounting and scheduling to manage projects.
- Thrive in a collaborative team environment, fostering synergy and driving collective success.
