The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel in the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Center for Liberty of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY or Washington, D.C. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to applications received by May 22, 2026.
This is a 2-year term-limited term position.
The ACLU’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg Center for Liberty encompasses the ACLU’s legal work on reproductive freedom, LGBTQ rights and HIV, women’s rights, freedom of religion and belief, and disability rights. It also encompasses the legal work of the ACLU to address the intersection of religious freedom and equal treatment, among other issues.
This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).
Reporting to the Deputy Legal Director/ Director of the Center for Liberty, the Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel will work closely with the Director on advancing the Center’s programming. The work will include a focus on combatting efforts to use religion to discriminate; developing the ACLU’s veterans’ rights docket; addressing the many emerging challenges to free exercise and Establishment Clause doctrine; advancing the family regulation docket; and supporting the work on priorities in the center.
The ACLU has a litigator scale that determines pay for attorneys in our Legal Department. The range of salaries are the following, based on year of law school graduation (please consult the hiring manager for specific salary details, based on individual circumstances)

The ACLU seeks applicants for the Karpatkin Fellowship, a full-time, two-year fellowship in the Racial Justice Program (RJP) of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
The Racial Justice Program (RJP) is part of the ACLU’s Trone Center for Justice and Equality. The Trone Center works to combat racial discrimination; to ensure that our criminal justice system is fair, and free of racial bias; to advocate for humane and constitutional conditions of confinement; and to abolish the death penalty as a legitimate form of punishment. The Trone Center for Justice and Equality also includes the Criminal Law Reform Project, Capital Punishment Project, and the National Prison Project.
Often working with the ACLU’s 53 affiliates and chapters nationwide, RJP uses litigation, legislative advocacy and public education to challenge government and private sector attacks on educational, public health, housing, and employment equity initiatives. We also challenge a range of discriminatory criminal legal system practices that unfairly disadvantage communities of color, and work to ensure robust civil rights enforcement in the use of new technologies, including artificial intelligence.
During the fellowship, fellows have opportunities to work with colleagues within RJP and across the ACLU’s 53 affiliates and chapters in every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. They will receive mentorship from ACLU staff attorneys, attend specialized trainings focused on improving substantive legal skills and strategic decision-making for legal work, and collaborate with others across the legal department through internal community building convenings. Past fellows have gone on to play important roles in civil rights and civil liberties work at the ACLU, in other leading social justice organizations, in the judiciary, in academia and in government.
The Karpatkin Fellowship was established by the ACLU Board of Directors in memory of Marvin M. Karpatkin, the late General Counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union, who died in January 1975, at the age of 48. Mr. Karpatkin was one of the ACLU's most active attorneys during the 1960s and early 1970s. He left his special mark in the areas of selective service and military law. His interest in those areas grew out of his own strong opposition to the Vietnam War and his desire to help those who, younger than himself, were faced with performing military service in a war they would not support.
Reporting to the Deputy Project Director, the Karpatkin Fellow will be a core member of a collaborative, dedicated team working to advance the ACLU’s racial justice work.

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney or Senior Counsel in the National Prison Project of the ACLU’s National office in Washington, D.C. or San Francisco, CA. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
The National Prison Project works to ensure that conditions in prisons, jails, juvenile detention centers, and immigration detention facilities comply with the Constitution, domestic law, and international human rights principles. The Project has successfully litigated on behalf of incarcerated people in more than 25 states, and is the only organization litigating conditions of confinement cases nationwide. Our priorities include reducing overcrowding, improving health care, eliminating violence and maltreatment, and increasing oversight and accountability in prisons, jails, and other places of detention. We also work to reverse the policies that have given the United States the highest incarceration rate in the world and led to extreme over-representation of people of color in the incarcerated population.
This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).
Reporting to the Deputy Project Director, the Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney or Senior Counsel will contribute to all aspects of the Project’s litigation and non-litigation work, with a special focus on the Project’s immigration detention work.

Established in 1965, VRP has worked to protect the gains in political participation won by voters of color since passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA). Since its inception, the Voting Rights Project has litigated hundreds of voting rights cases, and has aggressively and successfully challenged efforts to suppress voting or to dilute minority voting strength.
The Project’s mission is to build and defend an accessible, inclusive, and equitable democracy free from racial discrimination. The Project has three principles: (1) all Americans should be eligible to vote; (2) voting should be free and easy; and (3) all people should count equally.
The Project employs an integrated advocacy approach, combining legislative advocacy, public education, and litigation, and has active cases in over a dozen states. Its recent docket has included:

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Paralegal in the Legal Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
The Immigrants’ Rights Project is a national project of the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation with offices in New York and California. Using targeted impact litigation, advocacy and public outreach, the Project carries on the ACLU’s historic commitment to protecting the civil rights and civil liberties of immigrants. In state and federal trial and appellate courts, including the Supreme Court, the Project conducts the nation’s largest impact litigation program dedicated to defending and expanding the rights of immigrants, enforcing the guarantees of the Constitution, and achieving equal justice under the law. It works with the English and non-English language media, immigrant advocacy organizations, and ACLU affiliates around the country to empower immigrant communities through presentations about their rights and about current and proposed immigration laws.
Reporting to the Deputy Director or Project Director, the Paralegal will be responsible for providing litigation and administrative support to the Immigrants' Rights Project. This includes, but is not limited to, preparing litigation documents for filing, responding to legal assistance inquires, and maintaining files and records.
