Data Production Engineer

Hudson River Trading (HRT) is looking for a Data Production Engineer to join our Data team. Data is at the core of everything we do at HRT; we excel at deriving deep insights from all types of data, allowing us to achieve consistent success in a dynamic market.
This role is an opportunity to work directly with live trading teams to support one of the largest automated trading systems in the world. You will write automation, explore data, work closely with our research and trading teams, and interact with a variety of external partners such as data providers, brokers, and exchanges. In addition to being a critical part of the trading process, you will have the opportunity to acquire, analyze, and prepare data for quantitative research.
Responsibilities
- Data Engineering: Write tools to classify, onboard, and reconcile data. Onboard datasets, explore data, and automate tasks using a modern Python data stack
- Data Analysis: Parse, analyze, and understand data sets. Perform data reconciliations, validations, and quality checks. Identify and develop new processes within the data request process to enrich data. Assist our researchers in cleaning and featurizing data
- Data Debugging: Find anomalies in derived datasets and trace the issues back to their source. This can include using a mix of deductive reasoning, technical analysis, and communicating with multiple stakeholders in a data pipeline
- Production Support: Provide proactive oversight of our data pipeline, handle inquiries from internal customers, and resolve issues under efficient turnaround times
Profile

Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in a data engineering/science role OR a degree in data science or a similar discipline
- Experience in Python strongly preferred
- Experience managing ETL pipelines is a plus
- Experience with financial datasets (e.g. Refinitiv, S&P, Bloomberg) is a big plus
- Comfortable with the Linux command line
- Experienced in at least one SQL dialect (PostgreSQL, MSSQL, MYSQL) and able to use others as needed
- Able to provide technical support in a production trading environment

What you'll do as a Systems Engineer at Akuna:
We are looking for a Systems Engineer to be responsible for Akuna’s Linux server platform health. This person will participate in the design, deployment, and maintenance of our high-performance platform to support our trading environment. They will also automate daily software and hardware tasks while writing and maintaining scripts and tools. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, proactive, and able to take ownership of projects and problems with minimal supervision. In this role, you will:
- Investigate new products and techniques to improve efficiency and performance in the environment
- Responsible for architecture and maintenance of a tier-based storage solution
- Management of Akuna’s server infrastructure at third party and local data centres
- Additional day-to-day responsibilities include system analysis, monitoring, and performance tuning, as well as additional support as required
Qualities that make great candidates:
- Bachelors, Masters or PhD with degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a related subject
- Good English communication skills
- 4-6 years of systems engineering experience
- Advanced experience with a variety of Linux distributions (RedHat, Ubuntu ,etc.)
- Experience in managing and running services within K8s clusters
- Experience in managing a large scale AWS Cloud platform environment
- Experience in automation of daily software and hardware related tasks, Python or Bash scripting experience preferred
- Experience with build and configuration management tools (Ansible/Rundeck, Puppet, Foreman)
- Experience with system monitoring and alerting tools (Icinga/Nagios, Prometheus, Alertmanager)
- Experience in virtualization and orchestration platforms like VMware, Kubernetes and Terraform
- Experience in supporting a variety of storage platforms/protocols

- Linux kernel and low latency performance tuning

THE ROLE
Our trading platform runs on high performance servers distributed across datacenters and offices throughout the world. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyze, diagnose, and resolve Linux based server issues.
- Create, test, deploy, and maintain packages, batch files, and scripts for the OS environment.

- Manage move, add, and change requests and configuration as needed.
- Proactively engage with internal technology groups and vendors as necessary to deliver optimum solutions.

- 3-5 years background in Linux/Unix administration.
- Kernel tuning experience.

