As the Manager of Membership Engagement, you will lead efforts to grow membership by bringing The Trustees' value proposition directly to visitors, event attendees, and communities across the Commonwealth.

You will serve as the organization's field-based membership leader—building relationships with property teams, creating a culture of membership engagement across our network of reservations, and developing strategies that convert visitors into members and members into lifelong supporters. Through training, coaching, outreach, and direct engagement, you will help strengthen the connection between the experiences people have at our special places and their commitment to our mission.

The Role:

As the Manager of Membership Engagement, you will develop and execute statewide membership acquisition and engagement strategies that increase visibility, drive membership growth, and strengthen collaboration between the Membership team and property-based staff.

This is a highly collaborative, relationship-driven role that requires strong communication skills, initiative, and a passion for connecting people to mission-driven experiences. You will work closely with property teams, Marketing, Customer Service, Development, and Membership Operations to ensure a consistent and compelling membership experience across the organization.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Membership, you will also supervise the Membership Engagement Associate and provide leadership, coaching, and support to help achieve acquisition goals and deepen member engagement.

Specifically, you’ll be responsible for:

Field Sales & Acquisition

  • Develop and execute a statewide membership acquisition strategy that maximizes visibility and engagement at high-traffic properties, signature events, and community gatherings.
  • Represent The Trustees membership program in the field, engaging visitors through meaningful conversations that connect their experiences to the value and impact of membership.
  • Build and manage a pipeline of prospective members, leveraging field interactions and follow-up opportunities to drive conversion.
  • Monitor and analyze membership acquisition performance, including memberships sold, prospect engagement, and visitor outreach activities.
  • Partner with Membership to ensure timely follow-up and stewardship of prospective members.

Property Team Partnerships & Training

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with property managers and site-based staff across The Trustees' statewide network of reservations.
  • Design and deliver membership engagement and sales training that equips property-facing staff with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to promote membership.
  • Develop and maintain membership resources and toolkits that support consistent messaging and visitor engagement across properties.
  • Conduct regular property visits and training sessions to strengthen membership visibility and support local engagement efforts.
  • Serve as the primary Membership team liaison to property staff, providing guidance on membership programs, promotions, and best practices.

Engagement Strategy & Campaigns

  • Develop and implement seasonal, event-based, and campaign-specific strategies to increase membership acquisition and engagement.
  • Partner with Marketing to align field-based outreach efforts with organizational campaigns, messaging, and brand standards.
  • Identify and cultivate new opportunities, partnerships, and events that support membership growth and deepen audience engagement.
  • Supervise and coach the Membership Engagement Associate, providing leadership, mentorship, and performance support.

Reporting & Collaboration

  • Track, analyze, and report on membership acquisition activities, outcomes, and trends to inform strategy and decision-making.
  • Provide regular insights and feedback from visitors, members, and property teams to identify opportunities for improvement and growth.
  • Collaborate with Membership Operations and Experience and other internal partners to ensure a seamless and accurate membership experience.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in a minimum of five on-property or external engagement events per year, supporting membership sales, visitor outreach, and The Trustees' field presence across Massachusetts.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

This is a full-time, exempt position (40 hours/week) reporting directly to the Senior Director of Membership.

Requirements

What You’ll Need:

Skills and Experience:

  • 5-9 years of experience in membership, fundraising, sales, visitor engagement, community outreach, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success meeting or exceeding sales, fundraising, membership, or acquisition goals.
  • Experience building relationships across teams and influencing without direct authority.
  • Strong presentation, facilitation, and training skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience using Salesforce or a comparable CRM system to manage constituent relationships and track results.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience supervising, coaching, or mentoring others preferred.
  • Reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and the ability to travel regularly throughout Massachusetts.
  • Regular evening and weekend availability to support member events and programming; schedule flexibility is essential and will be coordinated with your manager.
  • Commitment to exceptional customer service and constituent engagement.
  • Enthusiasm for The Trustees' mission and a genuine interest in connecting people to the outdoors, conservation, culture, and community.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience required.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Current authorization to work in the United States – a candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment.
  • A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy.
  • A satisfactory criminal background (CORI) check.
