About this role
Ably is a product-led growth business. Our platform provides developers with the infrastructure to build, extend, and deliver powerful realtime experiences, and our self-service segment is a critical part of that PLG motion. We believe that great developer experience; smooth onboarding, excellent documentation, and the right touchpoints at the right moments, is what delivers growth.
We're looking for a Developer Growth Manager to own that experience for our self-service segment. You'll sit within the Developer Experience team and take responsibility for the developer journey: from sign-up through activation, adoption, and expansion. Your primary tools will be data, analytics, and automation, but you'll also engage directly with developers to understand how they move through the funnel. All with the intention of providing developers with an industry-leading developer experience.
This is an AI-forward role. You'll be using AI to accelerate everything you do, whether that’s running experiments at pace, implementing changes, conducting research, capturing insights, you’ll be moving faster than would be possible through manual effort alone.
Day to day you will
- Understand how developers experience Ably. You'll empathise with how developers work, understand their workflows, and use that understanding to identify friction, suggest improvements to onboarding flows, and remove barriers to adoption. A key part of this role is being able to think like a developer and credibly engage with a technical audience.
- Use data to drive decisions. Data and monitoring are your primary tools and you'll use them to identify at-risk accounts, product-qualified leads, and expansion opportunities across the self-service segment.
- Design and run automated engagement programs. You'll help design onboarding sequences, in-app messaging, and email nurture campaigns that guide developers from sign-up to first value and beyond. You'll continuously experiment with these flows using AI to iterate at pace.
- Drive activation, adoption, and retention. You'll track and optimize conversion funnels, run experiments with nurture flows, and build early warning systems that flag churn risk before it becomes revenue loss.
- Improve the self-service experience end to end. You'll identify friction points in the product, docs, and onboarding flows, and work directly with other teams to address them. You'll advocate for changes that make Ably delightful for developers to use and succeed with on their own.
- Feed insights back to the business. You'll share usage data, trends, customer feedback, and insights from customer insights and calls to influence roadmap decisions and go-to-market strategy.
- Support a product-led sales motion. You'll design automated journeys triggered by usage signals, identify expansion opportunities, and hand qualified leads to the sales team when accounts show signs of outgrowing self-service.
What success looks like
- Reduced time to value for developers signing up to Ably.
- Drove revenue growth through the self-service segment.
- Improved conversion rates across the sign-up to activation funnel.
- Identified and surfaced expansion opportunities to the sales team.
- Assisted the wider Developer Experience team to improve the onboarding experience and made the product more delightful for developers.
- Used AI and data to move fast, run experiments, and continuously iterated on the developer journey.
We'd love to talk if you have
- A technical background so that you can understand and credibly engage with developers.
- Experience in a product-led growth, DevRel or technical marketing role; ideally within a self-serve or developer-focused SaaS business.
- A strong analytical mindset, with hands-on experience using product usage data and tools to understand and act on customer behaviour.
- Experience of using AI as part of your workflow and an understanding of how it can accelerate your research, experimentation and analysis. Ultimately how it can assist you to iterate and ship faster.
- A genuine empathy for developers and technical users, and an understanding of what great developer experience looks like.
- A proactive, self-directed approach.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, and the confidence to engage and speak directly with developers.
Bonus points if you have
- Familiarity with product analytics tools.
- A proven ability to build and optimize automated engagement programs across email, in-app, and other digital channels.
- Experience working with APIs or developer tools, or a background that gives you genuine understanding of a technical customer base.
- Experience defining and tracking PLG metrics such as activation rate, time to value, and PQL conversion.

About this role
As the Technical Lead for Developer Experience at Ably you will report directly to our CTO and co-own the DevEx vision and strategy, transforming our dashboard, documentation platform, and control plane into a world-class experience. You are a senior, hands-on engineer who’s passionate about building for developers like yourself; someone who’ll obsess over the developer journey and elevate the user experience of the Ably platform.
You’ll blend deep full-stack expertise with a strong product mindset and lead a team of five engineers where the feedback loop is immediate, because you and your team are the target users of the very ecosystem you are building.
Day to day you will
- Obsess over developer experience. You’ll have broad responsibility for elevating how developers interact with Ably’s platform and services, partnering with the DevEx PM as a unified leadership team to deliver a developer experience that becomes a reference point for the industry.
- Lead technical execution and vision. You’ll lead a team of five engineers building customer-facing web applications and own the technical architecture and design decisions for our dashboard, docs platform, marketing website, and billing UI.
- Drive a product-first engineering culture. You’ll foster an environment where engineers are themselves principal stakeholders of product features, and obsess over customer outcomes. You’ll challenge the "feature factory" mentality and build a team that takes true ownership of the product.
- Thrive in a rapid iteration environment. You’ll operate in a high-velocity workspace where PMs, customers, and engineers co-create features. You’ll lead the team in working full-stack to iterate, improve, and ship improvements quickly.
