Some engineers go deep on the server and never look up. Others gravitate to the client and lose interest the moment something touches a database. The engineers we're looking for do both — and they're more curious about the seam between the two than they are about either side alone.

This position is on the Customer Experience (CX) team — a full-stack group embedded at the core of Alarm.com's mobile and web apps. CX owns the moments that matter most to customers: getting them up and running on the platform, giving them the tools to manage their accounts, and finding ways to make the overall experience smarter and more intuitive over time.

As a Software Engineer II, you'll own features end-to-end. That means designing the server-side logic, shaping the API contract, and then following the work into the client surfaces where users experience it — Android, iOS, or web. You won't be handed a spec and told to execute — you'll be expected to have opinions about how things should be built and to defend them.

If you're coming in strong on the backend and looking to deepen your client-side skills on one platform, this role is built for exactly that trajectory.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and implement server-side services and APIs that power features across Alarm.com's product ecosystem
• Own features completely: scoping, implementation, testing, deployment, and production verification
• Write clean, well-structured code that other engineers can read and maintain without explanation from you
• Design for the full problem — edge cases, failure modes, and error conditions, not just the happy path
• Contribute to client development on either Android, iOS, or web — you'll focus primarily on one platform, with exposure to others over time
• Participate in code reviews that meaningfully raise quality, not just catch style issues
• Collaborate across teams to define solutions that meet both business and technical needs
• Engage with the full development lifecycle, from early requirements through post-ship monitoring and support
• Bring your perspective to product decisions — we want engineers who think about what we're building, not just how
• Use AI tools where they genuinely improve your work — and share what's working with the team; we value engineers who are thoughtful adopters, not reflexive ones

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field, or equivalent work experience
• 2+ years of professional software development experience
• Strong object-oriented programming fundamentals: C# or Java experience is a plus
• Solid experience with SQL databases — schema design, query optimization, index strategy, and reading query execution plans
• Comfort with the full development lifecycle: writing tests, deploying safely, monitoring production health, and responding when things go wrong
• Curiosity about how the full stack works — genuine interest in following a feature from the server through to the client that delivers it

DevOps Engineer

The DevOps Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and lifecycle management of automation and integration solutions across Alarm.com’s cloud infrastructure and application platforms. This individual will lead the implementation and operation of continuous integration, automated deployment, and infrastructure-as-code solutions that support the delivery of Alarm.com’s life safety and home automation applications.

This role works closely with Software Engineering, Quality Engineering, Cloud Operations, Security, and Release Management teams to onboard and support applications throughout the full software development lifecycle. The position combines hands-on engineering with operational responsibility to ensure the availability, performance, scalability, and reliability of Alarm.com’s cloud platforms and applications.

Responsibilities

The Engineer's primary job responsibilities include:

• Design and develop tools and frameworks that enable continuous integration and automated infrastructure management across all layers of the cloud stack, including servers, storage, networking, operating systems, management infrastructure, applications, monitoring, and alerting.
• Implement and maintain infrastructure-as-code solutions using technologies such as Ansible, AWX, Puppet, and Terraform to support scalable and repeatable infrastructure deployments.
• Provide technical guidance to engineering teams on best practices for deploying and operating software within the Alarm.com cloud environment.
• Develop a deep understanding of the architecture and operational characteristics of the Alarm.com cloud platform and implement solutions that improve system reliability, performance, and predictability.
• Evaluate, architect, and implement infrastructure solutions and migrate on-premises workloads to hyperscaler environments including AWS and Azure.
• Troubleshoot infrastructure and application issues across development, staging, and production environments.
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident response to maintain the stability and performance of production services.
• Collaborate with Cloud Engineering, Software Engineering, and Quality Engineering teams to improve operational efficiency and system observability.
• Develop and maintain operational runbooks, monitoring standards, and alert metrics to support platform health and stability.
• Support application deployments and improvements across the full software development lifecycle.
• Enable automation and operational improvements using scripting languages and modern DevOps tooling.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.
• Minimum 3 years of DevOps or cloud infrastructure engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience with cloud and virtualization technologies including VMware, AWS, and Azure.
• Experience with configuration management and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Ansible, AWX, Puppet, and Terraform.
• Working knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems in enterprise environments.
• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker, Kubernetes (K8s), Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), and Rancher.
• Familiarity with server monitoring and application performance monitoring solutions such as PagerDuty, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, New Relic, Dynatrace, and AppDynamics.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling including GitHub Actions, Octopus Deploy, Atlassian tools, Git, and ArgoCD.
• Familiarity with secrets and artifact management technologies including Vault and Artifactory.
• Experience with scripting or programming languages such as Bash, Python, Go, C#, and PowerShell.
• Experience supporting operational processes including multi-tiered escalation and on-call procedures.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a self-directed approach to investigating and resolving technical issues.

