Senior Software Developer

You are the engineer who can take a hard problem from data layer to UI to model gateway and back without dropping the thread. Full-stack is not a compromise here — it's the job. LLM integration is part of the everyday work, not a side project. You'll write NestJS services that publish events through a well-defined SDK, consume those events into projections, expose them through APIs, build the console UI that makes them useful, and integrate LLMs as governed components inside workflows — with prompt versioning, evals, observability, and cost discipline. The codebase is strict TypeScript, opinionated, and well-documented. Every exported symbol has a JSDoc block. Every architectural decision has an ADR. Every PR ships with docs. You'll match that bar from day one. You will sit in our headquarters in Dallas, TX on a hybrid schedule. The team is in office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. 

What experience should you have:

• 7+ years of production TypeScript and Node. You write strict TypeScript by reflex; you don't reach for any.
• Production experience with NestJS or a comparable Node framework at the level where you understand the request lifecycle, dependency injection, and the trade-offs.
• Production experience with Next.js (App Router preferred) and modern React: server components, streaming, client/server boundary discipline.
• LLM-powered features shipped to production. You've dealt with prompt drift, eval design, hallucination handling, and the cost of getting any of those wrong.
• Postgres at a working level: migrations, index design, query plan analysis, trade-off reasoning.
• Event-driven architecture experience: pub/sub, idempotent consumers, eventual consistency, ordering, retries, dead-letter behavior.
• Strong testing instincts: unit, integration, end-to-end. You don't ship without tests and you care about the difference between tests that pass and tests that matter.

Nice to have

• Drizzle ORM, Temporal, or Redpanda/Kafka in production.
• OpenTelemetry beyond surface-level — sampling strategy, semantic conventions, custom instrumentation.
• Design system contribution — component libraries, accessibility patterns, design token discipline.
• Agent frameworks (LangGraph, custom orchestration), eval tooling (Braintrust, LangSmith), or prompt versioning systems.
• Open-source contributions to the TS/Node/Next ecosystem.

What you’ll be doing in this role:

• Backend services in NestJS: API design, request validation with Zod, event publishing through the canonical SDK, projection consumers, RLS-aware database access. You write the service, the tests, and the docs.
• The Next.js console: App Router, server and client components, the in-house design system, real-time UI patterns, the widget framework. You make complex platform state feel direct and obvious to operators.
• LLM integration: agent orchestration inside the workflow runtime, prompt engineering with version control, evaluation harnesses, model gateway usage, structured output validation, retry and fallback logic. You treat model calls as production code, not prompts in a notebook.
• Observability: OpenTelemetry traces, structured logs, meaningful metrics on every meaningful surface. If a customer reports a problem, your code should make finding it trivial.
• Engineering culture: you set the bar for engineers who join after you. The next hires learn from your PRs.

Solution Architect

You are the architectural conscience of the platform and the technical translator at the front of every client engagement. Half your week is inside the product — reviewing ADRs, holding integration patterns coherent, and partnering with the data architect and senior dev to keep the architecture honest. The other half is in front of clients — taking real operational complexity and turning it into platform configurations the system can actually execute. You are not a slide architect. You write decisions down, defend them with reasons, and change them when the reasons change. This role only works if you genuinely enjoy both sides. The leverage is in the loop between them — what we learn in deployments shapes the platform, and what the platform enforces shapes how we deploy. You will sit in our headquarters in Dallas, TX on a hybrid schedule. The team is in office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. 

What experience should you have:

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 4 explicitly accountable for system architecture — Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, Solution Architect, or equivalent.
• Production experience with multi-tenant SaaS at meaningful scale. You have personally owned tenant isolation decisions and understand the difference between "we have a tenant_id column" and a defensible isolation model.
• Deep experience with event-driven or event-sourced systems in production. You have opinions about idempotency, schema evolution, and the cost of getting either wrong.
• Working fluency in the modern TypeScript/Node ecosystem (NestJS, Next.js, Drizzle, Zod, Postgres, Kafka/Redpanda, Temporal or comparable). You can read the codebase, make changes when it matters, and produce durable architecture artifacts — ADRs, RFCs, decision documents — that someone six months from now can act on.
• Direct experience leading rooms of senior client or executive stakeholders — consulting, enterprise customer engineering, field architecture, or technical pre-sales. You can translate "the engagement is slipping" into a technical control loop and back again.

Nice to have: 

• Background in professional services, agency operations, or management consulting — you understand engagement economics from the inside.
• Observability experience (OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing) at a depth that lets you design for it, not just consume it.
• Architecture decisions on AI-native or LLM-integrated systems — model gateways, agent orchestration, prompt versioning, or evaluation pipelines.
• Experience in compliance-conscious environments (SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR) where audit trails and data residency are first-class concerns.
• Public writing, conference talks, or open-source contributions that show how you think.