This is a greenfield development engagement: the work is scoped to designing and building new software, not maintaining or extending existing production services. You will work in a small, high-autonomy team with a clear remit and a defined delivery horizon, reporting to the Head of Product and Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Engineering
- Design and build production-grade services using Java and Spring Boot, targeting high throughput, low latency, and high availability (99.99%+).
- Implement and evolve RESTful/gRPC/MCP and event-driven APIs supporting payment initiation, callback handling, reconciliation, and settlement flows.
- Build for fault tolerance and resilience: circuit breakers, retry logic, idempotency, and graceful degradation under load. Maximum observability and telemetry at the core of the build to ensure easy support.
- Optimise service performance through profiling, load testing, and careful data access layer design (SQL and NoSQL).
- Collaborating with colleagues and off-shore development teams providing code-reviews and guidance as necessary to team members and development studios.
Payment Systems
- Build the core components of Payout, Card Processing and FX systems from scratch, including a payout processing engine, AI agent treasury orchestration layer, and cash forecasting service. This work is entirely new development and there is no existing codebase to maintain or inherit.
- Contribute to PCI DSS compliant system design and implementation, including sensitive data handling, audit logging, and access control.
Frontend Contribution
- Contribute React-based frontend components for internal tooling, operational dashboards, and merchant-facing interfaces where required.
- Work with Product and Design to deliver functional, well-tested UI features that meet Boku's quality bar.
FX & Treasury Integration (Desirable)
- Support integration with FX data sources including Bloomberg feeds, for use in real-time rate pricing, settlement FX, and treasury risk tooling.
- Contribute to cash position and FX exposure monitoring services, working alongside Finance and Treasury stakeholders.
Reliability & Operations
- Instrument projects with observability from day one: structured logging, distributed tracing, metrics, and alerting built as part of the product, not retrofitted. On-call and incident management for existing Boku production services are outside the scope of this contract.
- Instrument services with structured logging, distributed tracing, and metrics; contribute to SLO/SLA definitions and alerting.
- Set up CI/CD pipelines, container build configuration (Docker/EKS), and code quality gating (SonarCloud, SAST) as new infrastructure built to Boku’s engineering standards and handed over as part of the finished product.
Key Skills, Experience and Competencies
Required
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience, with deep expertise in Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem (Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security).

- Experience designing or contributing to agentic workflows: multi-step autonomous processes where models plan, call tools, and act on results — including handling retries, failure modes, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
- Familiarity with MCP (Model Context Protocol) or similar tool-use frameworks for connecting AI models to internal APIs, databases, and external services.
- Comfortable using AI-assisted development tooling (e.g. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) as part of day-to-day engineering workflow, and able to reason critically about where AI assistance adds value versus where it requires human judgement.

Role Overview
Responsibilities
- Educate prospects and customers on what is possible with TiDB and share best practices for integrating into their applications
- Understand customer requirements and communicate the business value of solving technology problems using TiDB
- Guide the design and deployment of hybrid transactional and analytical databases that impact multiple functional areas of a customer’s organization
- Work on RFPs / customer’s technical requirements with the Sales team
- Prepare demos and proofs-of-concept to demonstrate various use cases for TiDB
- Create technical content to show customers how to integrate TiDB or implement best practices for new technologies
- During a customer's implementation, assist backend developers, database administrators, product managers, and project owners with any and all technical questions that arise
- Assist developers with debugging their database integrations, and suggesting code optimization in a variety of programming languages
- Document the architectural solutions that customers have designed and deployed
- Distill and communicate customer needs and product feedback to Product Management, Engineering, Marketing, and Sales
- Public speaking by participating in physical or online events
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Presales or similar role, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in solution design and implementation
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong technical proficiency in a wide range of technologies, including but not limited to cloud computing, microservices architecture, API design, database systems, and security principles.
- A strong Database experience is a must. MySQL experience is most preferred.
- A strong understanding of the software development lifecycle;
- Working understanding of code and script in Python, Shell, or Golang is a plus.
- Docker/Kubernetes knowledge is a strong plus.
- Experience in one or more public cloud environments, e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform;
- Typically 15-25% travel, depending on role
