POSITION SUMMARY
We are looking for an experienced, passionate, and resourceful backend software engineer to join our Live Pay team. In our team, you’ll work cross-functionally with various teams and contribute to the design and development of key platform services. This person will need to be strong in JVM programming languages and event-driven architecture, in addition to AWS. The Canada base salary range for this full-time position is $199,000- $244,000, plus equity and benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. This role will be hybrid from our Vancouver, CAN office, with 2 days a week in the office required.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Drive the design and implementation of new features, break down complex problems into their bare essentials, translate this complexity into elegant design, and create high-quality, maintainable code
- Make a meaningful impact on the lives of our community members
- Create and maintain test automation to enable continuous integration and development velocity
- Design and deliver robust microservices integrations via REST/gRPC APIs and via messaging patterns (events/queues)
- Collaborate and mentor other engineers while providing thoughtful guidance using code, design, and architecture reviews
- Work cross-functionally with other teams, including data science, design, product, marketing, and analytics
- Debug production issues across our services infrastructure and multiple levels of our stack
- Work with distributed systems and services, and care passionately about producing high-quality code
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 4+ years of development experience in Software Engineering
- Bachelor's, Master’s, or PhD degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Proficient in at least one JVM programming language, such as Java, Kotlin, or Scala.
- Experience with at least one major framework like Spring, Spring Boot
- Hands-on experience with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle, experience with NoSQL databases is a plus
- Hands-on experience working in cloud environments: AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Hands-on experience with streaming and messaging technologies such as Kafka, AWS SNS/SQS, and AWS Kinesis.
- Experience with continuous integration and delivery tools.
- Experienced in developing and executing functional and integration tests.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with Kubernetes and microservice architecture is a strong plus.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, LLMs)

The Role
Cash App's mission is to make money instantly available and universally accessible - all the products and features we've released in the app are based on those principles. Lending offers Cash App and Afterpay users low-friction access to credit without prohibitive repayment terms, and the Lending Engineering team is focused on building the complex systems and tooling to support access and availability.The Lending Engineering team focuses on building the products and platforms that help deliver this access and credit to our customers at scale. You Will
- Partner closely with credit risk, legal & compliance, product managers and other engineers to take the Lending capability to the next level.
- Lead or contribute to projects from hypothesis to production capability, ensuring ownership of the output quality.
- Build financial primitives by acting as an IC or lead on atomic, composable, API-level building blocks that serve the Block's intelligence layer.
- Take a developer-centric approach to designing and building clean APIs, optimizing strictly for uptime, latency, regulatory compliance, and cost-per-transaction.
- Experiment with emerging approaches and support team capability by sharing learnings and providing feedback.
- Operate and manage existing Cash services.
- Make recommendations to improve the team and wider Engineering practices.

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. Canada locations are categorized into one of two zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. Canada locations are categorized into one of two zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

About the Role
As a Sr. Systems Full-Stack Engineer, you will bridge the gap between design and development by rapidly transforming concepts into production-ready applications using modern full-stack frameworks and AI design tools. You will play a key role in the early stages of innovation, taking ideas from concept to prototype to production with a strong focus on frontend excellence, design system alignment, and solid backend foundations. Leveraging tools like v0.dev, bolt.new, and Lovable, you will accelerate design-to-code workflows while ensuring every component meets enterprise standards for accessibility, performance, and scalability. You will collaborate closely with UX Designers, AI Builders, and Innovation Leads, using platforms like Figma and Supabase to deliver cohesive, high-quality applications. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys experimentation, and has a passion for pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve in modern software development.
Key Responsibilities
- Rapidly turn concepts into interactive prototypes using AI design tools (v0.dev, bolt.new, Lovable, etc.).
- Build secure, scalable full-stack applications from prototype to production, emphasizing robust backend architecture, relational database design, and complex logic structures.
- Develop and translate UI prototypes into production-ready frontends, adapting flexibly across modern JavaScript frameworks (React/Vue) and structured low-code enterprise platforms (OutSystems) based on client needs.
- Align all components with existing design systems, including tokens, color, typography, and brand guidelines.
- Design and implement RESTful APIs and backend services (e.g., Supabase), integrating SQL/NoSQL databases for efficient data management.
- Implement authentication, caching, and performance optimizations across the stack.
- Collaborate with UX Designers, AI Builders, and Innovation Leads throughout the development lifecycle.
- Maintain component libraries and design systems in Figma to streamline design–dev workflows.
- Document technical decisions and implementations in Jira.
Qualification
- 6+ years of full-stack development experience.
- Strong foundational understanding of web architecture, with expertise bridging modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Vue) and enterprise application platforms (e.g., OutSystems, Appian).
- Proven backend experience with a strong emphasis on relational database design (SQL), complex logic structures, and strongly-typed/compiled environments (e.g., C#, Java, TypeScript).
- Hands-on experience with AI design tools (v0.dev, bolt.new, Lovable) and workflow automation (N8N).
- Strong background in backend development, including API design (REST/GraphQL) and database management (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB).
- Skilled in authentication (OAuth, JWT), caching, and performance optimization.
- Deep understanding of design systems, tokens, and component-driven development.
- Expert Figma user, proficient with design system management and CSS frameworks (e.g., TailwindCSS).
- Experienced with TypeScript, modern JavaScript (ES6+), and cloud deployment (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Proven track record of delivering production-grade applications and maintaining high attention to detail.
- Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and adaptability in fast-paced environments.
- Portfolio demonstrating full-stack builds, design system work, and AI design tool use.
- Previous working experience with OutSystems is a plus
- Experience in the Insurance sector is a bonus
