About Us

Shelter House was established in 1981 as a grassroots response to the homelessness crisis in Fairfax County. Since our founding, we have continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of our community while partnering with local governments, community organizations, and supporters. Today, Shelter House is a respected nonprofit organization with more than 200 employees dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness and domestic violence.

Last year alone, our team helped nearly 4,000 individuals—including more than 2,000 children—access safe housing, critical resources, and supportive services. Our work is guided by our core values of Inclusivity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Empowerment (iC.A.R.E.).

About the Role

The Case Manager provides comprehensive, trauma-informed case management services to individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Managing a caseload of approximately 18–20 households, this role uses a Housing First approach to help clients secure and maintain permanent housing while building long-term stability and self-sufficiency.

As the primary point of contact for assigned clients, the Case Manager works closely with households to assess needs, develop individualized service plans, coordinate community resources, advocate on their behalf, and help remove barriers to housing, employment, financial stability, and overall well-being.

How You Will Contribute

  • Conduct comprehensive client assessments, including housing history, barriers to housing, physical and behavioral health, employment, education, financial stability, strengths, and support needs.
  • Manage an active caseload of approximately 18–20 households while providing individualized, client-centered case management services.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Housing Sustainability Plans that support long-term housing stability and self-sufficiency.
  • Connect clients with community resources, public benefits, healthcare providers, employment opportunities, educational programs, and other supportive services.
  • Assist clients with budgeting, financial literacy, and money management strategies.
  • Support clients in maintaining lease compliance and resolving issues that may threaten housing stability.
  • Mediate household, roommate, and landlord-tenant conflicts as needed.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with landlords, property managers, community partners, and service providers.
  • Coordinate wraparound services through collaboration with community agencies, faith-based organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in HMIS and client files in accordance with agency policies, funding requirements, and best practices.
  • Prepare required reports and submit documentation in a timely manner.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (Outlook, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.) to support daily operations.
  • Collaborate effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team while maintaining positive working relationships with Shelter House staff and external partners.
  • Demonstrate Shelter House's core values of Inclusivity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Empowerment (iC.A.R.E.) in all interactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Programs and/or Program Director.

Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Development, or related degree or commensurate
  • experience.
  • Three years of experience in service delivery with low and moderate-income families.
  • Ability to prioritize competing priorities and make sound judgment.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to advocate, assist in problem-solving, and achieve results for families
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred:

  • An MSW or master's degree in human services/ related field
  • Experience with providing services to clients experiencing homelessness, Mental Health or substance abuse issues
  • Ability to speak a language other than English at a proficient level (i.e. Spanish, Farsi)
  • Comfortably with and quickly adapts to change.
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Annual TB Test is required 
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods 
  • Ability to lift items weighing 10-20 pounds