What you’ll be doing in this role:

• Own the architectural coherence of the platform, ADR backlog, architecture reviews, system shape diagrams, the canonical event envelope, the tenant isolation model. You hold the line on invariants and write down why.
• Define integration patterns for every external system, identity providers, CRMs, project tools, communication systems, AI providers. You decide how we connect, not just whether.
• Build and own client deployment patterns, repeatable playbooks from "first connector" to "first signal" to "first governed action." You author them, run the first few personally, and abstract them into reusable configurations as you go.
• Lead pre-deployment architecture sessions with client technical teams, translating their identity infrastructure, data model, permissions, and compliance posture into a deployment plan the build team can execute.
• Carry the technical narrative externally. You can sit across from a client CTO, walk them through the architecture, defend it under pressure, and adjust where the pressure is legitimate.
• Mentor the founding engineering team on architectural reasoning, not by lecturing, but by showing your work in ADRs, reviews, and the way you make trade-offs visible.

About the Role

Realtor.com is looking for a Director of Engineering, Consumer Enablement to lead the platform and enablement organization that powers all consumer-facing web and mobile experiences. This is a high-impact engineering leadership role responsible for three core pillars: Web & Mobile Platforms, Consumer Services, and Quality Enablement — the foundational systems and tooling that every consumer product team at Realtor.com builds on.

You will lead a multi-team org of ~40 engineers (FTE + contractors), managing senior engineering managers and staff engineers across web platform, mobile platform, component systems, backend services, and quality engineering. You'll report to the VP of Consumer Engineering.

This role is equal parts technical depth and organizational influence. You're not shipping features — you're building the paved path that lets dozens of engineers ship faster, safer, and with higher quality.

What You'll Do

Platform Strategy & Execution

• Own the technical roadmap for web and mobile platform infrastructure, including the MFE architecture (web-islands), CI/CD pipelines, React Router 7 migration (Project Oracle), and headless CMS platform
• Drive the next evolution of Realtor.com's design system (rdc-ui V4: Panda CSS migration) and component ecosystem used across 41 codebases
• Lead the decomposition of legacy monolithic services (Hestia) and the transition to domain-owned GraphQL subgraphs via Pantheon federation

Engineering Enablement

• Define and deliver the "paved path" — standardized patterns, tooling, and guardrails that reduce cognitive load for 100+ consumer engineers
• Own DORA metrics for the org
• Partner with stream-aligned teams (Buyers & Sellers, Search, Personalization, New Homes, Rentals, Mobile squads) as an internal platform provider

Quality at Scale

• Evolve the quality enablement model — shifting quality left through automation, AI tooling, and developer-owned testing
• Oversee the testing pyramid: reducing E2E test reliance, scaling Playwright frameworks, and rolling out the AI Quality Toolkit

Cloud Cost & FinOps

• Own the engineering cost envelope for Consumer Enablement — AWS spend, CircleCI credits, and third-party tooling budgets
• Partner with FinOps and infrastructure teams to instrument cost attribution, identify rightsizing opportunities, and enforce cost-aware development practices across the paved path
• Establish unit cost baselines for key platform operations (e.g., cost-per-deploy, cost-per-test-run) and drive measurable efficiency improvements quarter over quarter

People & Organization

• Lead and develop 3 senior engineering managers and multiple staff engineers across 7 sub-teams
• Create clear career frameworks and growth paths that retain top engineers and set expectations at every level
• Build inclusive team cultures with high psychological safety — where engineers do their best work, managers are effective coaches, and feedback flows in all directions
• Drive hiring rigor: define role profiles, calibrate leveling, and make high-quality talent decisions in partnership with recruiting
• Manage headcount planning, contractor-to-FTE ratios, and capacity allocation across competing priorities in a lean org

AI Strategy & Developer Enablement

• Partner with engineering managers to embed AI practices into daily workflows — code review, documentation, incident response, sprint planning
• Represent the Consumer Engineering perspective in AI investment decisions: what to build internally, what to buy, and what to deprecate

What We're Looking For

Required

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5 years leading engineering teams, including managing managers
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
• Demonstrated experience owning platform, infrastructure, or developer tooling organizations — not just product delivery teams
• Deep understanding of modern frontend architecture: micro-frontends, component systems, React, TypeScript, CI/CD pipelines
• Experience with backend GraphQL/API services and federated architecture patterns
• Strong track record of improving engineering velocity and developer experience at scale (DORA metrics, lead time, deployment frequency)
• Excellent cross-functional communication and stakeholder management — able to influence without authority, represent platform value to product and business leaders, and navigate competing priorities across multiple stream-aligned teams

Preferred

• Experience with AI developer tooling strategy: evaluating, deploying, and driving adoption of AI-assisted development tools across an engineering organization
• Hands-on background with FinOps practices: cloud cost attribution, unit economics for platform operations, CI/CD spend optimization, and engineering budget ownership
• Experience with mobile platform engineering (iOS/Android release processes, CircleCI, React Native or native)
• Familiarity with Apollo Federation, GraphQL schema governance, and Pantheon-style API gateway patterns
• Background in quality engineering transformation — shifting from manual QA models to developer-owned quality
• Experience with headless CMS platforms and content-driven architecture
• Familiarity with AWS infrastructure (EKS, Lambda, DynamoDB, CloudFront, ArgoCD)
