About Observable Space

At Observable Space, we're redefining how humanity observes and connects with the universe. We're a vertically integrated, high-growth, space technology company building industry-leading precision optics platforms for Earth and in space. Our systems are trusted by NASA, JPL, SpaceX, Boeing, Raytheon, and the US DoD, among others, and power the work of leading research institutions.

We combine precision opto-mechanical hardware, embedded computing, cloud orchestration, and developer-friendly APIs into world class products. From advanced ground stations, on orbit sensor suites, free space optical lasercom, to distributed compute platforms, we deliver the foundational systems enabling continuous, real-time navigation, observation, and communication in space.

Observable Space is backed by top-tier institutional investors including Lux, Upfront Ventures, RTX Ventures, Detroit Venture Partners and Embedded Ventures.

The Role

We’re hiring a Lead Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical and optomechanical design efforts and manage a small team of mechanical engineers. You will drive system architecture, make high‑impact technical decisions, ensure cross‑discipline integration (optics, electrical, software), and take responsibility for on‑time delivery of observatory‑grade hardware from concept through production and field deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design and optimization of mechanical and optomechanical systems (telescope tubes, mounts, enclosures, optical benches/supports).

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of mechanical engineers; assign tasks, review work, and foster professional development.

  • Define system architecture, design standards, and verification strategies; own key interfaces and requirements.

  • Produce and review detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and BOMs; enforce DFM and quality standards.

  • Drive STOP analyses and system‑level verification to ensure structural, thermal, and optical performance across operating environments.

  • Oversee FEA and test plans for stress, thermal, and vibration environments; interpret results and drive design changes.

  • Lead design reviews (PDR, CDR) and present technical rationale to stakeholders.

  • Coordinate with optics, electrical, manufacturing, and test teams to ensure integration and manufacturability.

  • Support fabrication, QC, assembly, system validation, and supplier development.

  • Own schedule, risk management, and technical trade studies for assigned subsystems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or relevant professional experience.

  • 8+ years relevant experience with progressive responsibility in aerospace, optics, or precision mechanical systems.

  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and managing engineers through design to production.

  • Expert-level proficiency with CAD (SolidWorks, NX, or similar) and creating detailed drawings/BOMs.

  • Demonstrated experience with STOP or cross‑domain system verification, and FEA workflows (ANSYS, Nastran, or similar).

  • Strong knowledge of materials, fasteners, coatings, alignment techniques, and DFM/DFT principles.

  • Excellent communicator and presenter; comfortable leading reviews and interfacing with senior leadership.

  • Track record of delivering complex engineered systems from concept to production.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with telescope systems, astronomical instrumentation, or optomechanics.

  • Thermal design experience for outdoor or space environments; athermal design knowledge.

  • Familiarity with optical mounts, flexures, tolerance analysis, and alignment tooling.

  • Systems engineering experience: ICDs, verification planning, requirements flowdown.

  • Basic scripting/automation (Python, MATLAB) for design or test workflows.

  • Experience with ISO/AS9100 quality systems and supplier management.

What We Offer

  • Competitive Compensation – A salary package aligned with industry standards and your experience.

  • Equity Opportunities – Take part in our success with stock options.

  • Flexible Work Environment – Enjoy working from our office or in a hybrid work setup with the flexibility to work remotely part of the week. We require a minimum of 3 days per week in our office to support collaboration and team culture. (LA Office only)

  • Unlimited PTO – Take the time you need with our flexible, trust-based vacation policy, including paid holidays. We encourage everyone to rest, recharge, and take care of themselves.

  • Health & Wellness – Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with 100% of the premium paid by the employer for employees.

  • Cutting-Edge Tools – Get access to the latest hardware and software you need to do your best work.

  • Mission-Driven Culture – Be part of a team working on meaningful challenges with real-world impact.

  • Inclusive Team – We foster a supportive and diverse workplace where all voices are valued.
