ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Technical Program Manager, Engagement Platform(s) in the Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. 

The ACLU Technology Department is a broad umbrella covering both the ACLU’s Analytics and its Product & Engineering teams, two robust and innovative divisions that power the work of the ACLU. The department provides trusted, dependable, and impactful analytics, engineering, as well as product management and product design expertise for the ACLU. In partnership with experts across the ACLU, the technology team delivers best-in-class solutions, services, and innovation that advance the ACLU mission and organizational priorities. The tech team strives to ensure the ACLU leads by example in the ethical use of technology by ensuring privacy and security standards are maintained, directional insights are used to inform programming and business strategy, best-in-class products are designed to get the ACLU message out into the world and grow the ACLU supporter base, as well as to help steward high standards for algorithmic fairness, accountability, and transparency. 

The Product & Engineering division includes engineers, product managers, product designers, and project operations experts who build and maintain engaging digital products and secure technical systems that accelerate the ACLU’s mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties. 

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Senior Technical Programs Manager, the Technical Program Manager, Engagement Platform(s) will supervise a platform that supports hundreds of donation, advocacy and other forms administered by staff across 54 affiliates and the national office. The Technical Program Manager will maximize the efficacy with which the ACLU uses this platform by assessing existing protocols and developing and executing new ones to improve the user experience for staff administrators and ensure consistency with functional, visual, and privacy standards.  In your work you will collaborate with colleagues in the Technology Department, work with stakeholders across the organization, and oversee service delivery and custom development by a software vendor. 

The Technical Program Manager will also assist with data mapping and other aspects of an underway CRM migration, and engage in related projects and duties. 

The ideal candidate is a highly skilled software administrator who is experienced with enterprise level nonprofit engagement platforms including Springboard from Jackson River. 

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Oversee a queue of projects and tasks undertaken by our vendor’s staff 
• Partner with the Technical Support Administrator to provide platform support and troubleshooting; serve as backup for teammates as necessary; coordinate with other teams on more advanced support such as development of new product features 
• Carry out quality assurance testing of system-wide software releases, custom features, and bug fixes 
• Report on system upgrades by reviewing vendor’s release notes, editing and rewriting notes as necessary to ensure they are comprehensive and clear, and disseminating release notes and highlights to platform users 
• Assess existing tools for monitoring system performance and data integrity; collaborate with vendor and colleagues to implement improvements 
• Own and manage engagement platform trainings and onboarding programs for org-wide users 
• Create and update form templates following design and technical guidelines; work with stakeholders to customize forms for special uses, ensuring that data privacy and hygiene protocols are maintained 
• Conduct periodic form reviews and create reports on usage and trends for Tech Department leadership, product development colleagues, and key stakeholders  
• On occasion, gather requirements and work with product, engineering and design colleagues to create specifications for new features and reports 
• Have or develop expertise in the engagement platform’s functions, configuration, data model and integration mechanisms

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• Experience administering an enterprise engagement platform such as Springboard, EveryAction, Blackbaud digital engagement tools, and others; experience with Springboard a plus 
• Capacity to function in a data- and engineering-oriented environment, i.e. you can communicate effectively with CRM administrators and product development teams, accurately describe technical issues and collaborate on their solutions, support the execution of six-month and annual Tech Department roadmaps 
• Experience with data integration between an engagement platform and a CRM or other large-scale institutional database; experience with Blackbaud CRM a plus  
• Ability to write clear, concise materials including incident reports, release notes, training guides, feature requirements, and work requests 
• Strong communication skills overall including as a presenter, meeting leader, and video trainer  
• Track record of success managing projects and task backlogs   
• Proficiency in using collaboration and tracking tools like Slack/Teams, Asana, Zendesk, Monday.com 
• Knowledge of best practices in quality assurance testing 
• Experience and skill responding to user support issues 
• Flexibility about making decisions in collaboration with others, ability to make independent decisions when appropriate 
• Knowledge of basic web skills such as HTML and CSS 
• Some familiarity with web accessibility standards

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Software Engineer II (CRM) will be responsible for supporting ACLU’s implementation of Blackbaud CRM, collaborating with other engineers, designers, product roles and end users to support the development, deployment, and maintenance of our cloud-based application. This role plays a critical role in ensuring that our system is scalable, secure, and efficient. 

