Senior Process Engineer

As a Senior Process engineer at Redwood you will have the opportunity to make the world a better place by contributing to a wide variety of processes and projects across the business and locations. The chemical engineering team has three main functions that leverage all the fields of chemical and metallurgical processing: Provide sound technical support and continuously improve our commercial operations; Develop new processes and plants to address the immediate challenges of the recycling industry; Research and development to address the future challenges of recycling industry. This Senior Chemical Engineer will fall underneath Redwood's Plant Design and Commissioning group supporting our hydrometallurgy refining plants and related operations.

Responsibilities will include:

• Working closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure that our processes are safe, efficient, sustainable, and continuously improving
• Leading and participating in cross-functional teams to develop and implement new process plant and equipment
• Testwork and pilot plant design and operation
• Flowsheet conceptualization and development
• Flowsheet trade-off evaluations and studies
• Process plant design
• Process plant implementation and installation assistance
• Process plant commissioning and ramp-up

Desired Qualifications

• Bachelors or Masters in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related discipline
• 5 to 7 years experience in Chemical Plant Operations and/or Design and Commissioning
• Large scale industrial processing experience
• Operational support and track record of solving difficult chemical and metallurgical process problems and making plant improvements
• Testwork and pilot plant design and operating experience
• Process modelling (HSCSIM, SysCAD, METSIM) and equipment sizing linking testwork and pilot plant operation to real project implementation
• Trade-off studies and financial evaluation
• Process plant design and commissioning
• Track record of solving difficult chemical and metallurgical processing problems
• Metallurgical processing context of this experience is desired (mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy and electrometallurgy) but it isn’t essentia
• Self Motivated with a hands on approach who takes the initiative

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to safely perform job duties in both office and production environments
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed
• Must maintain regular and punctual attendance in alignment with company and regulatory standards

Working Conditions:

• Split work environment between office and the production facility
• Work may involve extended periods of working in the production facility
• Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time

This role will be responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and maintenance of licensing strategies and documents to ensure compliance with all applicable nuclear regulatory requirements.

The Sr. Licensing Engineer will play a crucial role in navigating the complex regulatory landscape of the nuclear energy industry. Reporting to the Director of Licensing, this position will involve interpreting regulations, preparing licensing submittals, interacting with regulatory agencies, and ensuring the company's activities are conducted in accordance with all applicable licenses, permits, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Licensing Document Development & Maintenance:
  • Prepare, review, and revise licensing documents, including license applications, amendments, technical specifications, safety analysis reports, environmental reports, and other regulatory submittals.
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and technical adequacy of all licensing documents.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of current licensing bases and regulatory commitments.
• Regulatory Interpretation & Analysis:
  • Interpret and analyze federal, state, and local regulations related to nuclear energy.
  • Assess the impact of new and revised regulations on the company's operations and licensing basis.
  • Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on regulatory requirements and licensing strategies.
• Regulatory Agency Interaction:
  • Prepare responses to regulatory inquiries and requests for additional information.
  • Participate in meetings and teleconferences with regulatory agencies (e.g., NRC).
  • Support regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Maintain positive and effective working relationships with regulatory personnel.
• Compliance Assurance:
  • Assist in the development and implementation of programs and procedures to ensure ongoing regulatory compliance.
  • Support internal audits and assessments to verify adherence to licensing commitments.
  • Track and manage regulatory commitments and action items.
• Technical Support:
  • Provide technical support to engineering, operations, and other departments on licensing-related matters.
  • Participate in the review of design changes and operational procedures to ensure consistency with the licensing basis.
  • Contribute to the development of technical justifications for licensing positions.
• Training & Awareness:
  • Assist in the development and delivery of training materials related to licensing requirements.
  • Promote a culture of regulatory awareness and compliance within the organization.

Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Nuclear, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, etc.) or a related scientific discipline.
• 8+ years of experience in engineering or a related technical field within the nuclear energy industry.
• Familiarity with nuclear regulations, licensing processes, and regulatory guidance documents (e.g., NRC regulations, NUREGs).
• Experience in preparing or reviewing licensing documents is highly desirable.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical information clearly and concisely.
• Detail-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and completeness.
• Ability to interpret and apply regulations and technical standards.
• Ability to working independently and as part of a team.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Valued but not required:
  • Advanced degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Specific experience interacting with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
  • Familiarity with probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) and its application to licensing.
  • Knowledge of reactor systems, safety analysis, or environmental regulations related to nuclear energy.

The estimated starting salary range for this role is $150,000 - $173,000 annually less applicable withholdings and deductions, paid on a bi-weekly basis. This role will be responsible for supporting the verification and closure of Inspections, Tests, Analyses, and Acceptance Criteria (ITAAC) to ensure that nuclear facility construction and modifications comply with all applicable regulatory requirements and design specifications.

The ITAAC Engineer will play a key role in ensuring the successful transition of new or modified nuclear facilities from construction to operation. This position will involve interpreting ITAAC requirements, collecting and organizing evidence, preparing ITAAC closure documentation, and interacting with regulatory agencies to demonstrate compliance with the Combined Operating License (COL).

Responsibilities

• ITAAC Verification & Documentation:
  • Interpret and understand specific ITAAC requirements as defined in the Combined Operating License (COL) and associated design documents.
  • Gather, review, and organize objective evidence (e.g., test reports, inspection records, analysis reports, design documents, construction specifications) to demonstrate completion of ITAAC.
  • Prepare and support the development of ITAAC Closure Notifications (ICNs) and other related documentation for submission to the NRC.
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and technical adequacy of all ITAAC verification packages.
• Regulatory Interpretation & Application:
  • Interpret and apply federal regulations, regulatory guides, and industry standards related to ITAAC and nuclear facility commissioning.
  • Assess the impact of design changes, construction deviations, or test results on the fulfillment of ITAAC.

Experience

• 5+ years of experience in engineering, quality assurance, construction oversight, or a related technical field within the nuclear energy industry.
• Demonstrated experience and understanding of the ITAAC process as defined in NRC regulations (e.g., 10 CFR Part 52) and associated guidance documents.
• Familiarity with nuclear power plant design, construction, testing, and commissioning processes.
• Experience with integrated project schedules and tracking tools for large construction projects.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to connect design intent to physical realization.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to compile complex technical information into clear, concise regulatory submittals.
• Detail-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and completeness, especially when reviewing objective evidence.
• Ability to interpret and apply regulations, design specifications, and technical standards.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with document management systems.