Staff Software Engineer

Most engineers optimize for the feature in front of them. We're scaling Alarm.com's customer experience platform through a significant architectural transition, and we need someone who has done this kind of work before — who knows how legacy systems accrue complexity, how to carve the right seams, and how to bring a team along for the journey without breaking what's already in production.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll define how the team builds — not just what it ships. That means setting the architectural patterns the team builds against, driving the decomposition of complex monolithic systems into maintainable services, and making sure the quality bar doesn't slip as the pace picks up. You'll also be a mentor and technical anchor: the engineer that others bring their hardest problems to, and trust to give them a straight answer.

This is a hands-on role. You'll still write code, lead design sessions, and stay close to production. The difference is that your decisions ripple outward — they shape how the whole team works.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Define the architectural patterns and technical standards for the CX team - your decisions become the baseline that others build against
• Lead the decomposition of monolithic systems into well-scoped, independently deployable services, with a clear migration strategy that keeps production stable throughout
• Design systems that absorb change - architectures that remain sound as requirements evolve and scale increases, not just ones that work on day one
• Drive high-leverage technical decisions: data modeling, API contracts, service boundaries, event-driven patterns, and infrastructure choices
• Identify architectural drift and technical debt before they threaten delivery, and build the case for addressing them
• Set and maintain standards for testing, observability, and deployment across the team's systems
• Conduct code and design reviews that raise the team's technical floor - teaching through feedback, not just approving or rejecting
• Collaborate with engineering managers and product managers to sequence technical investment alongside product priorities
• Stay close to the work: write production code, prototype solutions, and maintain enough hands-on involvement to lead with credibility
• Model effective use of AI tools across the team - identifying where they provide real leverage and helping the team build good instincts for when and how to apply them

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field, or equivalent work experience
• 7+ years of professional software development experience, with a demonstrated progression into technical leadership
• Deep, hands-on experience in systems design and backend architecture — you can show specific examples of systems you've designed, the tradeoffs you made, and how those decisions held up over time
• Experience designing and operating high-scale, high-availability services — systems where latency, throughput, and reliability SLAs are real constraints, not theoretical ones
• Meaningful experience with distributed systems: service decomposition, inter-service communication, data consistency, and failure isolation
• Strong object-oriented programming skills; C# or Java experience is a plus
• Deep SQL expertise — schema design for scale, query optimization, index strategy, and understanding how database bottlenecks surface at the application level
• Proven ability to lead technical direction in a collaborative environment — you know how to build alignment on architectural decisions, not just make them

Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

• Designing, implementing, and testing new software features.
• Innovating and improving existing solutions.
• Analyzing functional requirements and product specifications to deliver high-quality software.

• Taking ownership of projects to ensure their successful completion within deadlines.

Requirements

• 0+ years of experience in software development (internship or academic project experience preferred).

• Experience with object-oriented programming (C# preferred).
• Familiarity with web development frameworks (Ember.js, Angular, or React is a plus).
• Understanding of databases and SQL.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new technologies.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Passion for technology and security solutions.