- Champion AI-assisted development. You’ll be a catalyst for AI adoption across the team. You’ll leverage LLMs and AI tools to accelerate velocity without compromising on engineering integrity.
- Guide engineering outcomes and quality. You’ll set and enforce high standards for code review, testing, and production readiness. You will participate in incident response and coordinate with the Infrastructure team on platform dependencies and deployments.
- Mentor and grow the team. You’ll manage performance, career development, and hiring. You will hold the team accountable for delivery commitments while providing the mentorship needed to turn engineers into product-minded leaders.
We'd love to talk if you have
- A natural empathy for developer customers because you are the target audience. You are genuinely excited about building developer tools and instinctively understand what good looks like. You're fluent in API design, documentation, and the nuances that differentiate a great developer journey.
- Extensive experience leading teams at B2B SaaS or API-first companies. You have a track record of building product-minded engineering cultures where teams take initiative and ownership of product outcomes.
- A strong software engineering background with expertise in React, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript, alongside backend experience in Ruby on Rails or Node.js. You're comfortable writing code and building prototypes using our APIs, and have built and shipped customer-facing web applications at scale.
- An AI-first mindset. You champion the use of LLMs and AI tools as productivity multipliers for the team. You see AI as an enabler for higher velocity and output, not a replacement for engineering judgment.
- Experience at a startup or growth-stage company or adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment with a focus on rapid iteration. To be effective in this role you’ll need excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Bonus points if you have
- Experience delivering solutions used by software developers (developer tooling or APIs) or similar technical personas.
- An understanding of pub/sub and familiarity with distributed systems and event based architectures.

About this role
Thousands of developers around the world use Ably's SDKs and APIs to power realtime features in their applications. The Developer Experience team is responsible for ensuring that Ably is a platform that exemplifies great developer experience, and is a reference point that other companies aspire to.
As our Senior Developer Experience Writer, you’ll be contributing directly to this goal; helping developers to quickly understand Ably, build confidently and ultimately succeed with the platform. At its core, this is an AI-focussed role; you’ll be in charge of setting up the foundations that empower engineers to produce first-class developer documentation with AI at scale. You’ll use AI to automate checks, maintain quality, and allow for rapid iteration in the content itself, as well as in the documentation platform. You’ll still be setting the standards for technical content across the business, and using your expertise to shape the information architecture.
This is a modern take on technical writing; you’ll be using AI to both increase your own output, whilst also increasing the velocity of other contributors. The same core values still apply though - ensuring that users can quickly understand and succeed with Ably.
Day to day you will
- Use AI to produce quality content. You’ll write reusable prompts and skills that docs contributors can use to ensure their content meets Ably’s quality standards.
- Define and uphold content standards. You'll help define what great looks like; from docs structure and style to making sure that PRs are always exceeding standards. You’ll leverage AI to check for technical accuracy, and make sure that content always assists developers in learning and succeeding with Ably in the fastest and easiest ways possible.
- Build engaging educational content templates. You’ll lead by example by producing reference content that others can use as a pattern to write similar content. This will be in the format of templates and skills that team members can leverage.
- Empower engineers to write great content. You'll coach and support engineering contributors to ensure that they’re always producing accurate, well-structured, developer-friendly content.
- Champion effective AI use. You'll promote the use of AI for efficiency, while maintaining a sharp eye for quality ensuring content meets editorial standards, is technically accurate, and is free from AI-generated patterns that undermine trust or clarity.
- Maintain and elevate the docs platform. You'll take responsibility for shaping the documentation platform's components, structure and tooling. This includes making sure content is logically structured, and easily navigable, and that it helps external developers understand Ably in new and exciting ways.
We'd love to talk if you have
- Proven success creating technical content for developers, such as documentation, API references and guides; with a portfolio that others have visibly learned from.
- Experience reviewing and giving feedback on technical writing, with the ability to coach others to improve their craft.
- Experience and a desire to work in an AI-forward environment. Experience in automation, working with agents and producing quality content at scale is a bonus.
- Experience of using AI tools as a core part of your workflow for writing, research and coding, as well as understanding their output and limitations.
- Familiarity with APIs, SDKs, and modern web development tools, with the ability to read, write and reason about code examples in at least one programming language (ideally JavaScript).
- Strong instincts for developer experience, particularly around onboarding, and a genuine desire to produce experiences that delight developers.
- A proactive, self-directed mindset with the ability to take ownership of projects end to end, from ideation through to completion.
- Experience at a startup or growth-stage company, or the adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment with a focus on rapid iteration, with excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Bonus points if you have
- Experience in maintaining and shaping a documentation platform or developer portal.
- Familiarity with information architecture principles and content strategy.
- Familiarity with git-driven workflows for managing content changes.
- Some knowledge or understanding of event-driven architecture.