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in enterprise CRM software development cloud environments and automation and is eager to deepen their skills in engagement system customizations and contribute to the success of our mission-driven organization.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Provide Blackbaud CRM technical integration and customization, configuration, and maintenance. 
• Assist in the build and deployment of individual CRM related functions and products that impact constituent data within and across CRM ecosystem. 
• Own specific features or components and implement within established patterns. 
• Assist in code migrations in development environments. 
• Continually work with fundraising team to facilitate changes and improvements they may need. 
• Follow team established best practices and policies relating to software development code reviews.   
• Work with teams to understand business objectives and refine complex feature requirements. Propose solutions and make implementation decisions that are appropriate to the scope and complexity of the problem and consider long-term resourcing and technical maturity objectives. 
• Ensure compliance with privacy and security regulations and ACLU board policies that protect consumer data through processes and tooling 
• Ensure documentation, functional and technical specifications are accurate, clear, and consistently updated, with attention to tailoring communication so that both technical and non-technical stakeholders can easily understand and apply the information

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• Demonstrated professional experience developing software for full-stack enterprise systems in a production environment 
• Experience customizing and extending large-scale fundraising CRMs or other enterprise-level constituent data systems 
• Experience with source control using platforms like Azure Repos, Git, or similar and CI/CD experience   
• Experience developing against MS SQL Server (writing performant queries, functions, stored procedures) 
• Experience debugging software solutions for performance and reliability 
• Experience working with and integrating data of varying formats and quality, including third-party API integrations 
• Experience debugging software solutions for performance and reliability 
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills 
• Familiarity with .Net, C#  
• Familiarity with JavaScript frameworks 
• Familiarity with SQL, CSV/JSON processing and ETL, spiky workloads and large volumes of data 
• Understanding of RESTful APIs and integration patterns  
• Understanding of data warehouse design principles (e.g., star schema, dimensional modeling) 
• Knowledge of Blackbaud’s Software Development Kit (SDK) or prior experience developing with Blackbaud products preferred 
• Knowledge around customizing within fundraising CRMs preferred

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Head of Product, the Product Manager will lead discovery, early validation and evaluation efforts to identify, assess, and guide adoption of emerging and existing technologies needed for high-impact, mission-critical initiatives. 

This role is designed for an experienced product professional who thrives in ambiguous problem spaces, excels at facilitating alignment across non-technical stakeholders, and can translate complex organizational needs into clear, validated problem statements and opportunity briefs. Unlike traditional product management roles, this position does not lead software delivery with a dedicated engineering or design. Instead, the Product Manager will focus on early-stage discovery, working closely with leadership from various departments – such as tech , privacy, information security and counsel, to translate emergent business needs across legal, advocacy, fundraising, and operational teams within the ACLU into actionable workplans, governance frameworks. The Product manager will assess needs, explore solution options, and inform what comes next — whether that is to define a vendor procurement process, scope an internal build, define success criteria, and support strategic decision-making on when not to pursue a technology solution. The role will also provide tight coordination and documentation support for the organization's Gen AI Governance Steering Committee and will be critical in ensuring traceability of decisions and communications emanating from the committee.   

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Lead Deep Product Discovery for Priority Workstreams 
  • Partner with Tech Leadership and Directors across Privacy, InfoSec, Counsel, Legal Operations, Operations/HR, and high-touch Fundraising to explore complex problem spaces  
  • Conduct structured discovery through interviews, listening tours, workshops, and stakeholder sessions 
  • Clarify underlying needs, constraints, risks, and success criteria 
  • Lead a small number of deeper, longer discovery tracks rather than many lightweight efforts 
• Facilitate Alignment Without Formal Authority 
  • Design and lead collaborative workshops to align stakeholders on problem definitions, priorities, and options 
  • Navigate competing perspectives and organizational constraints with diplomacy and clarity 
  • Build shared understanding across technical and non-technical teams 
  • Support decision-making through evidence, facilitation, and structured framing 
  • Staff and provide coordination support for the organization's Gen AI governance steering committee documenting decisions made in committee, as well as tracking of action items to ensure team alignment   
• Produce Clear, Actionable Discovery Outputs 
  • Assess and prioritize build vs buy solution adoption opportunities by balancing innovation with privacy, security and legal compliance constraints. 
  • Develop validated problem statements, opportunity briefs, and solution assessments 
  • Document findings in ways that are accessible to both technical and non-technical audiences 
  • Provide recommendations for next steps, such as initiating a vendor RFP, handing off scoped opportunities to internal product teams, or managing solution pilots.  
• Support Strategic Experimentation & AI Prototyping 
  • Occasionally propose or support low-risk experiments or pilots 
  • Help explore and shape internal AI tooling concepts for operational, legal, or fundraising use cases 
• Contribute to Tech Team Planning and Learning 
  • Influence the broader Tech Team strategy by sharing insights from discovery work to inform Tech Team roadmaps and prioritization 
  • Contribute to building a stronger, more intentional discovery practice within Tech 
  • Develop business cases, strategies for pilots, monitoring and evaluation frameworks for new tech tools

• Experience producing structured discovery outputs such as problem statements, opportunity briefs, solution assessments, and other alignment materials  
• Able to distill technical and non-technical inputs into clear documentation, including governance artifacts, memos, exec summaries 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
